I'm not peticularly a computer guy. In other words, I don't know an AGP slot from a PCI slot to a (insert computery thingie here)!
I have general knowlege about graphics cards, RAM, and processors, but I have not the slightest clue on the Motherboard!
Tell me, NS General!

AGP and PCI slots are expansion slots. AGP can only hold video cards but video cards are also made to fit PCI slots. Other things that can go into PCI slots are upgraded modems or the likes. If you know what type of processor, video card and how much ram you want, you can just match those things with a motherboard that fits all of them.

Most computers don't come with AGP slots anymore, right?
About a year ago, I tried to update the family computer with a 128MB AGP graphics card, only to discover that there were no AGP slots!
I ended up settling for a 64MB PCI card, instead. :(

The slot on the left is an AGP port, designed for more modern graphics cards. The 3 identical slots are pci slots, designed for other card types, such as modems and older (or low end) graphics cards.

No... agp is becoming more and more popular, and is a must for most modern graphics cards. Your motherboard is probably really old :D

Now, AGP is similar to PCI, but has a much larger bus speed, so it allows for more data to flow. In the normal run of the mill programs, you would probably not notice much of a change, but with intense gaming, the differences will become much more apparent. Some games don't even support pci cards. I have heard the PCIX will threaten AGP's new position as the graphics card standard, but that waits to be seen.

Unless he has PCI Express, which is replacing AGP. AGP is old.

PCI-X WAS the standard for about a month
But now it is confusing people
PCI-E equals pci express standard version (both the 16x slot and the 1x slot)
PCI-X equals pci-x which was implemented for a short amount of time (normaly seen in servers)

PCI is your standard addtion slot
PCI-E (16x) is the new Graphics card standard addition slot
There is also a PCI-E(1x) that CAN be used as an standard addition slot (it is just a wee slot) ... really really short
