A new grammar rule devised in the Netherlands and Belgium stipulates the word "Christ" shall be spelled with a lowercase "c."

The rule was part of a Dutch orthography reform published in October, reported Canada Free Press.

The paper cites a German newssite, Kath.net, in reporting that the new guidelines also indicate the Dutch word for "Jews" (Joden) is to be spelled with a capital "J" when referring to nationality and with a lower-case "j" when referring to the religion.

The changes – made by the main linguistic authority for the Dutch language, Nederlandse Taalunie – become mandatory next August.

While the proper name of Jesus Christ – "Jezus Christus" in Dutch – will still be capitalized, other references to Christ, such as a statue of him, will be spelled with a lowercase "c," as will references to other figures who claim to be Christ.

Many Europeans have long discarded belief in God and in fact believe more deeply in ghosts than in a deity.

A new poll finds two-thirds of Britons said they believe in the existence of ghosts and spirits, but only 55 percent said they believe in the existence of God.

Meanwhile, 26 percent believe in UFOs, 19 percent in reincarnation and 4 percent in the Loch Ness Monster, Ananova reported.

Well, for one thing (assuming that capitalization works in roughly the same way for dutch people, or whoever it is who lives in canada), it seems like a state-sanctioned insult to our possible savior :/

And maybe God will only make the standards-writers pay for it, but still, their souls're worth worrying about, too

Yeah, and apparently the Dutch speaking parts of Belgium, and the Netherlands count as "Europeans lowercasing christ."

When put that way, I have no choice but not to emulate! No longer will I be a slave to grammatical reactionism and use a big letter in "christ." As a European it is my duty to lowercase it, and thereby to reject the zombie lord himself!

about the Jew question...
Jew does refer ONLY to a religion.
Does the dutchs mix up Israel, zionist and Jews just for the fun to add trouble?
Or will they say that Arab and Muslim mean the same thing?

Even I would have been a Dutch, my problem is I do not like the Law as some adore a god.

I second that. There's a reason why there are rules for grammar and spelling. At least the Dutch and the French (since you mention them) know how to write in their own language. A great many native English speakers struggle with written English.

We've already done that in France.

We've upheld the principle of secularity for over a hundred years now. The idea is that everyone should be perfectly free to belong to any religion they want, but that the public/government and private/religious spheres shouldn't mix.

1. It's hardly time for countries to start denigrating one religious figure by twisting grammatical rules around.

2. In what sense do you want religion removed from schools? In what sense is it in schools now?

3. Do you mean that religion needs to be wiped out, period?

The way I see it, "God" needs to be capitalized not only to differentiate the proper noun from the common noun, but the same way "Captain" needs to be.

1. When god told Abraham to go screw himself, Abraham was all like, "y u up in my grill dawg? U strait up crazy tryin ta fuck wit a nigga when u aint not even got no capital lettaz"

And the bible explicitly forbids graven images, that includes statues. So they shouldn't exist, let alone be referred to as if they were him.

Nobody's even discussing to stop capitalising Jesus or Jahwe. Those are names. A god can be Vishnu, Allah or Vitzli-Putzli, it is a job description and therefore shouldn't be capitalised.

1) Dude, seriously, get a life. People are dying before their time all over the world to various reasons, and you get worked up about a language that is spoken by less than 40 million people wolrdwide changing it's spelling rules ...

2)Europeans don't lowercase 'christ', the dutch speaking do (Nederland and Vlaanderen). Why does everyone always talk about Europe as if it is 1 nation?

3)Just a detail: Jews isn't written with a capital when reffering to nationality, because it isn't a nationality. It's written with a capital when referring to a people.

A statue of him = a christ. Sacrilegious? It is not Christ Himself!
other figueres = "Mr. Whatever, who is often seen as the jesus of New York homosexuals"; "Lenin, the jesus of the USSR". See my point? It's actually a favour to you guys.
Plus: it might be a peculiarity of the Dutch language. Analogy: German, where they spell(ed?) common nouns with capitals. This may even be simpler than that: as you can see, the above examples are adjectives.

(In Romanian - my mother tongue: "un Iisus din lemn" or "un iisus din lemn" - a wooden Jesus - might work just as well and carry no inflamatory nuance.)
