A few weeks ago Tracie read on the company's Web site that it was donating $50,000 and proceeds from its I CAN bracelet to Girls Inc., which sound-ed like the kind of nice thing American Girl would do. But when she clicked on www.girlsinc.org, Tracie was crushed to find an endorsement of Roe v. Wade and language supportive of homosexuals. It struck her that politics had invaded playtime. "I feel like there's nowhere safe," says Tracie, who has vowed not to buy anything from American Girl as long as it's affiliated with Girls Inc.

So she is mad that "politics is invading playtime" because American Doll has donated money to Girls Inc. so she decided to boycott the company because of their political stance. Bitch.

I can't even find an endorsement on Girls Inc's website. This hypocritical bitch must have been digging like a pig for truffles.

Still nothing about Roe v Wade.

The group is also planning a demonstration outside the Chicago store on the day after Thanksgiving.
Obviously outside because there will be no room inside.

We need to stop tolerating this kind of bullshit. Back in the nineties conservatives knew outside the Churches they needed to keep the bullshit sealed tight.

Some liberal women did the same thing with "Curves" health program centers for Women, because the CEO gave to Pro-Life charities..

I guess.. eh, everyone, needs to grow up.. or something..

Well, it's in someones freedom to buy from a certain company or not. It's also totally in the company's freedom to endorse certain organisations or not.

Their kids probably won't care whose dolls they're playing with.

Unfortunately, kids can be quite cruel if another kid doesn't play with a certain kind of dolls or doesn't wear the "correct" shoes and stuff like that :(

Seriously though, I'm all for people saying whatever they want. But we as liberals need to stop bitching about it in private.

We need to start taking a more public and united front against the conservative agenda.

Oh, for God's sake! Why the hell can't these parents just get the frack OVER themselves! This is precisely why political debate in the US has gotten so damned vitriolic: making what some refer to as "moral issues" a topic of politics. [ disgusted look ]

Nothing, one customer more or less probably won't mean a thing for the company. However if she manages to get into the news or tells all her friends that a certain company is bad because of its policies than that company just might have a problem :D

So what then? Freedom of speech is to be a privilege extended only to those whose opinions are acceptable instead of a right possessed by everyone regardless of whether their opinions are right or wrong? All that “Tracie” is doing is boycotting a company and planning to peacefully protest in front of a store. Both actions are well within her rights (or at least they ought to be), and the fact that her motivation may be ignorant is irrelevant.

Liberal: *sound of crickets*
Conservative: OMFG! There are gay people EVERYWHERE!
Liberal: *wanders to computer and bitches to other liberals under alias*

No, Tracie is also being a hypocritical bitch, but that is besides the point. I am not saying they shouldn't be allwoed to do this. I am saying we should publicly show them as the laughing stocks they are. She is mad because politics was being brought into everything, then she boycotts the company for their politics.

I don't really see this as a sign of fundamentalists needing to grow up; they have every right to express their opinion and I'm more than glad that they've chosen to do it in a peaceful manner rather than committing vandalism or terrorism.

If anything, the people who need to grow up are the lefties and the fundies that use violence to advance their radical agenda.

"Tracie" has the right to do what she is doing.

That does not make what she is doing right.

LOL! Funny, I don't remember it quite that way:

Liberal: We need to extend rights to gays and make abortion universally available and make sure the government gives all the poor what they need and ... and ... and.
Conservative: *sound of crickets*
Liberal: OMFG! There are politically incorrect people everywhere!
Conservative: *wanders off to complain to other coservatives that the frakking liberals are stealing the Republic from the conservative majority*

Guess it's all in where you are when the pendulum swings, eh? :D

Good point.

"Tracie" complained that politics were invading playtime. She claimed it was wrong to mix politics and children. Now she is doing what she says is wrong. That makes her a hypocrite.

I dunno.. I haven't seen Tracie's webpage, or Tracie's political ad spots on t.v... seems like Tracie is some random woman approached by a journalist.. it's not like she was picketing in front of the store or something.. the article's pretty sparse on details, but it doesn't seem like she's showboating.. sounds more like journalism.

I wish certain people would make the effort to see that NOT ALL conservatives are on the back of the Christian fundamentalist bandwagon.

I also wish that certain 'conservatives' would stop aligning themselves with the Christian fundamentalist bandwagon (points finger at the President Bush-'Christian Coalition' love in) as not all conservative tendancies align themselves with religious whackjobs.

To think I donated money to the Bush campaign in 2000, what a waste of my money!

Given that President Bush has been the biggest dissapointment to certain conservatives such as myself, I only hope that the American voter will be wise enough to consider Pat Buchanan in 2008, should he stand.

We need to extend rights to gays and make abortion universally available

And I fail to see how giving gays legal rights or the law of the USA allowing women to have abortions has ANYTHING to do with wasting tax money on the so-called 'welfare state' or 'social security'.

As long as the abortion is paid for by the client in question, how does that cause a financial burden to anyone?

Your a funny conservative, as this is an example of market freedom, is it not???

Besides, think about banning abortion, how many children would end up on state handouts?

Think about it, before joining the chorus of the loonies in the Christian Coalition.

That's the "Action League of Chicago," according to the article. I've never heard of them, but again, they're free to picket if they want. No clue whether "Tracie" is a member, or whether they have very many members at all, or who any of them are, etc. Details are helpful sometimes.

i see it as a problem with journalists who give a nutcase too much attention. her boycott is pathetic and doesnt deserve national coverage.

Wow, I'm surprised by the response. It's up to the individual to decide what to buy and what not to buy. It's also up to a company to decide what to donate money to (though I would prefer they just lower the cost of their goods instead of charging me for political donations). But that's the thing, by buying from certain companies we collectively put lots of money in the hands of different political groups. Why not boycott companies that put money into the hands of groups that you oppose?

If you are donating a lot of money to a pro-choice group, does it really make sense to buy a bunch of products from pro-life companies and hence give the pro-lifers just as much money as you just gave the pro-choicers.

In a free market economy your purchase is your vote. If you buy from them you are supporting the way that the company opporates. If you don't then you give the company reason to change, but it is still free to do as it wishes.

And it's not just the conservatives that do this. There was a whole "buy blue" thing that the liberals were doing suggesting that you buy from companies that make majority democratic instead of republican donations.

Hm, there are just as many of us Conservatives out there that wish we could purge our party of your type. The we are entiled to everything we have. The poor don't matter. The only important thing in life is money. Capitalism is God. Let the working class work longer at lower wages. They deserve it for being inferior. etc etc. That type.

But alas, we need you guys just as much as you need us. Really we should be two seperate parties because Christian ideology and conservatism are not compatible.

Oh and the whole gay bashing that the Christian right is doing that really is a disgrace and if they actually read their Bibles instead of pretending to, they would realize that.
