The primary culprit would be the economics of supply and demand, which enable the OPEC "fat-cats" to line their pockets with as much money as humanly possible. But, I am sure on this forum the most common answer you will get will be Bush, or American Imperialism, or some other anti-U.S. rubbish.

Stop complaining. Oil prices are dropping at massive rates of late. Just yesterday it was down to $1.03 a litre (0.2642 US Gallons). Down from a $1.30 the week before.

are you referring to the ever increasing cost of petroleum and it's derivatives? i wouldn't be surprised if our dear friend george bush helped out there (not that i think it was his actions alone).
i welcome this trend, higher petrol costs means less driving by people who don't need to and more investment into alternative fuel sources
Those idiots who don't see the harm fossile fuels are causing!

Greedy gas corporations. Following the info that was released on their profits and the lack of impact that the hurricanes, Iraq, etc. had anything to do with it I shift to them, China, and SUVs. China's demand will eventually surpass the US so that is definitely going to affect prices. But alas, such is the nature of capitalism, to exploit when you can. I'm not going against that. It just shows the human condition is nothing more than putrid.

OK, so you just dropped his name because you dislike him, not because it was relevant. Good. Now we don't have to hear another word about him, right? :)

The law of supply and demand. If we didn't use as much, it wouldn't cost as much, I blame us (consumers) first, 1) For using so much gas, 2) for not using alternatives, such as mass transit.

The Chloroplast Pigments! They know that rising oil prices will cause war and do you know what war creates? Carbon Dioxide. The plants are using this surplus Carbon Dioxide in their secret plan to overthrow the human race. Soon they will stop Oxygen production and the extinction of the human race will begin!

Supply and demand combined with natural disasters. Prices are falling because gas consumption has fallen, refineries are working again, and the weather has been very mild (reducing demand for heating oil/nat gas).
Oil companies exist to make a profit, and so have no incentive to drag prices lower other than falling demand or competition. It's good business sense to constrict supply so that the price rises and then increase supply just enough to ensure that demand doesn't fall.
If we want permanetly lower gas prices, we and the billions of others who consume it need to drive less and buy more efficent cars. We also need to invest in nonpetroleum energy.
Oil prices are set by oil supply, oil producers, and oil distributors. I blame all three.
Why? They're not doing anything wrong when they reduce supply to increase profits; it's simply good business sense. Now, that doesn't mean they should be allowed to gouge (which is difficult to define anyways). There is no right to cheap gasoline, oil, etc. We need to consume less and more efficently if we want prices to fall. Otherwise, supply is only going to increase just enough to keep up with demand at higher prices.
If you're mad at oil companies, also go after the homebuilders and developers who have driven up housing prices across the nation, forcing out people that can't afford the exorbiant prices. These guys also have record profits to boot.

The increase in gas prices was a conspiracy to drive inflation up so that the government could justify taking away more of our freedoms and liberties in the name of keeping us safe, saying that they're "caring" for us when we are in need.
