To what species does this exuvia belong?

Please submit guesses with progressively finer specificity (e.g., Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Rodentia, Muroidea, Muridae, Murinae, Rattus, norvegicus - Norway Rat); common names are permissible. I will, at my discretion, cast hints and answer questions regarding this species' general life history.

It looks like a crab but that's too easy so it must be an alien from Area 51.

Obviously that is my Great Uncle Cthulhu, though how you even managed to get a picture of that much of him is rather suprising. Last man to get that close to him went insane, gouged his own eyes out, had his feet rippped off, was turned into a cabbage, and then served to the Duchess of Glosberry.

Was Lovecraft's Cthulhu anything more than an incarnation of Shakespeare's Setebos, "the many-handed as a cuttle-fish?"

Well since I'm pretty sure that Shakespeare stole Setebos from someone, does it matter?
All writers steal from somebody, the good ones steal from enough obscure sources, and vary the result enough, that it is all but impossible to notice.

Well considering he stole Hamlet from the French writer who wrote the much more twisted, funny, looooooong & blood-thirsty "The Saga of Hamlet", I wouldn't put it past him.

No.

This species' natural range encompasses portions of the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, Malaya, Austronesia, and northern Australia.

Better not be one of those bug things. The only time I can stand them is when they're drenched in garlic butter and served on my plate...

It's funny that you mention this - they are indeed widely consumed within their native lands.

I'll say that it's aquatic (though other species of its genus have been found in trees) and leave you to determine the rest.
