Nov. 14, 2005 issue - Having been burned by false alarms in Baltimore and New York, federal and local authorities last week played down intel that a jihadist network with connections in London and Bosnia might have been plotting to attack D.C. landmarks. Scotland Yard announced late last week that two London-area suspects had been charged with terror-related counts, including possession of computer images showing how to make car bombs and "martyrdom operations vests." One suspect, Younis Tsouli, was also charged with possessing computer pics showing "a number of places" in Washington, D.C. (A third suspect faces terror-funding charges.) Counterterrorism officials in the United States and Britain, who asked for anonymity because the investigation is continuing, told NEWSWEEK that evidence suggests the plotters may have been targeting the White House and Capitol complex using homemade bombs. According to the officials, the British suspects are believed to have been in e-mail contact, via Hotmail accounts, with a suspected jihadist recruiter who used the Internet nom de guerre Maximus. According to the officials, Maximus was initially based in Sweden and moved to Sarajevo, where investigators believe he helped run a network recruiting European youth to go to Iraq. Investigators believe the network engaged in credit-card fraud to raise funds.

Yes, and I'm sure in Roman times it was a common name...

Fass, coming from such an orderly country you should know that warmongers usually have licenses and uniforms. Terrorists don't.

You know, I've seen a lot of Nazis, fascists, racists and other forms of extremists on NS, but I don't think I've ever seen any Islamic fundamentalist terrorists.

Is there some rule that says that Romans can't terrorize people? I'm sure that the people who were around when Nero was in power would disagree.

On the Internet, none of that matters.

This is all getting to be a little bit much, sure, Russell Crowe throws the odd mobile phone about, but that doesn't make him a terrorist, surely?

I had never seen any of the footage from the beheadings. I didn't think I'd be able to control my temper. When I saw those on the linked page, well, did you ever see "The Great Santini"? Remember the part where Bull is reading the paper and his wife is outside listening to the stream of obscenities coming from the house? That' was far more polite than what came out of our house an hour or so ago.

That's a great movie, too.

No, a lot of people don't seem to know the definition of "atrocity".

It's one thing to quote the dictionary - it's quite another to see an actual atrocity being committed.

Just because an act is illegal, unusual, or cruel, or performed by an armed force on civilians does not make it an atrocity. There is that element of monstrousness - it has to absolutely appall you.

Personally, Ive seen people commit worse atrocities on college campuses to their frat brothers than any Abu Graib photo Ive seen yet. And I quit taking the whiny liberals seriously a while ago.

Everyone seems to think we are treating our prisoners badly, but they have no idea how much worse it would be if we started acting how everyone claims we do.

Does anyone here seriously believe that if we wanted to have secret "torture camps", we couldn't do it without people knowing? Do you REALLY believe that if we were gonna transport people to prisons to be tortured, we'd file flight logs?

Ummm.. we do have secret torture camps - and no one would have known if some upper level CIA official had not leaked it to the Washington Post.

I may be wrong (it happens more often the older I get :D ) but I honestly believe that what the CIA is doing is quite different in location and method than what has been leaked. Again, I may be wrong, but If I wanted to do something illegal, and get away with it, the first thing I would do would be to leak to the press that I was doing something else illegal. Something horrible, and unprovable.

What better way to throw someone off track than to build a path that they can't resist taking?

Again, I may be wrong, but I have alot more faith in the sneakiness of the CIA than in the investigative powers of the Washington Post.

Just because someone uses the same name as a terrorist, doesnt mean they are one. Maximus isnt an obscure name, it's very likely that there's more than one person who uses the nickname.

Nothing I can say could make this any more ridiculous.

Maximus is not a rare handle. If you find a news report referencing that the guy has an internet handle of Reaper, or Alucard, or Dante, or even Peter_Pan, they will never find the guy by his handle alone.
