You know you can add a poll after the fact right?

I am a New Zealander and as such have never tried British Marmite but i still voted yes cause Kiwi Marmite is the best.

No, haven't tried it or have any interest in trying it. Somehow, the idea of eating some sort of brown smegma does not sound appealing.

Kiwi marmite.
I prefer it with cheese.

Marmite and Vegemite are both lovely, each in their own way. I tend to use (British) Marmite by itself to spice things up, and Vegemite almost exclusively with bread and butter.

Just this Yank's take on a couple of condiments that deserve better press than they get. (A local grocery store actually stocks Marmite, but I have to mail-order Vegemite to get it at all. Fortunately, a jar of either lasts me a long time.)

A (mildly) debilitating (and short of duration) pox on all the oppressors who would exlude the non Australian antipodeans....

That or at least a mild marmite shortage....

I'm gonna answer even though I am not British or Australian, because, well I just want to, that's why...

Marmite is good (can be used in cooking, ok on toast, great on toasted vogels, perfect to feed to kids in a sandwich with some potatoe chips thrown in...it's ok stuff (good even)

vegemite is just gross...

Is vegimite that yeast stuff to put on bread?

Because I tasted it once, and... Well...

Being Australian it wouldn't be prudent of me to support anything other than Vegemite in any shape or fashion. It's particularly good on toast with butter, in a sandwich with cheese, or on crackers with butter too.

Yes, Vegimite is "that yeast stuff" it may also be refered to as heaven come to toast.

It's been ages since I've tried Vegemite, but I like Marmite. I think marmites the stronger one, so I'll go with that.

At last a thread on a topic on which I can pontificate with authority, wisdom, and knowledge.

For I am a Marmite-loving UK citizen who currently lives in Australia.

First of all, let's clarify something important...

As the experts among you already know, the product sold under the name 'Marmite' in Australia is _not_ the product we know and love as Marmite in the UK. The latter brand name is instead used by Sanitorium (who also make something called 'Weet-Bix' that's not quite the same as the UK's Weetabix) for a product similar to Vegemite.

The main differences between British Marmite and Australian Vegemite are:

Flavour: Marmite is stronger (and saltier)

Texture: Marmite is glossier

Further confusing the issue is the presence in Australia of several competing brands, including Aussie Mite, Mighty Mite, Promite and the Australian version of Marmite. I sent all of these to my then-four year old nephew (who lives in Michigan) for Christmas last year. His expert opinion is that Mighty Mite is the best of the Australian mite products.

In Britain, it's a straight-up choice between Marmite and Vegemite. The latter surely only sells to homesick Australian backpackers.

British Marmite _is_ available in Australia if you know where to look. In Melbourne, it can be found tucked away in the CBD Myer foodhall, sold - for copyright and marketing reasons - under the name 'My Mate'.

On my visit to New Zealand last year, I noticed that our Kiwi cousins have their own 'mite' products, but I was unable to taste them, so can't offer an opinion on their versions.

I couldn't vote in the poll, 'cause there was no option for Vegemite YES and Marmite NO BLOODY WAY!!

Maybe I'm biased because I'm an Aussie born and bred, but Vegemite is far superior to Marmite. On a recent trip to England I tried Marmite once more and reaffirmed my opinion that it's thoroughly disgusting.

My American husband had no exposure to either until I gave him Vegemite a couple of years ago. He doesn't leap for it - he still prefers his peanut butter  - but he does like it and eats it reasonably regularly, even without prompting. He also tried the British marmite and his reaction was that it was pretty horrible and didn't taste anything like Vegemite (I have a British friend who has tried to convince me the two taste identical and is amused by my hatred of Marmite).

So, to cut a long story short - vote yes for Vegemite and no for Marmite (not available on the poll :p ).

Oddly enough, I have never tried them. I'm american, so I have an excuse.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that anything can compete with peanut butter. But marmite and vegimite are goo, and therefore, ought to be given a chance. :)

You're best off not. Vegemite with tomatoe, avocado & cheese on wholemeal bread is the BEST SANDWICH EVER!

Vegemite may be better than Marmite but it is no way near as good as Marmite.

Please, people! It's vegEmite. With an 'e'. Please stop misspelling the greatest tasting spread ever. :)

Hmm, someone suggested it with avacado and cheese. I've never had it with avacado - sounds great. I think they'd go really well together.

When I was a kid I used to put butter and Vegemite (about equal thicknesses) on Vita-Weets and then squeeze so there'd be little yellow and black "worms" oozing through the holes in the biscuits. That was the best...

Mind you, it's hard to beat Vegemite eaten straight off the spoon. Even though my hubby will eat in on toast or on a bikkie, he still makes a face when he sees me just eat it off the spoon.

My own personal favourite snack - Marmite and Mexicana cheese toastie. Droooool.

I still want to know who first thought Marmite might be edible. As far as I'm aware, it originates in Burton-on-trent (where all the world's best breweries are located) and is a by-product of the brewing process (??).

Which brewery worker first dropped their sarnie in the vat of sticky smelly black stuff and thought, 'it'll be alright...'?

WHAT ARE vegemite and marmite? i have gathered so far:

-spreads
-gooey/oozey
- eaten by brits/aussies/NZers/some random confused folks from the netherlands and belgium
-at least one is of a disgusting black color
-yeast-ish?
-comes in jars
- at least one is vegan?
- they are not sweet?

to sum it up: they sound really gross, but then, a certain swede thinks they are awful, and as that certain swede also thikns the same about nutella and therefore rendered himself a persona non grata as long as spread discussions are concerned they might actually be good :P

so anyone know whether they are available in germany? and/or want to ship a little something here?

WHAT ARE vegemite and marmite?

For those who are interested, here are the origins and history of Vegemite (http://www.vegemite.com.au/index.cfm?fuseaction=VegemiteDiscovery.welcome). :)

As for describing the taste, I have discovered that it's impossible to describe accurately within the confines of the English language. Salty - definitely. Kind of yeasty - yeah. But there are other flavours in there that can only be described as "Vegemite flavoured". If you do try some, I recommend a thin scraping on a piece of toast or a dry biscuit (cracker, for you Americans out there :p) as the best introduction. Don't try too much at once, and be prepared for the saltiness. (Mind you, Vegemite these days is considerably less salty than it used to be - they cut the quantity down in the 80's.)

I haven't been able to figure out how people can eat something that looks and tastes like something scraped out of an old sewer pipe.

Vegemite or Marmite, eh? Being an Aussie, Vegemite is a local staple, and I like it, though I prefer domestically owned equivalents to Real McCoy (tm). Marmite is also quite nice, though not as nice as Vegemite.

But, my vote has to go to PROMITE, BITCHES! Promite beats the crap out of both Vegemite and Marmite.

And is still made in Burton-on-Trent...

A very good friend of mine used to work for Marmite in Burton, and she was the source of all sorts of fascinating information on the production and marketing of Marmite.

Incidentally, while (British) Marmite may be hard to source in Australia, Unilever do sell Bovril here.

"What's Bovril" ask the Americans....

It's essentially Marmite/Vegemite that you dilute and then drink hot (or use as a stock base).

I live in Britain, and I've never even heard of this 'vegemite'. Doesn't matter anyway -- Marmite was recently declared the King of the Universe, so I'm OK with it.
