Why the hell are they fighting so hard to keep torture? I mean, setting aside for a moment the view of most psychologists that torture is, on a whole, ineffective, isn't this what the war on terror is fighting AGAINST?

I mean, martial law and disappearing citizens without a trial may be effective for keeping things orderly, but that's not what America is about.

Suppressing free speech may help to keep racial tensions down, but that's not what America is about.

Depriving all people of guns may cut down on gun deaths, but that's not what America is about.

Torturing our enemies MAY produce SOME actionable intelligence, but that's not what America is all about.

Period.

The fact that the Bush Administration is fighting so hard for this tells me that they really have no idea what OUR America is all about. They're not protecting OUR America. They're covering their own ass.

I'd be lying if I said this was a surprise.

Republicans are piling off the Bush wagon with all speed and taking the wheels with them.

I'll tell you--and this goes for both parties--if your representative votes against this and you don't hang it around his or her neck next time they're up for re-election, then you don't deserve a vote. I believe in few absolutes, but this is one of them--torture is inexcusable, and we ought not be countenancing it as a nation. It's sickening. And if either of my Senators votes against this amendment, or if my representative votes against it in the House, then I'll do whatever I can, party aside, to see that they go down next time they're running for any office.
