Mort-ton
06-11-2005, 10:53
ty for all your comments.
british can be defined here as someone living within the british isles. also acceptable are those who have visited the country and at least 2 of these stores so a valid comparison can be made. basically ill leave it to u!

I voted forWaitrosebut only because I use their online shopping service Ocado.
Both my local Safeways turned into Morrisons and seem to have be employing the living dead ever since.
I work above a Sainsburys, but they seem incapable of keeping basics stocked on the shelves or enough staff on the tills when they are needed.
There's no Asda near where I live or work.
Tescos are ok in the large and super size stores but there smaller stores really let them down.

(for me at least)
and all this talk of morrisons... i just voted for them in the poll by mistake :headbang:
my beef with them is that their marketing message with regard to their food is that it is cheap. i don't think food should be cheapened like that... which is why i like sainsbury's (quality) or preferably waitrose when i can afford it. or even better, farmers' markets, farm shops and the like :)

we use ocado now aswell its really wicked! otherwise we go to morrisons neerby. yes online services count as shopping in this poll.
also morrisons are still converting the safeways supermarkets into morrisons but they are employing the same people who they employed wen it was safeways. therefore the newly converted safeways are only morrisons in name as the majority of the staff are from the original safeways.

btw for those of u who think morrisons is only up north, it is expanding down south, primarily due to its complete takeover of safeways. i live almost as far south as u can get and there is a morrisons 20 mins away.
also thanx for voting ppl-ur posts are also appreciated as they make my day to read!:D ps ocado shoppers should vote waitrose.

Morrisons is cheap AND good quality. In my experience, it's better quality than Sainsburys on most things. The only reason Sainsburys and Waitrose can charge as much as they do is because of the snobbery factor - people are willing to pay a high price for food because they think expense = good quality, even if that is not always the case.

I went for Tescos, nice stuff and good value.
Used to go to Asda but ever since Walmart took it over it's gone really downhill. They now tend to stock vast amounts of crap, empty the shelves then get something else in - no consistency and quality is really down.
Sainsburies near us is good but the shop manager gets board and changes the shop layout every 2 weeks. It's like a new challenge every time you go shopping to find everything.
(BTW: are you trying to rope us in for free market research?)

I can't beleive Aldi wasn't on the poll
Well the safeways near here turned into a morrisons which has now turned into a sainsbury's. The waitrose here is too small for any decent shop and it's too snobyish. Tesco's is big and cheap and we don't have an Asda nearby.
Talking about north/south divide, is booths only in the north? I only see one when I go visit my grandparents.

Kudlastan
06-11-2005, 22:58
it has to be TESCO! Why? Because they employ me behind their lottery and cigarette kiosk, giving me plenty of money during my time as a student to go and spend on booze!
Plus sainsburys is poorer value than tesco, whilst morrisons food tends to be poorer quality. They also treat their workers like crap, make them wear APRONS and TIES and pay them poorly. Morrisons are also really stupid with their store layouts... when they bought up lots of safeway stores recently they redesigned them, even the modern stores, narrowing aisles and changing the fruit and veg sections into 'market places', with stupid fake carts of fruit and veg dotted all over the place and getting in the way. Shopping in morrisons just makes me angry!

its ok that u have a problem with the layout of the store, but u cant really blame morrisons for changing the layout to that of their own. after all, safeways in essence failed. And morrisons havent been doing too badly up till now, financially at least!
Morrisons are just putting their own mark on the place. if they didn't do that, they would fail instantly and become a non-entity. just like a morrisons store neer where i live.....
This is just one more reason to shop at morrisions.

I don't do much shopping. But when I do, the closest three branches to me are Sainsburys, Tescos and Asda. Sainsburys tries to be a premium market brand, and in a couple of cases succeeds (and keeps out all those piffy lower class yobs ;) ). But Sainsburys rarely has the stuff I want -- they're almost always out of stock. My aunt works in my local branch though, which may explain the inefficiency :).
Asda is cheap and has an enormous variety (in my local branch, anyway) of stuff. But it's always crowded -- you can barely move! They've extended the branch, but it's just allowed even more people to get crammed into it.
Tescos, then, is the best in my book. It has everything I want, it's not too expensive, and it's nowhere near as crowded as Asda.
Normally, though, I screw them all and get someone else to go shopping for me -- I hate shopping. For anything. It's not a man's sport, shopping. It just doesn't work -- we'd much rather be out with a spear hunting something down and slaughtering it. Buying pre-killed food seems a little dull in comparison.
Sainsburys, mainly just because it's smaller than most of the others. And it's easy to get served there. :p

i have to say, i hate tesco and asda. i know they're probably only SEEM more corporate-giant than, say, waitrose... but i hate them anyway. and asda's clothes are really nasty.

07-11-2005, 18:27
Bleh, they're all crap. If there were ANY local shop around where I live then I'd use them as they'd be a) closer b) better quality on the stuff I really care about c) cheaper. I so wish I still lived in a Turkish area. The bread they do make is so good and doesn't melt in your mouth like a skip (the crisp, fool) like supermarket breads do.
Asda - I don't like having to squeeze through an isle barely big enough for one person with an fat ass full of change.
Sainsbury's - for the upper class wannabees
Waitrose - ridiculously expensive
Tesco - I'd rather not have to wade through ten isles of DVDs, Books and clothing before I get to the fruit and veg.
Morrisons - Why didn't they keep Safeway's fruit and veg suppliers?! They were actually good. Plus it's too low brow to carry a decent selection of some of the items I want. And, no, I don't mean pies. >.<
All that being said I actually shop at Tesco's because they're my nearest grocer/green grocers.
And the comment about people packing your bags. Some supermarkets offer that now, but I always refuse, because I don't want some low paid idiot packing things in any old how. Bag packing is a craft. I like items with like. Cold with cold so they don't melt as much. The bathroom stuff with the bathroom stuff so I can just chuck that bag into the bathroom when I get home and forget about about. And the impulse buy bag with the things I want to eat now... c.c
I didn't mean to rant... honnest... I really didn't know I cared that much about supermarkets. crud.
i have to say, i hate tesco and asda. i know they're probably only SEEM more corporate-giant than, say, waitrose... but i hate them anyway. and asda's clothes are really nasty.
No, Tesco does have a far larger share than necessary to get investigated by the Monopolies Commision (Around 40%? I don't know exactly, I gave up economics last year.:p ), btu they've judged that it's not actually using that against the public interest, so they're allowed to continue to grow.

yes, tesco has been investigated for its excessive share of the market and wish to continue expanding but apparently they are allowed to continue building supermarkets-in the form of tesco extras, and the little mini tescos which ive forgotten the name for. apparently the commitee believes that these are not supermarkets and tesco have not been prosecuted-therefore they are allowd to expand further with this trickery.
by the way i think the percentage of the market owned by tesco is over 40%.
around 50 maybe?

Firstly, it's the Competition Commission (one of the few things I remember from A Level Economics. That and the Consumption Function. Whoever named those things was a legend). Secondly, Tesco currently has a 30.6 - 30.8% share of the grocery market, which is still enough to be investigated - the technical definition of a monopoly is owning over 25% of the market. I have a stack of Grauniads on my bed from the last week that I could go through to find out the exact details, but I just can't be arsed. Sorry.
I voted Waitrose - it has the best quality food, and the best ethical record.
I don't shop at supermarkets if I can help it - I get an organic veg box delivered to my door each week, and use the local market for other things (more cheese, basically). I'm vegetarian so I don't worry about meat, but I'd get that from the market as well if I were, and there's a lovely little health food shop I know that has a massive range of vegetarian products - soya, tofu, quinoa, cous cous, houmus, etc.
My, my, you all look so small from up here on the moral high ground :p :D
Secondly, Tesco currently has a 30.6 - 30.8% share of the grocery market, which is still enough to be investigated - the technical definition of a monopoly is owning over 25% of the market.
From what I remember from Economics, the definition of monopoly is a 100% market share - but the government operates in its own, wicked way. However, is an experience with British supermarkets in other parts of Europe a valid reason to answer the poll? I thought they were disappointing - are they all the same all over Europe?
IT's the best of a bad lot here unfortunately.
Asda always feels dirty and cheap oh and overcrowded
Morrisons peddles cheap tat and treats its staff badly
Sainsburys, noticing other shops peddle cheap tat are beginning to do the same. Oh and feels more expensive than Tesco
Waitrose, highest quality but you pay more for it and less choice.
Tesco the best balance between the negatives but treats its suppliers like crap.
This is of course MY OPINION. Do we still have free speech in the UK since President Blair rose to the top?

I'm sorry, I should clarify.
In England, under current competition rules, a monopoly is defined something along the lines of 'when a company has a sufficient share of (x) market to distort and/or control the market beyond its means'. So, under the rules of the Competition Commission (:p ), controlling over 25% of the market share constitutes a monopoly.

At least competition is wanted in England. But what about British supermarkets in other parts of Europe? Are they the same as in Britain?
the Competition Commision in Norway = The Norwegian Competition Authority. Is that a better name?

yes i also thought that a monopoly situation was when one company owned the entire market. in fact each government can decide to alter this rule if it wishes to suit its own peoples needs and wants!

"Broken biscuits"? What the fuck!?
Ok. They're biscuits, right? But, y'see, and here's the clever bit, they're broken. Got it? Cool.
Basically, in the manufacturing process, some biscuits get broken, sadly. So they thought, "'Ang on a sec...if we bag these up, and put 'broken biscuits' on the label, we might be able to sell the li'l buggers!"

interesting-ty for the info.
am i right in saying though that wal-mart is the largest nationwide chain?
and if not who is?
btw are u american?
Yes, I am American.
You could, possibly, consider Wall-Mart the largest supermarket. It is the largest retailer in the USA. The problem is that only a small portion of the wallmarts carry food products. Most of them are just large department stores.
Honestly, besided the "Wall-Mart Superatores", I can't think of another nationwide supermarket chain.
