Sen. John McCain fighting to make the US respected once more.

Sen. John McCain, a republican and an honest politician, has vowed to attatch a rider on every Senate bill to prevent abuses like those that occured at Abu Graib. If the prez wants to veto McCain's prisoner abuse legislation he's going to have to veto every bill that crosses his desk.

Don't be surprised if the Busheviks try to discredit McCain or find some other way to get him to stop passing those bills. Cutting skimpy deals possibly.

Yeah, that's why we need to elect him president. Maybe other politicians will take a hint.

I happen to like McCain. He's pretty honest, for a politician, and besides ... he's a bro and a POW to boot. Go, John! :D

Hmm, the White House is willing to go along with the deal...so long as the CIA is exempt.

Am I the only one who gets the feeling that if they get the deal like that, the CIA will be ferrying a whole lot more prisoners?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you want this stuff to stop, pass a law against it.

If you want the CIA to be included in stopping, make sure you write your Congressmen and Senators.

They might as well publically anounce that the CIA tortures people like a Soviet gulag.

McCain is one of two Republicans I can say I respect. The other is Colin Powell. And it's for stuff like this that I respect him. The man has the balls to break with the prez when neccisary, and the grit to follow through. I'd love to see Bush veto a 'Support the Troops' bill because McCain attached an anti-torture addendum to it. It would make my year.:p

I may not always agree with McCain, but I think he'd make a good leader. If the Dems don't field anyone good in '08, I wouldn't have much trouble voting for McCain if he was running.

McCain ever running is a highly doubtable occurrence.

That's the idea behind this bill isn't it? This one is all-encompassing, including the CIA. The admin is trying to get exemption for them.

Yes, that's the idea. I only posted that because so many posters here of late would rather wring their hands and moralize about the abuse of prisoners, rather than pass laws.

wringing your hands obviously does no good, but neither does begging those who run the show to play nice. unfortunately, it may eventually be solved the italian way:

Somehow I doubt that.

1. McCain is an ex-POW...and knows what it is like to REALLY be mistreated. So this is an issue that is close to his heart.

2. He is not without considereable political pull in both the Republican Party and the congress at large. If anyone can get it done, it is him.

Go John!

Especially now that any Republican politician with any sort of foresight will want to distance themselves from the president.

I'd like to second those opinions. I'm not a US citizen but he is one of the very few Republicans I respect.

Yup! He had it so tough they put up a bust of him at the lake he bailed out over and I am sure those were some awful soviet cigarettes and the instant coffee in his survival pack he was smoking while giving all the interviews to VNA international just a few days later. John McCain is/was and always will be a traitor and collaborator and the only truthful thing out of his mouth is that he shamed his father and grandfather's name.
As far as I am concerned he is a total embrassement to any self respecting American with a sense of decency... or did everyone forget what his idea of a funny joke is?

There was a movie about him. He did not have it good at all. And I agree with the others, if no good Democrat is up for 08 McCain as my vote
