Goth is just another word for conformitive nonconformity. Or, another way to get through adolescence...no matter how long it lasts. No better or worse than any other groupthink.

A Goth is a member of one of the many Germanic tribes the plagued the Roman Empire (mostly Western Rome at that point) during the fall of the West. They were divided into multiple tribes, the main ones being Visigoths and Ostragoths. Each group of Goths were led by a Germanic king.
Oh, you were speaking of the angst filled people that wear lots of black clothing and listen to rock music that makes a Zepplin fan like me cringe? You ment goths. The proper noun is for a cohesive ethnicity, not a group of people that even D&D geeks like me couldn't deal with in high school.

That's funny. I like ambient/darkwave goth music. (Try Projekt's Dark Noel series sometime...) I certainly don't do the kabuki/piercing/angst thing. (Goth wasn't even a music style (unless you count Carmina Burana) when I was in HS...)
Oh, and Voltaire's work is a scream. I love "Banned on Vulcan".

Actually, I take it back. I was originally refering to the type of music they listen to which encompasses a variety of genres. I must now go put my foot into my own mouth because I just thought of some that I found pleasing. That is what happens when you try to make an absolute statement most of the time.

The headline "GOTH MURDER MADNESS comes up
The bimbo kinda has a bash at goths
Then Volitaire makes a short statement about "What is Goth"
Kinda a waste of time really

SPOT ON!!! Hilarious!

I grew up in Wyoming virtually on an Indian Reservation... all social everything is 10 years behind there. I graduated HS in 1986. I didn't hear any Goth until I went to Germany in 1988.

Well, honestly, I don't remember it actually being called "goth" at the time, but that's what it was.

Isn't it though? We would have one playing a game with us, and his characters always sucked. Guy got mad when something bad to his character too. It was just a game we told him, but he would always go into this angsty spiel about the whole world being against him, even his friends.
This is why I always posted a no angst rule whenever I ran a D&D game. It ruins stuff for everybody. Actually, I have found that some of the best people to game with are Christians. I am not kidding. I have had more fun and hilarious games since I started as a Sunday School teacher at my current church than I ever had when I was in high school.

Haaang on.... yes, ok, there are those, but they usualy grow out of it....
BUT there's loads of people still into their goth lifestyle, music, clubs, who simply like the scene, (or who want to leave the kids with the babysitter for the evening) :)
