What politicians do you admire?

They don't have to be domestic to you or anything -- just share some of your top picks for admirable politicians. Whether you agree with their politics isn't important -- please just drop the name, position, and a glowing review :)

To start us off, I want to put Representative James A. Traficant Jr. (D-Ohio from 1985 to 2002) out there. Not only does he have tremendous courage to stand up for practically anything he believes, but I admire ANYone who will end a speech to the United States House of Representatives with "Beam me up, Mr. Speaker."

Former german chancellor Helmut Schmidt, for several reasons:

First: Dealing decisively and energetically with the great fllod in northern germany in 1962, bending formalities, accessing the NATO allies for help in shortcut manner, saving a lot of lives

Second: Him being chancellor in a difficult time, german RAF terrorism, plane hijacking in mogadischu and making a good figure at it...and for leaving in dignity in 1983

Third: For being intelligent, honest and correct...qualities seldom found in politicians nowaday

Fourth: Being from Hamburg, Germany :D

Theodore Roosevelt.

Believed in helping the workers.
Went and fought in a war, while he was a politician.
Created lots of parks.
Had an attitude, and didn't just talk.
Was from New York, and a cowboy.
He made the Panama Canal.
The last good Republican.

Hitler fixed Germany and a good speaker.
Then he proceeded to unfix it again. He wasn't a good politician.

===============================

I'd also add Willi Brandt (helping to keep the peace by trying to be nice for a change with the Soviets) and Ludwig Erhard (for being a very good economist who actually achieved something in practice).

Then Joschka Fischer of course, for being the first minister to be sworn in in Jeans and Sneakers.
And Gerhard Schröder for turning out not to be a push-over afterall.

Oh, and Franz Müntefering for being a worker's hero of the old skool - his kind will be sadly missed in the future.

Wrong! We (in germany) still suffer from his "fixing" and his speeches were decidedly not by himself...more a sign of the times, today no one would listen to a small man with a funny moustache screaming and spitting in his speeches

Or did I miss the "irony" sign

Being native to Ohio, I have to say Traficant ROCKS. If I remember correctly, the Wikipedia article on James Traficant has some links to transcripts of his trial, where he PWNED his inquisitors.
