This is a hoax, right? Because if it isn't, then it's the stupidest damned thing I've ever heard. Who the hell needs a patent on something they already have copyright on? What, they're going to prevent anyone else from ever writing a coming of age story set at MIT ever again? More power to them, then.

There is no way this will hold up. Generic plots can't even be copyrighted, much less patented.
Still, it's possible to admire the guy for trying, even while beating him over the head with a large blunt object.
