They're always going on about how teenagers are always fighting, drinking, having sex and doing drugs. It makes me feel really sad and left out.

They've been saying that since I was in high school back in the 1970s.

Don't worry, you'll catch up one day.

Sadly, it is this behavior that makes the news, because no one wants to hear about the responsible, conscientious teens. They prefer to read about things that keep their cherished fears and predjudices intact.

it is the same thing about Christians, they don't want to hear about the Christians like me who are out to help people, and respect others rights, they only want to hear about the Pat Roberstons and Jerry Fallwells of the world.

Solution: vist a bar, get drunk and smoke some weed, put the make on some other guy's g/f and fight him for her. When you win, slam-frak her for about an hour. That should do it. Then you won't feel so left out, eh? :D

Yes, and you will also learn what it feels like to be gang-raped when you go to jail :)

Indeed! The Same things happen with Satanists. I personally respect those christians (or any other group for that matter) that do their best to live by thier beleifs. Sadly, the actions of a few tarnish the Image and reputation of the many. And when you get right down to it, teenagers have no politcal power, making them perfect targets for descimination.

Yeah - and then the media complain when teenagers aren't interested in politics.

I know about the satanist problem, I have a friend who is a satanist, and he is one of the nicest people I know, to be fair though when I first met him I freaked out that he was a satanist but that was because I didn't know about the LaVey type satanist, I only knew the stereotype of satanist. I think that satanists are very misrepresented. I don't agree at all with what they believe but, I think too many times they are hated because of things that have nothing to do with the truth. :(

Then they foist of a bunch a apolitical pop-culture crap in an attempt to manipulate teens. Sad.

Hey...We're doing our best to keep up with the stereotypes. It isn't my fault that they expect me to be able to kill a handle of vodka by myself. I'm up to a liter. WHAT MORE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT?!

Don't worry about it. I'm pissed at the media, too, but for different, but similar reasons.

what you need to understand about the media is that bad news sells, good news does not.

Therefore, it sells more papers to put a headline up about a teenager that got drunk and went driving and killed someone...than about the teenager who climbed a tree to rescue the old lady's kitty-cat, who was very close to power lines.

That is just the way it is.

Most minority groups suffer in a similar way. Example: The recent flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. They had two pictures, side-by-side, in our local newspaper.

One had a white man dragging a pallet of food. The other had a black man carrying life-essential supplies from a flooded-out drugstore.
The caption under the white man said the white man had FOUND FOOD.
The caption under the black man said he had LOOTED SUPPLIES.

Fact is...both men had taken life-necessary supplies that did not belong to them. But the way in which the stories were reported was very different.

teenagers are a group everyone wants to believe the worst of. Same for people of color.

Likewise, people to the left of the political spectrum, like me....never have anything good reported about us. Gay and lesbian folks never have good news reported about them, either.

The media constantly pits groups against one another, and the only people not hurt by it are white, Christian, heterosexual males. The message is that they are better than everyone else.

If you want to change this, start by writing the editor of your paper. Get other to write their editors.

Maybe you could even offer to do an op-ed article once a week, or once a month, highlighting the GOOD things teenagers have done. And then go out there and find the kinds of stories that you feel should be reported, and are not being reported...and then YOU get out there and report them!

Enough people like you doing this can, over time, make a difference.

Try it.

Hear, hear. Left out, indeed.

Make all drinking, fucking and drug-taking public events whenever and wherever possible. Especially catered ones.

Exactly what I just said, but in fewer words. Great post, Big Jim!

This is exactly the problem. People do not want their oh-so-comfortable bigotries and prejudices challenged! They want to read about things that validate what they already believe.

As a transgendered person myself...I am very much aware of this problem.

They don't want to read about the transgendered person that pulled two people from a burning car, but they sure as hell want to read about the transgendered person that barricaded themselves into ther house and shot two cops! (Yes, this actually happened, in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, back in 1995.)

People want to hear that all people "different" from them are bad, evil, monstrous...because it allows them to continue to hold thier bigotry and their prejudices unchallenged.

Sorry, but, as long as Christians...and so-called Christians get their way 99.99 percent of the time in this country, you get no sympathy.

My people have been dragged down, tarred and feathered, and punished mercilessly in the name of Christianity for far too long now. Maybe REAL Christians like you need to step up to the plate a little more, and shout down the fuckers like Falwell and Robertson. Until you do...no sympathy for you...because, if you fail to shout them down, then you are giving tacit approval to their heinous actions in the name of your faith.

YOU take your faith back. Then maybe I'll have some sympathy.

I'm sick of being victimized by Christians, and then having them whine about the way they get a bad name.

I just make a point of having much more fun than they do. I hear 'em whine when their wives aren't around.
