Has anyone here ever gotten teargassed?

I plan on getting teargassed sometime in April.

See, here at MSU, we have a tradition. We get really drunk, and when our Basketball team loses in the NCAA tourny, we riot. As part of the tradition, the East Lansing police department comes out, their belts full of teargas. And we get teargassed.

The ELPD goes through more Teargas in one night that most nations go through in a year.

Is teargas really that bad?

CS is not bad. The usual component of teargas grenades.
Mace is not bad (CN spray).

Pepper spray is really bad.

I've been sprayed with pepper spray and hit with a stun gun. It was all in good drunken fun and wasn't connected with law enforcement in any way.

Well, once when I was a child, but that was more an accident. It didn't hurt that much, but it was difficult to keep my eyes open.

I'm sure that the stuff that the police are using nowadays is way more powerful.

Baton-charged, yes. Tear-gassed, no.

CS is not bad. While in basic training, they make us go into a room full of CS gas and take our gas mask off, and then make us talk and breathe.

I had no trouble at all. I can inhale CS and have no effects other than watery eyes.

CN has almost no effect on me.

Pepper spray, especially if you inhale it, can make you really feel like you're being smothered. And it burns far worse than the other two.

It's proper bad, yes. I've gotten teargassed a couple of times in connection with squatting actions and protests-turned-riots, and you'll want to get a gas mask. In many places in Europe they can be acquired relatively easily.

Failing that, a cloth soaked in vinegar will protect you in the time needed to beat a retreat out of the gas. If you for some reason don't come prepared, you can piss on a cloth and use that.

You can get Fox in both spray and foam, with dye and without, and at 5% or 10%.

Any one of those that hits you in the face (and especially if you inhale it) is bad, bad news.

No, I was inhaling CS in the Army. And was sprayed with CS and pepper spray by friends (we wanted to know if they were really effective).

Not that I don't wince when I see protesters getting pepper sprayed.

Water cannon are more of a European phenomenon. Rarely used in the US.

Nah. We never do anything serious. We don't rate anything above teargas, and the occasional sponge bullet.

I guess thats what I got a double dose of, then. You're effectively out of the fight, once you get this treatment. It was hard to express my feeling that the additional kicking,punching and stomping wasnt needed.
Just trying to focus on getting a breath of air again, which seemed as if it would never happen again.

During some recent World Bank protests here in DC, some idiot protesters were trying to scale a fence. The police were on the other side of the fence.

I watched the police calmly walk up to the fence, hold the spray carefully a few inches from the climber's face, and empty the can.

In a few seconds, six protesters were flopping on the ground, gasping like fish.

I know what it feels like. I'd rather get hit with a baton.

Yes, I've been teargassed numerous times by the nice men in blue. They even managed to teargass themselves as well as us on one occation.

And yes, teargass is pretty bad, but it depends a lot on the situation. If you're smart, you won't try to throw a grenade back at the coppers. Take my word for it, it's not worth it.

Bring lots of citrus acid, water & a gasmask and you'll be fine.

It's unpleasant, but managable. Try and avoid it. Bring a gas mask if you can.

If I didnt know first hand what you were saying,I'd laugh at that. I probably farted too-maybe thats provoked the extra punches.
