Long hair on a man

How do you feel about it? If you're a man, how long is yours (and I do mean hair)?

This post is partly inspired by melancholy. I've had long hair for pretty much as long as I can remember. Up until last July when I started my military service. My military career ended up being a pretty brief one, which just adds to the pain of loss.

See, I've never thought of myself as a very vain person or overly concerned with my appearance, and I most definitely didn't think my hair meant that much to me. I was probably going to cut it off anyway; I hadn't really taken good care of it and it was in pretty awful shape, not to mention that I also wanted to try out what the short hair feels like.

Now, after four months, the novelty of the short look has kinda worn off, and boy do I miss my hair. Sure it had its own drawbacks; it took ages to dry after a shower, it was always on my face, brushing it was sometimes a pain when it really decided to snag, people always mistook you for either a hippy or a goth... But I still miss it.

After four months of growing, my hair's finally starting to cover my ears. I've already entered the mullet phase, but the even more annoying 'not long enough for a ponytail, always in your eyes' -phase is still a long way off. When, some day, it's finally below my shoulders, it's not coming back up before it falls off on its own, and even then I'll probably get a wig.

And how do I feel about long hair on men in general? I think the western trends of male and female hair are all wrong. Some women can look really sexy with short hair, but I've yet to see a guy who definitely wouldn't look better with long.

Bah, i've seen a lot of guys that wouldn't look better with long hair, as far as i'm concerned you're very lucky if you can pull off the long haired look properly.

What hair of mine that hasn't turned gray has turned loose! I suppose I could always let it grow long in back and wear a Willie Nelson pony tail! LOL!

Heh, I've been growing mine for about a year and I really like it so far. It's a pain to brush it sometimes, like you mentioned, but I don't see anything wrong with long-haired guys.

My hair is, I don't know, about 8 inches.

Too hot for me to grow mine long down here in Florida, and I've also got Eutrusca's problem with it being "loose." Rogaine for the last 4 years has stopped the damage and grown some back, but it's still very patchy up top, and there are few things sadder than a bald man with a ponytail.

Personally, I don't like long hair on a man. It just doesn't look good in my opinion. Granted, it's my opinion, and other people might think it looks good. I keep my hair relatively short, and I don't believe it has ever covered my ears, but my hair grows pretty fast so unless I get a haircut every month, my hair is a mess.

*measures with ruler* er, that's about... 45-50 cm long? That's actually pretty long i guess :p

The solution is not to brush it. Just make dreadlocks.

I think it's a bit of a misconception that all hair types eventually naturally dread. I don't brush my hair, and seldom wash it; but it's boringly straight/European so I doubt it'll do anything as exciting as form dreadlocks any time soon - at least without dramatic intervention...

My hair is almost down to my waist. My wife likes it that way, so I'm keeping it. It's starting to turn white (not just gray, but pure white, which actually looks pretty good) and luckily shows no signs of getting any thinner. However, my father didn't start losing his hair until his mid-40s, so I'm not out of the woods on that score yet.

I cut it short once, years ago, while job-hunting - big mistake. It took five years to grow back properly. I'm not making that mistake again. Fortunately I'm good enough at what I do that I won't have to do that again, and I'm in a field where a bit of eccentricity is not only tolerated, but viewed as a sign that one must be pretty good.

Well i'm one of them. I have pretty short hair, although I went through the long-hair stage. However, my hair is really thick and course (...not like Black people...kinda like dog hair...) and I already have to condition to keep it normal. I look so much better with short hair.

Some men look good with long hair - others don't. It depends. Same thing with short hair - it doesn't look right on some people.

Mine is still very military short. But that's because it looks good this way on me, and is easy to take care of.

As long as the hair is clean and reasonably well styled, it shouldn't matter (unless you work around rotating machinery that can catch it and tear it out).

you know that makes me extra-glad i decided not to go for that full-on haircut last month! i have long hair and have had so for the last few years. its currently at an annoying stage (which i've never been past before) in that its well past the shoulders at the back, but the sides and front just kinda sit on my shoulders... which is annoying. looking forward to it being properly past my shoulders and down my back for the first time, and being able to do a decent ponytail for a change :)
mine too is pretty thick and there's lots of volume, so i really have to keep on top of its condition or i look like a tramp very quickly :P

overall, long hair on men is not just acceptable, its good. if it looks better or you feel better with it, or even you would look worse with short hair (as in my case ;)), then just go for it... i don't see what the stigma against long hair on blokes is about frankly

I've got long-ish hair - maybe 10 inches. And it looks good...at least I think so. A couple of problems though - firstly, I frequently get mistaken for a girl - including one time sat at a bus stop with my girlfriend when a drunk man came up and said 'Hey girls, how's it going?' :p Secondly, it gets rather manky after a sustained period of moshing :( . Ah well, it's worth it.

I used to have long hair, but after two terms of it being blown around by the gales that constantly stream through Cambridge (England) I had it cut short (grade 3). I miss not being able to grab it when I'm thinking (that probably sounds insane to a lot of you, but holding on to your hair really seems to help you concentrate), or hide behind it when I'm feeling shy - I certainly feel more exposed with short hair. On the up side, it dries really quickly, doesn't need combing, and requires almost no other maintenance. Plus people don't think I'm a hippie any more - but I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

It doesn't sound insane. I too had a habit of playing with my hair while thinking, running my fingers through it or twirling it around my index finger. I miss that too.

hide behind it when I'm feeling shy

I think long hair looks good on some guys, and looks completely horrible on others. Then again, maybe they just have crappy hair cuts. But yeah, for the guys that can pull off ong hair, they tend to look especially nice.

On a reversed note, I (being a girl) had a buzzcut for three years when I was younger.

I once had long hair, just past my shoulders, and for a while I liked it. But, considering how my hair can get quite curly (read tangled), I decided to finally cut it. Now, for at least half my lifetime, I've had short hair, usually ranging from a few centimeters to at most, an inch and a half.

Funny thing is...I'm considering having my hair grow out again. I'm just debating what to say to my girlfriend, as she's kinda favoring the short hair.

Wonder if I should put up a poll on this, and provide a pic for all to cast their opinions...

Personally, I have long-ish hair (don't know the length, but it's longer than most guys I know). I've found I've gotten more compliments from women since I grew it out, and that I look better with it long. I think part of it is that, from what I understand, long hair tends to make your face look thinner, which helps me out a lot. I've only had one person tell me I looked better with it shorter, but even that person was referring to when it wasn't really all that short, but was more like at a halfway point (shaggy, if you will).

Really? Is this confirmed in peer-reviewed press?

Seriously, though, I've encountered this attitude before, when I had hair past my shoulders, usually from groups of drunk townies. When they got closer, and realised that I was well over 6 feet tall, and better than 200 pounds, MOST tended to recant....

Indeed, one of my friends is a petite, pretty goth boy - with hair halfway down his back. He tends to have his masculinity and gender-orientation attacked regularly - sometimes even to the extent that 'brave' mobs of townies physically attack him for his obvious 'sissiness'.... Heh, my hair's just past the bottom of my shoulderblades. I'm going for ass-length, and judging by its current pace, it'll be there not too long from now.

I never get problems from anyone... I think that's because 1: Most people like it, and 2: The ones who don't like it aren't as big as I am, so they just keep their mouths shut (I also have that "I'll fuck up your world" look on my face most of the time).

I say keep your long hair. Too many people have short/puffy hair these days. I've always had long hair, and it's always been a hit. And, whenever I've had it cut, people have always been saddened. "What happened to your hair!?", and "You didn't need to get it cut!" (my thoughts exactly) are staples when I get an unwanted haircut (thanks, dad. you're a smart one).

Keep the hair, dude. Fight the power!

I think most people, male or female, should have long hair. The problem is that some guys with long hair don't take care of it. Of course, with some people, taking care of their hair in a long state is very difficult. BTW, I have long hair that I've dyed blonde (not bleached though).

Men with long hair are sissies.

I guarantee that you would not have the guts to say this to my face. :D

Seriously, though, I've encountered this attitude before, when I had hair past my shoulders, usually from groups of drunk townies. When they got closer, and realised that I was well over 6 feet tall, and better than 200 pounds, MOST tended to recant....

Yeah, me too. The conversation often goes like this:
Redneck 1: "Look, it's a guy with long hair! Let's kick his ass!"
Redneck 2: "Uh, dude, it's a really big guy with long hair. Let's kick someone else's ass, OK?"

sad isn't it :(
but also, if you think about it for a moment (TM ;)), the person who is perfectly comfortable going round with long "feminine" hair has to be more secure in their sexuality than those chavs who insist on questioning (to put it mildly) the sexual orientation and masculinity of every other person they see
bloody chavs

All too true. They're quite pathetic, really. Every time some drunk redneck yells "Fag!" in my direction, I just yell back, "Wishful thinking will get you nowhere!"

They're stupid, too. How many gay men actually have long hair? All of the gay men I know (a small number, it's true) have short hair. A guy with long hair is almost certainly heterosexual.

absolutley true - of the three gay blokes i know, there's a 100% rate of short-and-very-tidy hair... i'm pretty sure most gay men wouldn't be seen dead with long hair unless it were properly styled (a la jonathan ross (http://www.handbag.com/graphics/library3/cajonothanross.jpg)over jack sparrow (http://www.usagichan2.com/Comiket64/images/CM64-Sun126.JPG)), which, its safe to say, mine isn't :p

This is true. I know a guy with long, straight blonde hair who doesn't wash it nearly enough and it just looks greasy. It really is quite revolting. You find this more on guys than girls it seems. They don't seem to realise that you don't treat all hair the same and with more hair, there's more of it to take care of.

Now messy is different. Messy hair can be good. But dirty hair is just baaad.

EDIT: This "whole long hair on men = girly" thing I really don't get. On the right person it can be very masculine.

My hair is almost down to my waist. My wife likes it that way, so I'm keeping it. It's starting to turn white (not just gray, but pure white, which actually looks pretty good) and luckily shows no signs of getting any thinner. However, my father didn't start losing his hair until his mid-40s, so I'm not out of the woods on that score yet.

you dont inherit baldness from your father, you get it from your mother. so you better check your mom's father to see if you are out of the woods. if, however, your mother is seriously balding, you will lose your hair.

not that genetics is the whole story.

You know, historical, long hair on men is seen as a token of masculinity, even in the bible (e.g. Samson).
The same goes for men wearing earrings, although I'm not a fan of that. Imo very few men can wear earrings without looking gay/retarded/marginal.

Actually, the thing with Samson was that he was a Nazarite. The Nazarite vow, among other things, said you cannot cut your hair while you are under the vow (some people accepted the Nazarite vow for a period of time, others, like Samson, accepted it as a permanent way of life). This isnt because of anything having to do with masculinity, it was simply the external identifying mark of the Nazarites (and some speculate, it was also meant symbolically as renouncing a focus on outward appearance). Samson lost his strength, not because his long hair was the source of it, but because the cutting of his hair ended his Nazarite vow and he was no longer separated from the world for God (which is what the vow was all about).

My hair is about 28 inches long right now. Long hair on guys is tricky. I'm not even sure if I can pull it off. I think I'll trim it a bit, it seemed to work better then. I know some guys who look awful with it, and some who look fantastic with it. It really just depends.

My hair is fairly long compared to other guys around my age. The longest I've ever let it go is not quite at mullet length, which it is now, I'd say (maybe 2.5-3 inches?). I like my hair - it's curly and poofy, and reminds some people of an afro and others of the "mad scientist" look. I get it cut twice a year because I don't like the feeling of hair on my face, and after 6 months of growing it out, it starts to droop down into my face more, especially when I run/move suddenly.

I have long hair. I think it can look cool, though I have no idea if mine does or not. My friends, and my ladyfriend, think it looks cool, so I guess so. I like it, and that's really all that matters.

I started growing it out in 7th grade, but then shaved my head in freshman year of high school. I haven't cut it since then, and it is now past my shoulders. It can be a pain, with washing and brushing it every day, but I really didn't like having short hair again, so I'm keeping it until I go grey or start balding.

Samson lost his strength, not because his long hair was the source of it, but because the cutting of his hair ended his Nazarite vow and he was no longer separated from the world for God (which is what the vow was all about).

OK, but why did Samson regain his strength when his hair grew back? That would suggest it was, indeed, about the hair, not the vow, which still remained broken.

Why would you want it long anyway? Hardly anybody can pull it off well, so you might as well just go for the easy way and have it short - it looks better.

Whether long hair looks good on me or if it's just in my head doesn't matter. Let's put it like this:

There was a time when I *knew* myself, and through *knowing* myself I was strong and confident, I was in balance. But what I did not *know* was that balance was a precarious one, and when I was stripped of something as trivial as my hair, the balance was lost. I soon realized that balance had been replaced by chaos, confidence by insecurity. I had lost myself.

I no longer *know* myself, and in not *knowing* myself, my existence is flawed.

Also, I absolutely, and I can't stress this enough, HATE having short hair.

I envy you guys ... My barber is a guy (he may or may not be gay, I'm not sure on that one.) and my dentist is an old hag ...

I'm sorry to say that you probably have found your opposite: I just don't like long hair on a man!!!

And I'm not THAT conservative - just a little.

I have long hair and have had it so for most of my life. To me, it represents the pre-Christian European aristrocracy, particularly the Old Low Franconian one before Clovis; I see it as an incredibly conservative even "reactionary" principle for wearing my own hair long, but no one else does, because the decade of the '60s is fresher in most peoples minds due to our degenerate cosmopolitan society than 1000s of years of culture.

Long and short hair can both looks really good on different people. It doesn't really matter, I have no preferance on guys. For myself, I like to keep it quite short.
