OK. I have had a drink and am a bit angry after a bad argument, but still this question really bugs me; how does my not believing in God offend a Christian as it apparently did tonight?

You're going to hell and the person feels sorry for you. ;)

They feel threatened - they don't want to hear any arguments that suggest that their fantasy is untrue.

Some close-minded individuals become very angry when others do not share their beliefs. If this wasn't the case, the concept of eternal hellfire would probably not exist.

i don't uderstand it either, though i find it offensive when people try and convert other people. especially if they aren't willing to be converted by the other person

This explains more about militant athiesm then Christianity. You need Hellfire to keep the troops in line, and you would need a Hell to counterbalance Heaven anyway. If Heaven is going to be a good place, you can't let everyone go there, and thus you need somewhere else to put the sinners.

This is just another sign that Christianity is a backwards religion that seeks to destroy society as we know it and return us to the good ole days of the Dark Ages, ah... The simple joys of burning jews and witches because of heresy... the Black Plague, pure bliss... the stopper on all technological progress, the true meaning of Christedom...

Thats funny, because I'd always thought that Europe was the center of Christianity during the Renaissance.

Considering that the Founders of the Renaissance were either Humanists or outright Atheists... Doesn't that tell you something?

For the most part, I believe that they were actually deists, and you still haven't addressed my comment. Why is it that Christianity, the supposed Bane of science, thrived for years along side technological renewal in Europe?

It was in the begining stages of decline, the whole Reformation/Counter-Reformation thing gave the religion a new fusion of blood but now the full effects of logic have sunk into Western Civilization people are at best only marginally religious (exceptions are of course nuts like the Southern Baptists, but in another 20-30 years they'll die out).

Christianity growth rate of converts world wide matches it's death rate, as the religion stagnates in growth forces like Islam that are growing even faster than their followers are dying (yes even with all the sucide bombings).

Point is, Christianity is a dying force and they all know it, so they want to destroy as much as possible to make everyone suffer.

Go away and take your pseudo-History and Generalizations with you.
Christianity isn't anti-Science, alot of scientific knowledge emerged from church maintained Universities.

A more fitting comment would be "If you can't handle the stupid, stay out of the LD room", but saying that would be mean.

Perhaps because you're calling into question the very foundations of their entire belief system? Ya think? :)

Most humanists were Christians and most of them Catholics as well - they just disliked the way in which the Catholic Church had deviated from the Scriptures.

as a Christian, the fact that others don't believe in God, doesn't offend me at all. I don't care to be called names like idiot, redneck, ect. I can respect someone's right to think that religion is full of crap as long as they can respect my right to believe.

what exactly did you say anyway?

btw we don't like it when people call the Bible "fairy stories" and the like, it is much better to say "I don't think the Bible is fact based" that is much less offensive.;)

But I didn't. They asked if I was Christian I said precisely "No, I am atheist". How is that offensive?

Some people don't need to you actually argue you case to take offense. They are offended that you would even believe it. Fortunately, not all people are like this.
