Instant Justice for Using Foul Language (woman pnws taxi driver) (http://khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/theuae/2005/November/theuae_November19.xml&section=theuae)

SHARJAH — Applying the principle of instant justice, Sharjah Police made a woman passenger beat a taxi driver in the streets in public for using vulgar language when she told the driver to drive safely.

The woman, Beena Soni, a Sharjah-based Jalabiah designer, was travelling with a woman relative in the taxi a few days ago. The driver applied the brakes suddenly, resulting in the women banging against the front seat.

Beena told the driver to drive carefully and not to apply brakes suddenly because it hurt them. "The driver, in turn, used vulgar words," she told Khaleej Times. She asked the driver to stop the taxi, and called the police. When the police arrived, the driver denied using vulgar words but the police did not accept it.

snip...

"I do not want to cause long-term problems to the driver, but he should actually be beaten up so that he does not use bad language again," she replied.

"Then beat him," the police said.

I would have loved to see that!:D

I think the lady should be allowed to beat the man.

However, I also think the driver should be allowed to swing back.

If you got the stones to want someone beaten, then I see no reason why that person shouldnt be allowed to defend themselves.

Its karma, really.

Hey, you don't need Sharia Law to have women beat up people in the streets...

The lack of due process doesn't bother anyone, I suppose.

"Stop! Stop, will you?! Stop that! Stop it! Now, look! No one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle! Do you understand?! Even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say 'Jehovah'."

When I was at an Airbase in Saudi-Arabia, I had a close encounter with the religious police. I was out for a run, wearing a t-shirt and shorts, when they saw me. I was chased for about half a mile by four guys with sticks, whose only purpose was to beat me. Being the healthy Marine that I was, outrunning them wasn't hard. I'm just glad they didn't have orders to shoot infidels on sight.

Before anyone starts making excuses or Sierraisms for their behavior, remember that this was a large airbase that had been in use for quite a few months by American troops. In fact, we had been invited to their country and subsequently isolated from all contact with normal Saudis.

What happened in Sharjah on September 11?
Whatever, I think that there should have been a gladiator match over the matter. Not just a two-sided beating, but the whole shebang with swords, shields, and tridents.

If the taxi driver was female and the passengers were male it wouldn't be so funny to many, would it?

Stupid double standards.

But you forget, women are "protected" from doing that sort of work in a lot of Muslim countries.

I didn't forget that, it was a hypothetical situation. Besides, I've had two female taxi drivers during my visit in Egypt and one in the United Arab Emirates.

Maybe it's just the Saudis that draw such a hard line. The woman taxi driver would probably have been stoned to death there.
