Yes, I am back, after a week of what was essentially camping out in my apartment with my girlfriend and my daughter (who has taken to referring to herself as a Katrilma victim, since she took the full force of both of these storms).
Because I like to go camping for vacation, I was in decent shape to handle the lack of electricity--propane camp stove, fluorescent lanterns, battery-powered radio, playing cards, candles, etc. Also, when we moved to Fort Lauderdale, my girlfriend was the advance scout, and wanted a place as close to our situation in San Francisco as possible--walking distance for stores and other necessities in case gas got too expensive for us--and my sweetie did us right. We wound up being about two blocks from the FEMA site for ice and water, which we made use of after about three days without power--we had to keep our beer cold, you see, and we're still on a boil water order--and groceries with limited inventory were also only about two blocks away.
We played a lot of cards, played a lot of music--acoustic guitar, flute and cello makes for a mean band--read a lot and enjoyed the cool weather. By yesterday, we were all getting a little testy because others in the neighborhood were getting their power back and we hadn't, but it still worked out okay.
And last but not least, we invented a mixed drink in honor of the occasion, called the Katrilma. It's basically made up of what we had left laying around.
Cherry juice
Ginger ale
Vodka to taste :D
Have one on me!
