well this qoute may sound good and all, but is not entirely true, civil rights movements were starting when rosa parks didnt give up her seat, if she did give up her seat something else would be the lead story of it all.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment (as I see it) of Eutrusca's post. (Which isn't something I'd say very often.)

You're going to have to explain this for me, Eutster.

I think it has something to do with Rosa Parks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_Parks), a figure head for the movement to abolish the apartheid system that the US had well into the 60s.

being from the uk you probably dont know too much about the american civil rights movement or US politics.

heres a quick some up of the rosa parks story, rosa parks a black woman sat on a bus in the front, in those days balcks were supposed to sit in the back of the bus, a white person came on the bus and demanded she moved, she said no she was tired. she gets thrown off of bus.... makes headlines, black people get outraged and it strengthens a civil rights movement.

civil rights movement was the movement that gave black people the equal opportunities of the white people, it was meant to put a stop to judging people by color of their skin(if you live in todays world you know it didnt do much of that).

anyways jump into the future secretary Rice is a black woman, what she is saying in this quote is that she would of never had the chance of having such a prestige job such as hers if it wasnt for rosa parks sitting on that bus that day.

Apartheid? Nope. Definitely not a policy of the central government applied to non-whites all over the country.

A symptom of racial hatred in certain specific regions of the US, yes. But an official Federal government policy, no.

That's got to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Segregation wasn't even close to apartheid. Under apartheid, blacks had to carry passes at all times, had no voting rights, could not go on strike, were forbidden from owning most kinds of businesses, could only live in certain areas, received an education about 1/8 the quality of whites, had almost no access to medical care, were forbidden from having sex or marrying people of other colors, etc. Segregation didn't go NEARLY as far as apartheid. Calling the U.S. system apartheid is stupid.

"I can honestly say that without people like Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here today as secretary of state." - Condoleezza Rice.

I think that would have read better.
