There was already a thread about teenagers rioting in Paris.

Gee...I thought it was only the MSU Police (http://www.msu.edu/~harri131/) were the ones that used more teargas in one night then most nations use in a year.

Shit I never heard about this. It is yet another incident to show that there is a crisis unfolding among Europe's immigrant communities.

No, the French police are more brutal, and are allowed by law to be more brutal, than any American police.

Why are they rioting? I have pretty much ignored the news for the past few days and this is the first I've heard of it.

1. Some French politician thinks the way to reduce crime is to have more police make aggressive sweeps through bad neighborhoods. Essentially, anyone who believes that spending money on more police really works should expect a reaction like this.
2. The neighborhoods in question are mostly populated by poor immigrants (or just poor people). A few kids got killed while fleeing the police. Understandably, people are upset.
3. Nice to know that the French (whose police were militarized with machineguns long before the US did the same) can screw up.

Remember the "tommy gun". I believe US police actually toned down since there heyday of the early 20th century.

Why else? They're French... they probably want an extra 22 weeks of paid Holiday, free Wine and the elimination of the English Language. :p

Most US police put those on a shelf after 1934. And records show that Thompson sold so few guns to law enforcement that his original company went bankrupt.
The French, on the other hand, happily hand out submachineguns to the police, who carry it as a standard sidearm. Nice.

Now isn't THAT interesting! I was under the impression that riots were a uniquely American phenomenon.
And they actually fired tear gas cannisters into a MOSQUE??? OMG! Could it be that France has a nascent terrorist organization? Oh, the horror! The HORROR!

Aren't US police departments issued with the MP5 in riot situations?

It's nice to know that the French can screw up.
Of course, if you've read the history of French Intelligence (the SDECE), or the DGSE as it's called now, you'll find that they screw up as badly as the CIA, and just as often.

Yes. And Topaz, and other colossal screwups.
I'm beginning to think that making a government agency committed to secret intelligence plots is a recipe for screwup. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow - but sooner or later, something really spectacularly stupid.

That confrontation at the gates of the political prison which ignited the French Revolution? Nahh. Never heard of it! :D
The riots are actually in Clichy.
Here's what happened. A few days ago, two kids believed they were being chased by the police, and got themselves electrocuted when they scaled a wall. The police has confirmed the kids had done nothing wrong (apparently they ran because they saw other kids running, also for no fathomable reason), and claims it was not chasing them, although surviving kids were adamant they were. An investigation is underway.
People are rioting to protest against those deaths, which they blame on the police.
Some French politician thinks the way to reduce crime is to have more police make aggressive sweeps through bad neighborhoods.
*nods* Nicolas Sarkozy. A nasty little populist, who happens to be Minister of the Interior in our current right-wing government - i.e., he controls the police. He makes populist speeches about bringing back order everywhere, hates the more moderate right-wing Prime Minister (Dominique de Villepin), and wants to radically change France's traditional socio-economic system if ever he becomes President.

Again?? :( :p
How would you have worded both of my mistakes, most high and mighty Fass?
Well, I would have probably worded it like "Ils n'ont pas de sens de" or "Ils n'ont aucun sens de" and would have used the proper imperative for "baiser" and made it "baise(z) mon cul" or maybe even the "dative possessive," as it's called in German, and went with "baise(z)-moi le cul."
Or maybe I would have avoided "baiser" at all, as it can also mean "fuck," giving the meaning "fuck my ass," which may not have been what you wanted, and gone with "lèche/-moi le/mon cul," meaning "lick my ass," which is what a Frenchman would say, I believe.

who could ever doubt the effectiveness of making sure that law enforcement is viewed as a hated and feared enemy by people who aren't even involved in crime, and by getting officers to likewise view the populace as despised enemies or collaborators with the enemy?

Thanks. It's easy to make fun, but more productive to let me know what i've done wrong so I don't fuck up in the future :p I was a little iffy on the first sentence, but I didn't know any better. Or maybe I did, but i'd forgotten.
Although I did know the alternate meaning of "baiser", I just wasn't sure whether you'd take it that way or not, and I didn't particularly care :p
