Any of you that havent heard of Blue Gene/L, look it up on google,
its the most powerful computer on the planet.
Its what people call a Supercomputer.
Now, imagine all that power used to play games.
Compare them to what you think is the most powerful next-gen console .
[Im not going to use names, thatll cause arguments]
One word describes it."Unbeliveable"
Do you think that games would be so realistic that they wouldnt be fun to play anymore ?
Would every game produced be '18' rated because its so realistic and so beliveable ?
Cast your opinions in on me...
[No nutters who think games are evil]

To make games truly realistic they'd have to be ray-traced (rather than polygon-scanned) graphics. Even Blue Gene/L would struggle to do real-time ray-tracing. And if you wanted all the light effects to work properly, you'd have to use 'forward' raytracing (also known as 'true' raytracing), and that requires such unbelievable amounts of processing power for anything but really simple scenes - Blue Gene/L would take years (if not decades) just to render a still image of a heap of prisms.

True, but Blue Gene is capable of it.
Years, even decades to do it, but its capable.
Remember that the computer is capable of doing more than 300 trillion calculations a second.

Blue Gene/L was not designed for gaming, consequently it won't do as well as you might think.

About chess: Every super computer I've heard of, has been used to play chess, or has been used for math.

Anyhow, I really don't like realistic games. Realisms nice, but I don't like to escape reality by being in virtual reality that is the same as real life. If games were like that, I'd rather have a time machine.

All games rated 18, no. The kind of games I like to play, yes.

I personally like R:TW, URT, MoH, CoD, HL, etc.

Children's games would be fantastic. But if we have people already claiming that GTA forced them to do crimes and kill people, imagine how it happen if games were as real as real-life. Albit, the number is few now, but over the years more and more easily influenced people are arriving, and the number will probably grow.

Its always the minority. :(

I'm sure there is a market for ever more realistic games.
Half decent virtual reality would be a nice step, just to be able to look around in a simulated world.

And you can still always play pong, if that's what you want.

Isn't it apparent I don't think games are evil, but that some people just need to not be idiots?

Sure, its the most powerful computer on the planet, and can do 300 trillion calculations a second, but still...I don't think it's made for it. Graphics have special requirements from the hardware, especially if you need realitime adjustments for movement. (And that's not something easily fixed by a few small modifications)
Of course, graphics isn't all you need. I'm sure there are some aspects of a virtual world that Blue Gene would be suited for managing.

Ugh! I hope you didn't take that as a personal insult. I sense you did, so I'll just say that read last post, first page, as to whom the "some people" are.

You asked my opinion, I gave it. I'm done here.

My apologies for the uneccessary frustration.
