Return of the Space Cowboy/Travelling WIthout Moving by Jamiroquai - both awesome albums, and all the tracks are recommended.

Hopes an Fears by Keane - perhaps not everyones cup of tea, but a brilliant album nonetheless, particularly Somewhere Only We Know

Hot Fuss by the Killers - again a fantastical album, with too many awesome tracks to pick out favourites

Absolution by Muse - same deal as Hot Fuss lol

The Best of Spandau Ballet - somewhat esoteric, but actually a surprisingly good album if you like that kinda stuff. I'd recommend Highly Strung, Gold and Through the Barricades for specific tracks

Favourite Noise by Reel Big Fish - great album, but trackwise I'd go for She's Famous Now, Snoop Dog Baby, Beer and Take On Me (an awesome cover btw - a strong contender for better than the original in my books)

Can't think of any more right now, but hopefully those'll keep you going for a while. If I think of any more I'll let you know :)

It's alright. Has a familiar vibe about it that I can't quite place. It could grow on me. :)

Sonata Artica are pretty cool. Ben Folds Five...meh. I did once rewrite "Rockin' the Suburbs" to "F---in' your mothers", while bored in an English class way back in high school though.

I can't say i'm a big Jamiroquai fan, from what i've heard so far.

Will check it out.

Keane seem okay. A bit brit-pop standard. Could grow on me like Radiohead did.

Spandau Ballet are...hmm, it's different in a way, but at the same time seems to be a bit too streamlined for my taste, if you know what i mean. I can't quite pick it, but I don't think it's my cup of tea.

I might be able to get into the Killers, though. I like "All these things that i've done", so far.

have i foisted "against me!" onto you yet?

There are worse acts to foist onto people ;)

Though a few others.

Happy Mondays: Kinky Afro, Step On are good songs to start with
Blue Oyster Cult
Fingafing: Just about any of their earlier stuff. "How To Smoke" is good. The only album I have on me is "...And The Big Red Nebula Band" which is ok, but gets a bit repetative at times.
Jurassic 5: High Fidelity, no idea why I like it, but my sister has been getting into that type of music.
Peaches: Highly recommend "Fuck the Pain Away" and "Kick It" (with Iggy Pop)
Ocean Colour Scene: Riverboat Song anf Profit in Peace (there are other ones but I am terrible with song names)
One Minute Silence.
Pitchshifter: I second PM
Primal Scream
Stiff Little Fingers have a few decent enough songs. I quite like "Bloody Sunday," "Alternative Ulster," and "Suspect device" there are a couple of better ones but I have forgotten the names :(
Violent Delight: Not everyones cup of tea, but "Parental Guidence" "Transmission" and "I Wish I Was A Girl"
Also some of the stuff Clint Mansell has done for the films Requiem for a Dream and Pi are nice to listen to.
DJ Shadow, so many tracks I like and you may have already heard of him.
Ian Dury and The Blockheads: "Reasons to be cheerful, pt.3" "Spasticus Autisticus"
Mission of Burma: "That's when I reach for my Revolver" and "Nicotine Bomb" are the two that jumb out at me.

If you want thoughtless noise (why not) try the Hives. It's not particularly inspiring, but its good if you're in a fiery (no caps lock, but correct spelling) sort of mood.

Walk Idiot Walk is my favourite by them, but music is totally subjective (I think that's the one)...

Not looking for anything in particular. I'm willing to give anything a go. I usually shy away from pop-oriented stuff, though.

What I like...eh...anything from the Dead Kennedys, to Nirvana, to the Velvet Underground, to The Doors...Public Enemy...and so on.

I can't stand pop-punk, and stuff like Snoop Dogg. Apart from that, there are no real genres that I dislike, just individual bands.

Indeed...I like We Will Become Silhouettes. One of the nicest songs I've ever heard about a nuclear holocaust.

I think I reccommended you (yes, you, Kanabia) check out Me First & the Gimme Gimmes a while back. Might've been PM though. Hmmmm. But yeah, check them out if you don't know them.
Also 65daysofstatic - link in my sig (they have a few songs streamed on the site) - if you like any of the following: post rock, math rock, dance, punk, indie, drum-led, guitar-led, electronic-glitch-led. Hell, just listen to them.
Sigur Ros - Takk is a beautiful album, as are () and Agaetis Byrjun. Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do isn't great, but it has a fantastic name.
Mogwai - Scottish post rock
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Canadian post rock. Best album is probably Lift Your Skinny Fist Like Antennas To Heaven.
Explosions in the Sky - more post rock (I like it).
Opeth - metal. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
Nile - death metal. Very good, some odd song titles.
The Fall - brilliant music, interesting vocals. And the singer's a twat because he cancelled a gig I was going to with less than 6 hours warning. But I still like them.
Tom McRae - English singer-songwriter. Plays guitar and piano. But he's fucking good.
Voodoo GlowSkulls - Mexican ska/punk. What more could you want?

Ooooh...you wanted songs as well...
Me First - Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Sloop John B., Rocketman, Heart of Glass, Strawberry Fields Forever, Nothing Compares 2 U plus much more.
65daysofstatic - my favourites are Radio Protector, Aren't We All Running? and Retreat! Retreat!, though you have to listen to more to hear all that they can do.
Sigur Ros - Svo Hljott, Glosoli and Hoppipolla are probably my favourites, all from Takk.
Mogwai - Hunted by a Freak, hands down. It's on Happy Songs for Happy People.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - there are 4 tracks on LYSFLATH, the shortest of which is 18 minutes 57 seconds. And they're mainly instrumental.
Explosions in the Sky - get The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place (it's an album)
Opeth - don't really bother with specific songs, but Still Life is a good album.
Nile - Masturbating the War God, and Chapter for Transforming Into a Snake.
The Fall - just get Hex Enduction Hour.
Tom McRae - Bloodless, Karaoke Soul, Girl Who Falls Down Stairs, Boy With The Bubblegun
Voodoo GlowSkulls - it's all good :D

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Canadian post rock. Best album is probably Lift Your Skinny Fist Like Antennas To Heaven.

Been meaning to get into them, but they're really difficult to find. I managed to track down an album, but it was $50...

Opeth - metal. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

They're alright. Instrumentally, they're good, but the vocals don't really excite me.

Nile - death metal. Very good, some odd song titles.

I've recommended a couple bands to you before, so I apologize if I repeat myself: (song titles separated by quotes)

For doom metal: Saint Vitus - "Born Too Late" or Yob - "Quantum Mystic" or Anathema - "Sleepless" (Cradle of Filth's cover will do, also) or Pentagram - "All Your Sins"
For black metal: the aforementioned Cradle of Filth - "Lustmord and Wargasm (the Licking of Carnivorous Winds)", "Malice Through the Looking Glass" or Bathory - "Woman of Dark Desires" or Venom - "Black Metal", "Welcome to Hell"
For death metal: Death - "Spirit Crusher", "Pull the Plug" or Napalm Death - "Suffer the Children", "Breed To Breathe" or Carcass - "Keep On Rotting In the Free World", "Polarised" or Amon Amarth "Bleed For Ancient Gods"
For thrash metal: Death Angel - "Bored"
For punk: AFI - "The Lost Souls", "I Wanna Get a Mohawk (But Mom Won't Let Me Get One)" or The Germs - "Forming", "Lexicon Devil" or the Plasmatics - "Butcher Baby", "A Pig is a Pig", "Tight Black Pants" or the Crucifucks - "The Mountain Song", "Oh Where Oh Where" or the Dicks - "Shit On Me", "Hate the Police" (which Mudhoney covered)
For female fronted/all or most female bands: the Gits - "Another Shot of Whiskey", "Daily Bread" (not the instrumental version), "Kings and Queens" or Jack Off Jill - "Girlscout", "Vivica", "Fear of Dying" or Concrete Blonde - "Tomorrow, Wendy", "Joey", "Heal It Up" or Rasputina - "Transylvanian Concubine" or scarling. - "Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole"
For Japanese punk that sounds like the Misfits: Balzac - "The Day the Earth Caught Fire"
For goth: Sisters of Mercy - "This Corrosion" or Switchblade Symphony: "Doll House"

That's all for now, I'll recommend more later.

OK! Now, I'm somewhat of a pretentious indie-music snob, but really, I like music that is creative and pleasing to my odd tastes. Depending on what you're looking for, I'll break up some of the better albums floating around (imo) into vague categories:

Wierd, Wonderful, & Life-Affirming:
The Most Serene Republic - Underwater Cinematographer (gloriously creative, wide-eyed Canadian band. I am currently obsessed with this album. This album is what pop would be like if the world was populated by odd folk like me)
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (beyond brilliant. If you don't know the Flaming Lips well, get it. If you do, but don't have this album, get it. If you have it, we should chat about how wonderful it is. This is the album I recommend most out of all of these: if you want to discover more music, get this album. This album! er... if you want. I'm trying not to be too pushy here...)
Architecture In Helsinki - In Case We Die (one of the best bands to ever come out of my home country, Australia. This album uses a hundred instruments you'd never expect, is childlike in parts and celebratory.)
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (an equally adored and despised album, and the quintessential 'indie' album, although I think its a masterpiece on its own merits. Best lyrics ever.)
Beck - Odelay (only ever successful blending of folk and hiphop, and is the coolest, funkiest, most insane head trip of an album)
Mr Bungle - California (Wierd, lurching and twisting, but supremely melodic album... I've got to stop giving these little commentaries, or I'll never finish this list. Only when it's necessary, then)
Brian Wilson - Smile
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun
Sigur Rós - Takk (Sigur Rós are icelandic, sing in a made-up language, and make the most beautiful music you've ever heard in your entire life.)
Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Feel The Illinoise! (a modern-day Brian Wilson. Some of the best songwriting and instrumentation... ah, just brilliant)

Rock 'n Roll ("I Wanna See Some Revolution Out There, Brothers!"):
Magneta Lane - The Constant Lover
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock 'n Roll (the best piss-taking you've ever heard ;) )
Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
The Velvet Underground - Loaded
The Hold Steady - Seperation Sunday
Ambulance LTD - [Self-Titled]
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams! [i](thunderous rock'n'roll epitomised on one night in 1969)
Weezer - "The Blue Album" [i](this album... is nerd rock taken to a level no one thought it could go. Perfect.)
The Strokes - Is This It
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Softer, Mellower, and Altogther More Chilled:
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production Of Eggs (have you ever heard a guy do heaps of whistling solos and actually be a good enough whistler to make them excellent? Andrew Bird, man!)
The Devastions - [Self-Titled]
The Devasations - Coal
Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Love - Forever Changes
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - B-Sides & Rarities
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
Shearwater - Winged Life
Spook - The Dusk Sessions
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
Tom Waits - Alice

Miscellaneous:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
Tim Fite - Gone Ain't Gone
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f#a# Infinity
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven!
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O
Lou Reed - Transformer
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Radiohead - OK Computer
Pulp - This Is Hardcore

Sorry if this is all a bit heavy, but if you want to go on a potential journey of musical discovery, every album here is, in my opinion, worth sitting down and listening to properly. Well, I hope I've helped, added my eclectic bit, and haven't been too evangelical and pushy. Have fun!

I'll check them out, but i'm not sure black metal is really my thing.

All good bands, except for Amon Amarth, who I don't know. I prefer Cathedral to Napalm Death, though.
For thrash metal: Death Angel - "Bored"

Will check them out.

All good stuff.

Don't know any of these, but i'll look them up.

OK! Now, I'm somewhat of a pretentious indie-music snob, but really, I like music that is creative and pleasing to my odd tastes. Depending on what you're looking for, I'll break up some of the better albums floating around (imo) into vague categories:

I'll check out all of them (I've heard of some, but don't know them) except for:

Beck - Odelay (only ever successful blending of folk and hiphop, and is the coolest, funkiest, most insane head trip of an album)
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
The Velvet Underground - Loaded
Weezer - "The Blue Album"
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - B-Sides & Rarities
Radiohead - OK Computer

...because I already like all of these, and own most of them. (and if I don't, they're on the list.)

And Neutral Milk Hotel sounds familiar somehow...hmm...

Sorry if this is all a bit heavy, but if you want to go on a potential journey of musical discovery, every album here is, in my opinion, worth sitting down and listening to properly. Well, I hope I've helped, added my eclectic bit, and haven't been too evangelical and pushy. Have fun!

No, that's great. Thanks. :D

I've tried in the past to check out ska...from the Aquabats to Goldfinger...etc...it doesn't really do it for me. At best, I can tolerate it - I don't mind Reel Big Fish for example; but I can't seem to enjoy it as much as I do a lot of other music.
You'd enjoy it more if you skanked, I'm sure. Nothing like a good skanking :p

The Devasations - Coal

The Devastations? Australian three-piece band in the vein of Nick Cave's stripped down late 50s swamp/desert rock? Did sound for them last year. Good band and pleasent chaps.

I certainly shall, Grampus. After all, a guy who did sound for the ever-brilliant Devastations commands complete respect from me. Their brand of Nick Cave ballads with an occasional Turkish feel was my best friend when my girlfriend broke up with me a couple of weeks ago. Good to know they're pleasant fellows.:)

The Blaggers are still in my bad books from when they pledged unconditional support for the IRA in the early nineties. Twats.
I never knew that. What on Earth brought that on? Judging by their lyrics & general behaviour back then, I have a hard time picturing them supporting the IRA. Care to fill me in or hit me with a link or something? Much appreciated.

If you're into early 80's light electropop, try Depeche Mode.
If you're into late 80's/early 90s gothic electropop with rock elements, try Depeche Mode.
If you're into mid 90's to present day lackluster electropop with a heavy slant, try Depeche Mode. :D

Close, thats the name of one of his albums, "Deltron 3030." Good stuff if you like rap/hip-hop thats above the usual, "PIMP SHIT HOES BLING BLING WEED CADDILAC CAR" stuff.

And Iced Earth is good for that melodic operatic style of metal. Not my favorite genre, but I tried to include something for anybody's taste.

That's exactly it, then. I remember that exact song being played on radio a year or two ago, and I thought it was awesome. I could never find it online or in stores though...makes sense if I thought he was "Deltron" rather than "Del tha Funkee Homosapien"

We seem to have fairly similar music taste, which is cool. :)

You might like Corporate Avenger if you like that...it's a bit gimmicky and overly-political sometimes, but try the songs "Voting Doesn't Work" and "Jesus Christ Homosexual" (for a laugh)

Aha! I knew I'd forgotten someone - if you fancy a lil prog rock then I highly recommend:

Genesis. Almost anything really, they're awesome, but if I were o pick out a few favourites I'd go for I Can't Dance, Dreaming While You Sleep, That's All, Driving The Last Spike (look out, its a long one) and Home By The Sea... oooh and if you can track it down Drum Duet from the live album - 6 minutes of crazy drum awesomeness.

Peter Gabriel (yeah I know he was in Genesis, but his stuff after he left is better) and here I'm thinking Mercy Street, Sledgehammer, Here Comes The Flood, San Jacinto, Big Time and Family Snapshot.

And if you're not thinking quite so prog rock a good band that springs to mind is System Of A Down. Album wise I'd say Toxicity, and tracks-within-said-album-wise I'd say Toxicity, Chop Suey, Aerials, Atwa...think that's all the really awesome ones.

Country rock: Jello Biafra with Mojo Nixon - "Will the Fetus Be Aborted?" or Wilco - "I Must Be High", "Forget the Flowers" or Cracker - "I See the Light"
Other Wilco songs that aren't country rock: "Outtasite (Outta Mind)," "Misunderstood", "Shouldn't Be Ashamed"
Other Cracker songs that aren't country rock: "I Hate My Generation", "Low", Don't Fuck Me Up (With Peace and Love)"

"Alternative": Sebadoh - "Careful", "Soul and Fire", "Ocean" or Local H - "Bound For the Floor", "Creature Comforted", "Sports Bar" or Therapy? - "Screamager", "Disgracelands", "Lonely, Cryin' Only" or Veruca Salt "Seether", "Volcano Girls", "Used To Know Her"

Yay! Delicious mentions of Therapy?, Veruca Salt AND Cracker... and a mention of Stigmata (although, corporate whore that I am, I prefer So What)...

Never thought I would hear you bringing up some of Wilco's pop songs.

Good choices, but off of Being There, you should have gone with "Far, Far Away" and "Red Eyed and Blue".

Quite possibly the worst music to have on while you're having sex.

I also recommend Iced Earth, Dream Theater, and Ayreon. Cool bands.

Get the new System of a Down album. Don't know when it's out in Oz, but it comes out Monday over here, and it's fucking good. Better than Mesmerize. Probably not so good as Toxicity or their debut though (I've only listened to it a couple of times). In fact, certainly not as good as their debut.

I do have to agree that their stuff was raw, dirty, and energetic. The problem was, in my mind, that everything else at the time was also raw, dirty, and energetic. I liked the Machine Gun Etiquette album because it was original, they developed their own sound with that album. Perhaps saying their earlier stuff was shite was a bit harsh, though.
