Why is it still socially acceptable to smoke cigars but not cigarettes

Just wondering.
The idea of a cigar is almost sonomous with high class and luxurious living. On the other hand smoking ciggs is seen as dirty and disgusting, even though the smell of the cigar lasts longer on clothing and breath and is worse.

Depends the type of cigarettes. Cigars are assoicated with high class exclusive men. Cigarettes are more gender and class mutual, until you get into specifics. For example, I smoke Peter Stuyvesant's and look all together cool. Where as a person smoking White Oxe rollies looks like an ex-con.

Its just a wierd class distinction thing to me. I don't see the point of smoking cigars, except for victory on certain things - like graduation. Normall, I will smoke Camel Filters or Nat Sherman New York Cuts (very classy ciggs).
I just see the stigmata of "oooohhhhh ewwww. . .. smoker." When I light up a cigg but no one questions a cigar at all.

True. Considering cigars are dirtier (at least to me) and are effectively a dozen cigarettes strapped together.
I think it comes down to price and pop culture. Make anything delcared in popculture and charge a fortune for it and becomes glamourus in the eyes of the general public. Like caviar.

In my circle, the most elitist thing you can smoke is a Lucky Strike. Or these really sweet clove cigs that are imported from France, but they don't count. Why is it that the "trashy" cigarettes are revered?
'Cause that's what the cool kids smoke. Suck down some cancer and don't freakin' argue.
Besides, cigars smell like butt. I can deal with kissing a cigarette smoker, and don't even think twice about the smell of pot....but when my boyfriend smokes cigars, he maintains a WIDE personal space, because he knows the consequences.
Edit: I smoke Turkish Gold or Royal (Camel) if not LS

Cigars come across as an indulgant, and very occasional pleasure, which isn't as frowned upon. If you're smoking cigarettes its seen as more of a permanant, habitual flaw in you charachter.

Next thing you're gonna tell me is that beastiality is a character flaw and pedophilia is morally wrong.
Why's everyone looking at me like that?

Agree totally. You're smoking cigarettes cause you're addicted, and people shouldn't be addicted to stuff. On the other hand, you're smoking a cigar because you want to, but you don't have to.
I don't agree with it (addictions come in all shapes and sizes), but I think that's answers the original question.

That's ridiculous. I do cocaine because I'm addicted. I blow more than my yearly income on booze, hookers and gambling because I'm addicted. I shot a man in the face for a hit of meth because I'm addicted. I smoke a cigarette because I've had a bad day and it's been four or five since I've last had one, and damn it I like the buzz.
Note: all but first and last sentences are abso-friggin-lutely fictionalized to prove a point. The rest (ie the first and last sentence) are the truth to sweeten the deal.

I'm not addicted to cigarettes. I only smoke on weekends and only if I'm going out and drinking. So why is my occasional indulgence any different?

I'm in a very similar boat (I don't drink, so it's only a few nights a week when I feel like smoking), though I usually smoke three to five a night (roughly a four to five hour period), and I can't think of very many people at all who don't still make comments about addiction.
I think it's that tidbit about cigarettes and cocaine being equally as hard to quit. Is that even true? 'Cause I've quit coke before and lived through it, I don't imagine cigarettes could be that hard.

You know what? it's about time smoker's took a stand. We're one of the few groups it's ok to pick on. I almost always avoid smokeing around other people, unless they're smoking too. I don't smoke in places where it could harm others. So why should I have to put up with these waves of social self rightousness! We may not be a perfect lobby group, but neither is the SUV Owners Club and politicians learn not to mess with them.
Plus we can so get backing from the tobacco lobbies :D.

haha :fluffle:
anyway, cigarettes are cheap and relatively similar across all levels of quality (atleast as far as the major brands go). Cigars, for good ones, are expensive and therefore seen as something reserved for important occasions (first child, wedding, graduation, etc.) It really just comes down to cigarettes being more wide spread

Let's raise a big, smokey militia. Who's gonna see it coming? NOBODY! I mean, except everybody here. But I'll coerce them into shutting up if need be.
We'll take the legislators by storm! And with all the smoking some of the ranks will surely be engaging in, they won't even see it coming! It'll be like guerilla warfare, tobacco-style. Yeeeah.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. I was reading some stuff on smoking today and discover that apparently 50% of the smoke stays in your lungs. Seems reasonable. Many a time I've inhaled, started to do something else and when I got to exhale, nothing comes out...
Back to the point. We'd be a lean, mean fighting machine... except for stopping every five minutes for a smoke break...

look at it this way...the smoke just kills the weak lung cells so the strong ones can thrive and reproduce. It's basic evolution;)

I have some now and then. I've had Iranian Osetra caviar, and liked it very much, then again, I like salty things a lot. I've never had Beluga caviar before though, its just insanely expensive.
Now, about cigarettes, I notice that smoking extraordinarily expensive brands of cigarettes tends to make people seem less pissy about what your doing. I smoke Dunhills, and nobody seems to mind it.

I smoke cigars and think that there is a difference from the cigarette smokers. It still is a status symbol in my eyes. Where I usually smoke is in a cigar lounge in a nice restuarant in the business section of the city. The reason there is becuase of the contacts that you meet. I took it up along with a business associate to make new business friends. It has worked out well and have learned alot about cigars and whats the good ones vs the cheapo's. When in a cigar lounge I find people are alot more friendly and open. I think its like sharing a hobby with others. Makes for good talk and sometimes opens the door for a business contact. So I continue to go down there 1-2 a week. By the way I do agree with the strong smell. But a good cigar wont destroy your clothes like a cheap one.

On the other hand it's amazing the fully random (and sometimes benificial) contacts you can make having a cigarette, anywhere.
To be quite honest, I've never smoked a cigar and don't plan to. My body has enough to deals with when It's run by a man with a lust for martinis and is both a member a minority share holder in the Wine Society of Australia (insane supply of wine and all).

Because cigarettes smell of shit, while cigars don't. Seriously, cigarettes are made out of tobacco that would never be used for cigars.
Also, mentally ill people smoke cigarettes, because they are more prone to addiction. Cigars aren't typically an addiction for anyone.

I actually wrote a sociology paper on the social benefits of smoking in high school. No matter what you smoke, you will make friends. You share something already, so what is to stop you from talking? Plus, those 5-7 minute cig breaks are a great time to discuss anything. Esp. where I am, there is alot of potential that all of these random people could end up being important down the road

1) I refuse to use Google as my source of information. No rational person would use it.
2) Cigars create more smoke, ergo, more smell. Cigarettes stink, cigars stink worse.
3) I don't know what budget cigarettes you're buying, but that's not the case. If you compare a cheap cigarette with an expencive cigar, of course there's a quality difference. The same as if you compared and expencive cigarette with a cheap cigar.
4) Uh huh. When you grow up and stop resorting to childess retorts you can come back and play with the big kids.
5) The only reason there are more people addicted to cigarettes then cigars is because more people smoke them more of the time. When was the last time you heard of someones smoking a box of cigars a day?
6) Not typically, however if consumed to the same level as cigarettes typically are by addicts then they stand a higher chance of causing addiction and may cause more damage then cigarettes of similar tar and nicotine ratios.

ha...just look at Freud. The man constantly smoked cigars (the irony of him having a theory so full of phallic symbols is amazing). Nicotine is addictive no matter what. the way it is rolled means nothing. Most people smoke Marbs. That doesn't mean salems are less addictive, just less popular.

They both smell horrible. I've met more people addicted to cigarettes than to cigars, though (I've never met anyone who smoked cigars without there being some special occasion). Of course, I know that some people do smoke cigars out of addiction, just not as many. Both trigger an allergic reaction for me (I don't mean like, just caughing, I mean like my throat gets enflamed to the point I can barely breath/talk and life just generally sucks), so unfortunately it often seems like a personal affront against me (even though, obviously it's not).
Also, there must be some big geographical different, because the only kind of friends you would make by smoking at my high school were people who were also into marijuana, cocaine, meth, etc. So when I see someone light up, I think "drug addict." From the circle I hung out with, you might have been ostracized for starting. It's like, irrationally a sign of weakness to me. I guess it's just the way I've been socialized. Of course, I do live in CA, which is the most anti-smoking part of the US. I really don't understand why anybody starts smoking anymore, we all know how bad it is for us. Whatever, people have a right to destroy their own bodies, as long as they're not harming me.
I don't know what all this about "nice cigarettes" is, they all smell the same to me.
It all basically comes down to how smoking a cigar is protrayed in the media and, as someone mentioned earlier, pop culture. Smoking a cigar is still seen as a sort of status symbol. It's almost like we (men) are expected to at least be able to smoke a cigar, maybe it's a testament to our masculinity (I am purposely going to avoid the whole Clinton thing). I've been an athlete my whole life and because I know what smoking does to my body I have never been tempted to smoke cigarettes, cigars are another matter. I have managed to convince myself that even one cigarette would negatively affect my athletic performance, but a cigar doesn't "seem" as bad.
To me the real question is "what is the difference between someone who smokes a cigar and someone who smokes a pipe?" What I mean by that is what is the difference in the connotation. Personally I like the smell of pipe smoke, but that may be because every time I went to visit one of my uncles he had a pipe going. In the order of what I personally am more likely to smoke (if I was going to) would be a pipe, then a cigar, and if I had to a cigarette.
It's a class thing in my mind...and I think George Carlin summed it up quite well.
Haven't we had about enough of this cigar smoking shit in this country? When is this going to end? When is this shit going to go away? When are these fat, arrogant, overpaid, overfed, over privileged, overindulged white collar business criminal asshole cocksuckers gonna put out their cigars and move on to their next abomination? White pussy businessmen sucking on a big brown dick! That's all it is, that's all it ever was, a big brown dick. Sigmund Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Oh yeah, well, sometimes it's a big brown dick! With a fat, arrogant, white collar business criminal asshole sucking on the wet end of it. But, hey, the news is not all bad for me, you want to know the good part? Cancer of the mouth! Good, fuck 'em, it makes me happy, it's an attractive disease, goes great with a CELL PHONE! So, light up, suspender man, and suck that smoke deep into your empty suit and blow it out your ass, you fuckin' cocksucker!

What's odd, is that I hate the smell of cigarettes while they're being smoked (obviously associate it with barely being able to breath due to an allergic reaction), I actually kinda like the way a car smells if cigarettes were smoked in it quite a while ago. I guess it reminds me of how the company trucks at my dad's old work smelled when i was a little kid.
