i thought that there might be some one on here that could explain this to me.
Why do most computers have only 2 USB ports?
any one know?

mine has 4

besides, usb can be hubbed, so you don't really need any more than 1 in theory ;)

Because they're old?

Newer computers (dell especially) usually have 2 on the front and more than that on the back. One I purchased myself had 4 on the front and 8 on the back. It's just based on what you pay for.

But an unpowered hub can die easily from having too many power-dependent devices attached.

Your computers old. The popularity of USB based plugs has increased so much in newer years that most computer will have at least six. Mine has 8 at the back and 4 at the front and I still need to unplug things every now and then.

Every year or two they get two new USB ports. Your computers are old.

Powered hubs are expensive. You're better off buying a computer with more ports than you'll ever need.

I'll see your dell and your compaq and raise you a custom-built one.
Dells are trash. I'm on one right now, because it's the only internet-capable PC in the house. When I get internet acess in my room, I will ditch this piece of trash.

It has penis envy because it has less holes? Vaginal envy, perchance?

Pu-lease. I have better things to do with my time then build a computer. I'd probally have a better apartment if I built one, but I do't have the time or patience to learn how and execute. I could build myself a car or make my own lunch or perform my own surgery... but none of those sound like attractive options.

But then you are putting them on a single collision domain

Its like having and eithernet hub vs switch

Except that computers come in more complete pre-fabed parts

It is esentialy an excersize in pluging things in

Take you bout an hr or two the first time to put it all togeather

The real tricky part is ordering all the right parts

Bus-powered ... 15 bucks
I think might be saving some money using one of thoes instead of a whole new computer

its not the ideal situation but you got to make a call if the money is worth it

In that case, my computer is technically custom. Given I ordered a Compac shell a specified what parts for the tech guy to put in it. Which is a good thing, because I can't be trusted.

Technicaly every computer could be considered as such

Problem being you are stuck with their range of options

They almost always skimp on MOBO features

I am all for baught computers for thoes that dont need many options but I use everything I got ... and preffer to spend a fraction of the money to get thoes features

Take a test

It is ment to certify the equivelent of 2 years as a pc repair or helpdesk experience

In all honestly while I got mine it has been the least usefull of my certifications

I have my CCNA and two MCSE's

Thoes have come in WAY more handy

I better get my pepper spray handy.

Anyways right now I am on a three year old HP Pavillion. It has four USB 1.1 ports. I hate how Windows always tells me my devices would work faster if I plugged them into a USB 2.0 port.

I have six...
My other computer (not allowed on it) has 6, and it's 5 years old.

Mine's a pretty cheap motherboard from this year, though. I think 6 is about standard for a new PC now.

I don't understand what one needs with 6 usb ports. I have four and one is unused right now. I guess I may not feel the need because I can click the iTunes icon, plug in my iPod, walk to McDonalds, overthrow the Canadian goverment and have a quick nap before iTunes will have loaded.

The only instance in which I really found them useful was using a joystick, throttle, rudder pedals (Joystick is mine, but i borrowed the others), and headset all at once while playing a flight sim. My mouse is also USB, so i still had one slot spare.

I also have a usb mouse, and a PS/2 mouse. The usb mouse is much better (its a trackball). I only use all four of my usb ports when I plug in my iPod. All I really need though is 2 ports (1 is used to connect to the net).

Yeah. I could see myself needing more if I got a USB keyboard and a USB router, but for now, six is more than ample for my needs.

Oh yes, that's USB 2.0 ports.

Using 2 - external USB hard drive and scanner. I use PS/2 for the mouse as PS/2 is useless for anything else apart from keyboards.

See people like me who have a tendency to use 2 thumb drives mouse keyboard joystick and an external hard drive at the same time (to start with) tend to need lots of those ports (specialy when using digital cam and such)

Lucky my board has 16

I still have a tendency to use a powered hub though ... not for the ports but when I get a long usb cable it puts the ports within easy reach

You just have to watch that you dont put multi pull devices that you use in tandem often

My 3year old PC has 6 (plus 2 firewire which i never use...)
Used for my mouse, printer, scanner, joystick, Bluetooth dongle (until SP2 killed it i juts use it as a cool flashing light now), 2 digital cameras, my mobile phone and occasionally a old zip250 drive.

I'm lazy and can't be arsed going roudn the back all the time so i use a powered hub for the cameras and my phone.

I did my CCNA in highschool
My MCSE's were much harder though

I would look at CCNA (IE cisco's certification)

Or a++

And the A++ is not bad specialy when you are that young ... it can help with early jobs just wont be as good in the long run
