Looking at the Drake equation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_Equation) again, I thought we'll hear what you think First Contact will involve.
Do you expect the first class of extraterrestrials who comes into contact with humans will be malevolent, benevolent or indifferent?
They've already come into contact with us and I've got a giant asshole to prove it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may be too sardonic for a proper response, but I believe that our first contact will be with extraterrestrials too far away for their opinion to really matter, at least for another thousand years or so.

Such events would in all likely-hood present an out-side context problem.
Furthermore, as the Universe is so vast, objects can only travel at the speed of light, faster then light travel is a fantasy (a fun one but still a fantasy), and the Earth becoming invisable from space due to fiber obtic cable.... The human race while it remains restricted to mere planet Earth will never encounter alien life. So at present there is an indifference not just over the morality of alien civilizations, but indifference over whether they exist at all. From the current Human prespective they might as well not exist.

Well, if life exists there are few possibilities..
One is that the life is primitive and not even developed to our stage. Two is they have developed to our stage or further and have destroyed themselves. three is they may be stuck in limbo between mass destruction and enlightenment much as ourselves. Four is all advanced life on the planet has come together and extinguished xenophobia, jingoism and all other major faults and have progressed farther in the sciences than we have. If any of these are true, we will still never see extraterrestrial life except by accident. Either they destroyed themselves so they can't reach us, arn't advanced enough, or are so advanced they know not to associate with us.
objects can only travel at the speed of light, faster then light travel is a fantasy (a fun one but still a fantasy),
As far as our sciences know. Our sciences have "mathematical proof" half made up on the spot to support the more advanced sciences.

They probably wouldn't be malevolent, unless you believe that there is something on earth that they would actually want.
They will be, in all likelihood, quintessentially alien, plunging inscrutably recurved teeth through the pliant flesh of our contentions.

Of course there will be things on earth they'll want! Animals, crafts, technologies they never happened to discover, slaves, books and information, and probably many natural resources.
I think there is a certain level of intelligence that among civilized beings will be about constant, because once you have civilization at a certain level evolutionary forces that increrase intelligence become impotent. Of course they may have had genetic engineering for thousands of years and so may be far ahead of us intellectually.
They will either try to start peaceful trade with us to open up our markets, or go colonial style and conquer us to open up our markets and take valuable goods.
I don't see them exterminating us, but they might enslave us, even if they go the peaceful route, we might end up selling humans as slaves to them.

I think they will be curious.

I believe firmly that the first indication of contact with an extraterrestrial starfaring intelligence will be the destruction of the humans.

Chances are if they learned to live with themselves they wouldn't want a fight.
But, if they do I'll take'em all on!!!!!!! :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5: :mp5:

if aliens exist i doubt they'd be developed enough to reach earth.... Plus space is so infinitely BIG, i don't actually believe interstellar travel is possible, humans will never achieve it... we don't have the resources, the time, the money, the technology or the unity, this planet has too many problems of its own.
I think they will be curious.
Frankly, I doubt they'll be able to experience anything analogous to human curiosity.

Your logic seems flawed. Just because we are seemingly incapable of global harmony does not mean all inteligent life would be.
