On Thursday, November 17 at 8:00 PM, the Discovery Channel will run a special program called "Red and Blue." Two families will swap places, one from a "Blue" state and one from a "Red" state. The two towns are Topanga, California and Clinton, Louisiana. The two families have very different political inclinations.

This should be very interesting! :D

I haven't seen any promos for it yet. Did they pick a family of stereotypical California new age granola munching freaks and a stereotypical redneck cracker Klan?

RD already interviewed the Familys who did it. According to the Families it's not going to be that big of a change for each one. No there won't be a huge killing between the the two groups. Sorry to burst your bubble.

What I read led me to believe that the most divisive issue will be abortion.

I doubt that any of them are planning on having kids during the show. And who brings of Abortian in regular conversations? No one really except for the the extremists.

Cool. I'm always up for watching free-to-air porno. ;)

(well, OK, the discovery channel isn't free-to-air, but I have it anyway. :p)

So it would be like Trading Spouses except more boring and obsessed with politics?

more interesting would be a bush voting fox watching family swapping with someone from Iraq Iran etc etc

That would be really awesome.

It wouldn't have to be a "bush voting fox watching family", but if they just got a random volunteer family from a western country (regardless of politics) to do so and document the culture shock ('course, Iraq/Iran is probably too dangerous, but somewhere like Turkey or Egypt would be good), that is a brilliant idea. In fact, it's such a good idea, that I suspect someone has tried it before. :p

You're talking about reality TV. By its very nature, brilliant ideas are shunned. Although that would make a good program/series.

Well, I can't see it becoming a hit peak-time show, but yes, it would certainly be an entertaining documentary series.

They should get an uber capitalist, like Melkor, and an ultra-Trot like DHomme. That would be interested.

Pfft - they've done several series of these kind of things on the BBC already called "Trading places", with swaps like a Tory MP living on a gypsy camp and an northen Old Labour working class bloke living with a trendy New Labour MP from London.

Well, this thread reminded me to watch the new Red vs. Blue, but you can keep your reality TV shit, tkank you. Especially since “Red” America really isn’t all that different from “Blue” America.

We could swap political groups and arguments for a while. Soon I'd be a billionaire with a mansion and Melkor would be hanging out in squats. Sexcellent.

So do I, but this isn't anything like most of what I have come to think of as "reality TV." I just read about it and thought it would be interesting to see the differences and the reactions to them. :)
