Why Nietzsche went crazy

"To acquire mind one must need mind--one loses it when one no longer needs it." -- Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

So...if one doesn't need one's mind, one loses it. The evidence for not needing one's mind is not using it. Nietzsche published Twilight in 1888. In 1889, he went crazy and spent his last ten years of life in a catatonic-like state. Could it be because most of what he writes in Twilight seems to be mindless thumbing-of-the-nose at the establishment?

I thought he liked the Establishment's goals (power, control, etc.) but believed they lacked balls and were too soft. I always heard that he went crazy due to syphilis or something.

It was either that, or excessive mental masturbation.

He certainly died of syphilis, and that doesn't do a lot for your mind, it's true.

He was a very sickly man and constantly suffering - would probably at least make him more likely to go mad.

As much as I hate Nietzche's philosophy, I can't help feeling sorry for him. He had a tough life. Especially since he's being associated with Nazism when really that was his sisters doing - he wasn't anti semitic himself.

I recall reading that during the final years of his life, despite being unable to carry on a conversation or communicate to any degree, he became a masterful piano player.

If his fingering was masterful, maybe Sierra is onto something, here.

You know why he went crazy?

He couldn't deal with so many people pronouncing his name wrong!

Hahahaha.

Take heed kids; not only will it make you go blind, but you'll get holes in your brain and drool all day. But you'll be good at the piano.

Heh, yeah.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone did a study of the professions with the biggest proportion of mental illness and musicians came out somewhere on top. I know a guy who is a guitar genius, but I have suspicions that he's schizophrenic, or something.

I think psychiatrists do quite well for that.
Bringing your work home, presumably.

Yeah.

Mortuary workers are probably up there. Lighthouse watchmen...hmm...

Sex shop workers...

You could make a pretty interesting list.

It'd be worth reading, I'd imagine.
Why sex shop workers, particularly?

Nietzsche went crazy because somebody kept filling his socks with custard. :p

I can assure you that that wasn't custard. It may have looked like custard after being left out in the sun for several hours, but it was not.

Interestingly enough, my Western Civ TA, the one for whom I'm studying Twilight, informed us today that Stephen Hawking's wife leaves him out in the sun with his chair unplugged when he doesn't do what she wants. I don't know the validity of that, and my TA's kinda crazy, but I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when he said that.

Yeah, i've heard about that before.

Google it, it seems she's also pissed off about him appearing on the Simpsons. I wonder if he got pushed down a flight of stairs for that. *winces*

Exactly.. Far too obsessed with power.

Letila, I suggest that you pick up something by Nietzsche and read it. It's quite obvious that you've never done so.
