George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community

I've been an original ST fan for decades, and this is the first I've ever heard of it...

Likewise, I'm a fan, and I didn't know (then again, I only "discovered" ST about 3-4 years ago). It doesn't change my opinion of George, though. He's still a top-notch actor and an all-around great guy. I think he should be applauded for having the courage to speak up.

Sulu? Gay? Say it isn't so! Well, at least Richard Simmons is still straight.

Considering he was one of the most camp individuals in one of the most camp TV shows of the 60s, I can't say I'm surprised.

i find it very sad that george takei felt he had to wait this long before coming out. is his standing with the star trek community so important to him (and so fragile) that he couldnt have done this 20 years ago?

Maybe he talks about that in the article... anyway, he looks pretty happy in the photo.

I honestly thought he wasn't in the closet. I didn't think there was a big enough closet, or a point to him staying in it as I would imagine that Star Trek fans are pretty accepting. But then, that's a flaw in my reasoning that Takei's life involves nothing but Star Trek and it's fans.

I don't neccisarily have a discusion, maybe to welcome him out I guess, for whatever weight that has from some straight dude he'll never meet. But there it is.

Really, why is it still a big deal that there are homosexuals in the world? Why are there so many people in the world who think that someone else's sexuality is their business? On the other hand, why do so many people think their own sexuality is anyone else's business? When can we leave this stupid crap behind and just accept differences for what they are, and concentrate on solving the real problems of the world?

I had a teacher who met Sulu and had a really funny story to tell about it. In summary, the story proved he was gay. I heard the story a year ago. If you want to hear, I will try to tell it as best as I impossibly can.

Maybe social conservatives (read: nutjobs like Falwell) will demand that old episodes of Star Trek be taken off the air because Takei's homosexuality will permeate through the television set and rot our childrens' brains. Oh, the horror!
