The NS General film thread

Ok, the idea for this thread is for you to tell the world...or at least that part of the world that uses this forum...what you've seen at the cinema recently. Not what you've seen on tv, or you've bought the dvd or whatever - what you've actually paid good money to see in a theatre full of idiots talking and eating popcorn loudly. Ahem.
Anyway...in the last week, I've seen Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit; Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride; and Serenity.
W&G is a great film, can't reccommend it enough :D
Corpse Bride is good, especially if you like Tim Burton's other stuff (which I do), but you'll be able to see where it's going after about 10 minutes.
Serenity is good fun, some great lines, though the plot doesn't really get sorted out until two-thirds of the way through. Worth seeing.

In general I don't have time to go to the movies. :( so I guess I can't help much, the last actual movie that I went to see, was a sneak preview for The Island. It sucked, too predictable. (most movies are though.) I stick to netflix that way I can watch when I have time to (like at 2am) I think the next movie that I will go see in the theater will probably be when the new Superman movie comes out. (I only go when there is a real point to seeing it on the big screen and Superman is that type of movie)

Totally agree with you on Wallace & Gromit. Great movie.
Went to see 'The Myth' a couple of weeks ago. It's a new Chinese-language movie with Jackie Chan in it. Attempts to be a new 'Crouching tiger' type movie, but fails miserably.
In it, Jackie (named Jack, which maybe indicates how much effort was put into the script) is a present-day archealogist who has vivid dreams of being a general protecting a beautiful princess several hundred years ago. His best friend is a scientist and talks him into searching for a mysterious rock that repels gravity that is mentioned in a text from the same time as Jack's dream. blah blah blah. Yes he finds it's all true.
Jackie is just too old and funny looking to be a romantic lead in a movie. His fight scenes are few and far between (though good when they happen), which is perhaps understandable given his age. Finally it had some real bad editing. The climax of the movie was at a waterfall, y'know the one Jack dreamt about then told his best friend who researched it and found the exact waterfall deep in China. Only he didn't. That bit had been cut from the movie.
Great bit of editing. Cut the important bit that leads us to the big climax.
As bad as the editing in 'The Brothers Grimm'. The bit when they first go into the forest and are all seperated. Girl, all alone, sees her father (kinda of). Suddenly they're all together again outside hiding behind a haybale and yelling at the girl she can't go in to rescue her father. Next scene they're in a dungeon miles away being tortured.
Wonderful, simply wonderful editing there.
(And yes, I know you can work out what happened inbetween, but that still doesn't make up for such lousy editing)

The Proposition. A top film written by Nick Cave (of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds). It's an Australian film, sort of the equivalent of a western. I highly recommend it.

Not heard of The Myth...don't think I'll bother.
Saw a poster for The Brothers Grimm...saw it had Matt Damon and Heath Ledger in it...thought 'No.'

Serenity: I absolutely loved Serenity (And proceeded to drag 6 people with me to see it a second time), I think it is the movie that Star Wars wishes it could have been. But I'm a Firefly fan so slightly prejudiced.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: Would be the best film I've seen this year if I wasn't a Firefly geek. Go see it. Everyone. That means you.
Flightplan: Eh... it was ok, I didn't see the twist coming which was nice, Jodie did a good job as always, but it was slow moving and I was not happy with the resolution.

Yeah that actor coupling turned me off it. I only went along 'cause it was a Terry Gilliam movie. But it wasn't really worth the ticket price. It's a 'If you've got nothing better to do on a wet cold weekend and you see it at the vid store for $2 for a week then it's not bad' type movie.

Thought I'd try a bit of CPR...
Ok, since my last post here, I've seen Lord of War (with Nicholas Cage) - very good, not for everyone I don't think, but see it if you get the chance. It's the story of an arms dealer told from his own perspective, with a kinda moral leaning.
Also, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr.) - bloody excellent. If you like detective stories, comedies, or just good films, go see it. Plus Kilmer and Downey Jr. kiss. What more could you want?
And Saw 2 - just as good as the last one (ie. not very), except it does tie in nicely (if in a somewhat contrived manner) to the first one, and the storyline is better written. It's as if they put some thought into this one.

Seriously? I heard it was pretty deep.
just back from Harry Potter
good points- its finally caught up maturity wise with the books
bad points- so much from the book is missing, house elves, bagman etc plot doesnt quite tie in too well

The Constant Gardener. Really good film. I'd advise you to go and see it- kinda tugs at ye ol' heart strings just enough.
Ralph Fiennes is stiff and awkward...perfect for the role of a British diplomat abroad as he slowly gets drawn into a conspiracy that got his wife (Rachel Weisz) killed in Kenya.
Again, good cast, good acting and the scenes on-location in Kenya resonate the poverty and yet beauty of the land.
