I'm curious to know the general impression of my current state of residence.

If you live here, do you like it?

If you've visited here, what cities did you go to, and what was your impression?

If you've never been here, what are some of your preconcieved notions about this state...that is if you've ever heard of it before! :p

I think most people know moe about Canda than Wisconsin (and that's not saying much). Most of what I "know" comes from watching That 70's Show (not saying much either).

I think I might find it on a map, but otherwise I don't know a thing about it.

I saw "Wisconsin" and I thought cheese, then I thought "this ought to be a weird topic" and you dashed my hopes upon the rocks of despair. Damn you, damn Wisconsin and damn the Wright Brothers.

Yep, that's the only thing I can think of about Wisconsin. Sorry.

I know of a NSer from WI, but she left. :p

As for anything else...I know nothing about the state except where it is and what its capital city is called (wait, Wisconsin was the one with St. Paul, wasn't it? ;) no j/k).

Gah...I've never watched the show enough to know whether it's anywhere near an accurate representation. :p

I think I might find it on a map, but otherwise I don't know a thing about it.

Find Chicago on the map...then look to the north...I know you'll find it. ;)

Lots of German and Polish immigrants settled here, along with some Dutch.

We're good at making beer (subjectively, I know...all American beer is shit...yadda yadda...you should try our local stuff! :D )

Farming is big, of course...that's fairly well known. Although the eastern half of the state has exploded in urban population in the last two decades.

There is a thriving paper industry, especially in the northeast.

University of Wisconsin at Madison is home to one of the largest medical schools in the nation.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head...and now you know, and knowing is half the battle! :p

I know of a NSer from WI, but she left. There's a few of us floating around out there. I know Free Soviets is from Wisconsin, not to far from me actually, maybe an hour drive.

But that might be who you're talking about, since I have no idea if Free Soviets is a he or a she.

Wisconsin: Politically screwed up, not to the extent that Illinois is, but close. This means two cities (as opposed to one in Illinois) control the general political climate, alienating and disenfranchising (yay! buzzwords!) the rest of the state.

It's all about control here and taxes for a LOT of programs.

I want out SOOOO bad. Luckily, I'll be taking off for NC sometime next year!

when I think of wisconsin, I think of rural dairy farms. sorry but it is true. Holstiens come to mind first, then Jerseys.

what do you think of when you think of Oklahoma? Just curious.

They don't get into enough to learn much of anything, other than some names of towns.

The micro-brewed stuff is quite excellent, yes.

Farming is big, of course...that's fairly well known.

And so are the farming subsidies.

Although the eastern half of the state has exploded in urban population in the last two decades.

You can say that again.

University of Wisconsin at Madison is home to one of the largest medical schools in the nation.

And decent engineering programs.

Thanks, Duke!

Most of what I "know" comes from watching That 70's Show (not saying much either).

it's not actually a bad way to find out what people from chicago know about wisconsin either. i don't know if any of the creators or writers are from chicago, but the places they mention and go to (other than their town itself) are the places chicagoans know of, go to, or drive through on their way to our vast land holdings up nort'. though the show doesn't quite capture the oddness i experienced when i moved here. for example, it seemed to me that any conversation between wisconsinite males sounded something like this:

beer?
beer.

hunting?
hunting.

goddam FIBs (fuckin' illinois bastards).
yep, goddamn FIBs.

packers?
packers!

I know you have cheese, the Badgers, the Packers, the Brewers, the Bucks, and a beer named after one of your cities. Oh, and my RA from freshman year went to UW for law school.

Your cows aren't happy, according to California Cheese ads.

It's winter year round. Like a landscape painting.

You wear cheese on your heads.

You're two to three decades back in popular culture portrayal.

Everyone from that area I've ever met or known about has be funny and friendly.

The Onion comes from there.

Didn't Mystery Science Theater 3000 come out of there, too?

You cats are alright.

ewww, you aren't supposed to drink that stuff. as far as i can tell, it's mostly sold as a sort of joke - you know, "let's see what we can get the foreigners* to drink"

*wisconsinites have their own state-based nationalism. which struck me as odd, since i came from a place where we routinely ignore the vast majority of the state and when confronted with its existence pretend that it is really part of iowa or missouri or something.

lived here all my life-- and can't wait to get out.

WI is not a bad state- there is some beautiful untouched forests way up in the North woods that is amazing in fall, but damn, it gets cold here ( in fact I am freezing right now)

for my husband and I its just time to move on-- all though I will have to admit that you will not find a better bunch of people ( for the most part).....

Things I like--
--there is a bar and a church on almost every corner ( i think we have more bars per square mile than any other state and coupling that with the nearby churches, it totally amuses me)

--mmmm, beer....miller brewery tours ( i live in milwaukee) mmm, free beer

--summerfest- all though lately, its been bummer fest, but where else can you see great bands for $10 and drink a ton and have a blast for 11 days

--harley's reunions (the last Harley fest- 150 anniversary was the coolest- all the chrome, fumes, and rumbles.....)

--the packers, even though they royally stink this year, yo have got to love them-- they are the "hometown" boys

--packer fans-- they are the BEST, most fun, most personable people you will ever meet-- can't wait to tailgate with them net Sunday

--bubblers and soda, need i said more

things i hate--
--cold, cold, ummm, did i mention that it gets cold here (I know, it gets colder in a lot of other places, but I am just sick of the snow)

--the small town cops here are jerks

--FIBS (sorry for all the Illinois dwellers- i don't mean all of you, just the ones who act like a FIB)

and, i could prob think of a lot more, but its late and I am procrastinating way to much. stupid grant proposal, stupid grad school, stupid real-world...........

Well, I lived 30 miles from the Wisconsin border in northern Illinois for 15 years, so I've been basically everywhere between the border and Milwaukee.. mostly around Lake Geneva, sometimes Kenosha, and maybe a dozen times up to Milwaukee. I'm a fan, I guess...

I enjoy the fishing and the sausage, and the Elkhorn Country Fair kicks ass.. :) huge buttered corncobs and sausage.. I wish I could still go. :(
