America to send aid to CUBA! Amazing!

Just heard on the news that America has offered aid to Cuba after hurricane Wilma, and Castro has accepted. This the very first time since Castro took over as Dictator for life that any proffered US aid has been accepted. I, for one, am amazed!
Any bets on when the world will end?

I thought Castro has said as recently as July the Cuba would never take American aid as long as the embargo existed. He also told the EU to shove their aid where the sun don't shine as well. Turns out flip-flopping can be a good thing.

I'm just suprised the CIA hasn't forced a coup in cuba...well then again pay of pigs didn't go all that well but Castro actually accepted, who knows maybe trade will ensue.

Yes, it is.
Castro's differences with the US got off on a bad foot right from the start. Not being familiar with protocol in international relations, Castro flew to NYC shortly after he took over as dictator and wanted to visit with Eisenhower, who was President of the US at that time. Eisenhower, as is not unusual for a US President, had a full schedule and asked his VP, "Tricky Dick" Nixon, what he recommended. Nixon, for reasons I have forgotten now, responded that Castro should be ignored, advice that Eisenhower heeded.
Castro never quite forgave the snub and the rest is history.
This account may not be quite as accurate as I would like, but it's the best reconstruction I can do just now. :p

HEY! Maybe we can finally get the embargo on Cuban cigars lifted!!! OMG! OMG! I love those! [ drools ] :D
Well, Castro offered aid to the US after Katrina, remember. Having done that, it would have been difficult for him to justify turning it down when the offer was reciprocated. What surprises me most, honestly, is that the US offered it, after having ignored Cuba's own earlier offer to help. Perhaps Cuba's offer wasn't widely publicised in the US media?

Castro passed his mantel of Latin American US resister to his buddy Chavez. However this is good news and hopefully normalization will come of it someday. Would love to see Cuban cigars in the US legally for once. By the way Eutrusca I have several boxes of em. Bought them in duty free shop coming back from Morocco a month ago. They are great!

Hmm, aid, what sort? Political instructors? Military "aid"? Economic "aid"?
Not to be a cynic, but seriously, how many US interests wil be served by this aid?

Disaster aid, I should imagine. But just a step toward normaliztion of relations between the US and Cuba would, I suspect, be a good thing. More of this is exactly what the entire frakkin' planet needs! We should start a "bury the hatchet" movement: "Leave dead issues in the past, the future will be challenging enough even without them!" :D

It would be great if Cuba and the US got onto good relations - it would prove that the whole red scare issue in the US is at least not as strong as it was, and that communist and capitalist countries can live side by side peacefully.

You can bring the cigars in legally or no?
You know how cuba's always sending shit loads of doctors everywhere after disasters? I always think they must have warehouses filled with stacks with them, and when theres a disaster they open up the big metal gates shouting "RUN RUN RUN" and the docs all swarm out to their different vehicles. That would be so cool...

So very cool. How does Cuba get so many doctors anyways?

They train them. :p Their doctors are famed throughout the Third World.
Regarding the topic at hand, the cynic in me has suddenly started wondering whether the US is preparing for the post-Castro era. I mean, as things are at present, the US is not well looked upon by your average Cuban. If the US wants to sweep in and reshape the country in its own image after Castro (which I fervently hope they do not), they need to start "winning hearts and minds", so to speak.
Or maybe they really do want to normalise relations. I suppose I'll believe that when they stop the (slightly outdated) embargo. Still, whatever the reason, it's a good gesture on the US' part.

Slightly outdated? Man, that embargo is almost as old as I am! Heh!

I have a mental picture of doctors sitting around playing cards, with one eye on the telephone, waiting for the alert. Much like the RAF pilots waiting for the signal to scramble during the Battle of Britain.
