Piggy banks banned at two UK banks

Two banks have aparently decided that Muslims are violent people who are likely to blow themselves up in your presence if offended. As a precaution they've banned piggy banks. Salim Mulla, the secretary of the Lancashire council of mosques, apparently approves of this characterization of his people.

Anyone who would be offended by a friggin' piggyback has got to be a loon.

I don't know any Muslims who would be offended by something so stupid (and I know quite a few Muslims). :headbang:

Ooooh...so if I can create a mass-movement of people who are offended by the charging of interest rates on loans, does that mean they'll ban them?

Excellent innuendo, there. Let´s cite what he actually said in the article, shall we?

Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, backed the bank move.

"This is a sensitive issue and I think the banks are simply being courteous to their customers," he said.

Sounds a little different than "Muslims are violent people who are likely to blow themselves up in your presence if offended", doesn´t it?

My point is that he's approving of the fact that the bank is giving his people special treatment. Everyone knows that the banks are only doing it because they think the sight of a piggy bank will make Muslims go all extremist, not because they genuinely believe that there's something offensive about a fake pig.

Bloody stupid!

I hate all this Political Correctness, it was OK and now it has just gone completely mad!

How the fuck is a piggybank going to insult a Muslim, they are totally unrelated!

I could imagine it´s not "his people" (who has the property rights?) he´s concerned about. How about this: Some news genius got wind of it, thinking, "Ooh, let´s have some muslim opinion on it" and grabbing the first half-famous muslim politician (happens over here all the time). And if in his position, what would you have said? "It´s completely uncalled for to take into account the feelings of customers" or "Damn people whom I mostly owe my position! Don´t be woozies, grab some pork!" ?
Besides, is it really wrong to remove signs that can offend others? Imagine living in a country where every butchery has the sign of a slaughtered lamb above its door, or uses lambs as containers for (explicitly ungodly) thingies. How would you as a believing christian feel?

Note: Personally i find it rather laughable, but it doesn´t hurt anyone, and up to now, I didn´t know piggy banks were essential parts of our western cultures and democracies. (Human Rights Art. 43: Every man has the right to keep his money in piggy banks - Can´t remember this one)

There are many parts of Western cultures which aren't 'essential'. Perhaps we should just ban Western culture in general to make sure nobody can possibly get offended.

Tbh, i am not sure Christians would give a shit if a lamb was put above another door, as we (or certainly I) would accept it is another persons/countries culture and traditions that have to be accepted if you move to their country.

Anyways, Christians nowadays are on the majority not devout enough in their faith as perhaps other people in different faiths are. Alot more people are turning agnostic or atheist as the Western World moves faster and religion gets pushed out of the piority list.

Dude, I live in a country where a crucifix in a jar of urine and a feces smeared picture of the virgin mary are considered art. The Christians protest, and one can understand why they would, but nobody censors that stuff. Free expression is a wonderfull thing.

Actually, I believe that the Koran forbids charging interest. The common interpretation allows some way around it (like loan fees or something), but a fundamentalists who will expode when exposed to pig shaped things would probably have already exploded when he saw the mortgage rates.

Wasn't there something in the Bible about Christians not being allowed to charge interest either - which was why it was always the Jewish who were the bankers in medieval to industrial times?
And it's not just fundamentalists who explode when they see mortgage rates...I've had a look round recently (as I'm going to have to get my own place soon), and some of them are bloody extortionate.

More Daily Mail trite. No one is forcing anyone to do anything - if a bank wants to do that, that's their concern. All this moaning about "Fooooooking political correctness" follows the same pattern - pick an extreme example, sensationalise it then attack the whole idea of not going out of your way to offend people. Most people behind these whinges are probably closet racists who are just sulking that nowadays they can't go around calling people "filthy disgusting pakis" without the majority of people looking down on them.

Ad hominem, and in my case, not true.

It's perfectly ok to ridicule a few banks for their idiocy. But that's about all the story amounts to.

Well, if you would remember, Allah once said:

Laughing about them is fine - but the thing is papers like the Daily Mail here do more than that. They are *constantly* picking up extreme examples - like some random loony no one listens to claiming snow men should be banned because they are racist - then using it as a reason to attack all anti racism laws.

You don't need to be a fundementalist to explode at the sight of some of the rates the banks offer.

The Mail does it because it sells papers.

There was a recent comment I heard that the news media promotes a view of a nastier, more violent world than really exists.

The violence in the US has plummeted 65 percent in the past 10 years, but we never hear that in the media. You would think we were knee deep in shooting victims and riots.

The UN even has a report out that world conflict has subsided over 40 percent compared to a decade ago - but we only see the Iraq stuff and terror bombings in London and Israel on TV here.

Adding a few stories about idiotic and isolated incidents of political correctness only fuels the anger of the reader or viewer, and increases sales.

Bad news sells. Not one news organization is in the business of showing us the world as it really is. Even so-called unbiased organizations like the BBC and NPR show us a world of corruption, conflict, mismanagement, and death.

Right, but for one, I lived in an area a lot of the people get very upset if you make fun of their proclaimed saviour and any symbols of his. Ah, catholic Bavaria... sweet memories of stealing crucifixes out of classroom after a law declared them staturtory...
Back on topic. Mostly, people get convinced about something, when you..., well, convince them. Ridiculing them, their beliefs, and things they find offensive that you could never have dreamed of seldom helps.

9/10 Botanical Scholars agree that the Book of Crapimadeupjustnowbutididntmeanitsopleasedonthurtme is one of the most defining books in the fundamentalist Islamic faith. It also has full color pictorials demonstrating the proper things to do when blowing oneself up among children.

Yes. It's a well known fact that when Muslims come into contact with anything that is an affront to their religion they spontaneously explode due to high levels of Semtex in their diet.

It wasn't just banks and businesses voluntarily banning piggy banks. Here's a government office that ordered employees not to display pig-like items. No more Winnie-the Pooh.

The ultimate in politically correct foolishness. besides, why weren't they willing to take such drastic measures for orthodox Jews? They do it for Moslems but wouldn't for the Jews?

"NOVELTY pig calendars and toys have been banned from a council office — in case they offend Muslim staff.
Workers in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, were told to remove or cover up all pig-related items, including toys, porcelain figures, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.

Bosses acted after a Muslim complained about pig-shaped stress relievers delivered to the council in the run-up to the Islamic festival of Ramadan.

Muslims are barred from eating pork in the Koran and consider pigs unclean.

Councillor Mahbubur Rahman, a practising Muslim, backed the ban. He said: “It’s a tolerance of people’s beliefs.”"

But the fact that no one else is reporting it as the conspiracy it is only proves how deep the conspiracy runs. Fortunately it hasn't reached the point where no news paper would run with it, because then that would prove that was an "OMGZ INT3RN4TI0N4L UB3RC0N5PIR4CY" like Bush's plan to take over the world using Iraqi oil and his detachable air-ship/penis.
