So, I'm 33 years old. Congrats.
Anyway, I've just signed up for classes at the University of Houston and want to go back and get a Bachelor of the Arts as an English major.
I thought I'd go for a Masters in Literature and teach at a University level. (As many of you may know, I currently pay the bills by teaching music at a junior high level)
I have two reasons for this:
1] I'm arrogant. It would be nice to have a piece of paper to back that up. I mean ... how much more snooty can you get than a Masters in Literature. :D Ok ... maybe Philosophy .... maybe.
2] I'm very well read. Regardless of what many of you may think, I have read and can actually read ... real books too, not just Mad magazine! I figure a nice degree in literature would pad my resume quite a bit and maybe I could go on to a doctorate and grab tenure at some mediocre university. Who knows?
I'll start up all that mess in the Spring. Should be an interesting experience. I get to be a 30+ student in a sea of 18-20 year olds ... woo!
Good for you, education is a wonderful thing :)
Of course, some of the anti intellectuals will criticise you and call it a waste of time - but they are probably only jealous that they couldn't get into college.

Good luck with it! Don't get too caught up in the party lifestyle though. :D

I agree ... there is no reason, whatsoever, to have less than 2 Bachelors. I have a bunch of kids and I'm going for my 2nd ... why not? Why should education end at graduation?
If you really want it, you'll get it. I even asked my kids if they'd be ok with me going to school while they're in school. They were very happy about it.
I'd originally entertained the notion of going into Veterinary medicine, but I found out that I'd have to start all over again as a Freshman due to much of my science credits being more than 10 years old - yeah, yeah ... now my laziness shows.
i think this is totally cool.
and don't worry about the being older part. at uni here, we have a good load of 30+ folks. and we even ahve a program called "studying at 50+" and there a quite a nice handful of people in there as well..so. go for it.

Good on you. You can never have enough education...although I would rather do Philosophy or Political Sciences if I was you. :p

Seconded. Enjoy it, and I hope it's very interesting. :)

You'd be amazed. We made a drinking game for the Odyssey, to help us "study". I don't remember past book 2
Cool! :) Best of luck.
But you might be surprised. There's a lot of older folks in my BA course. (Politics/International Studies)

I have a friend from Lubbock who calls UH "Cougar High." :D But what does he know? Congrats and best wishes.

Good luck with that. Don't worry about being older than everyone else. There are some mature students on my course far older than you.
Though it reminds of my Granny not allowing one of my uncles to study Literature at university level say, "Anyone can read a book."

Cool man! I'm thinking about taking night classes in order to gain an degree in English too - for no real reason other than I want to. Let us know how you get on.

Here's a radical idea: why not get a degree with which you can actually like, you know ... do something, and then go ... well ... do something? :D

Why not? Sounds like he's doing it for a challenge and a bit of fun. Putting your mind to something and accomplishing a goal that may not pay dividends in the real world is no less an intellectual achievement.

Sometimes it is better to do what you are interested in and want to become educated in rather than just doing what will effect your career. I'm doing History with Philosophy - it will still help me in getting a job simply because it shows i'm smart enough to get a degree, but even if it didn't i'd still do it. Education should be an end in itself.

Watch out! I've been convinced by some posters that university is an evil liberal plot designed to brainwash anyone who attends it. You'll come out in four years chanting "Tax and spend"

Or you could go to school for something useful?
Just a suggestion.:D
