All Hallows Eve is approaching! I for one plan to watch horror movies all damn night while getting smashed on fifty pounds of candy. On my list include:

28 Days Later
The Thing
The Blob
Saw
Jaws
Psycho
Dracula

And many more!

That having been said...What are some of your favorite horror films?

Do you mean the Gary Oldman version of Dracula? I should hope so...very sexy.

erm...

The Others (for being a subversion of just about ALL of the major horror-movie conventions).

Blair Witch and Blair Witch II (for being more about the 'horror', than about hideous amounts of gore, flashing lights, and things going 'bang')

Dog Soldiers (best werewolf movie I ever saw, despite raucous amounts of gore... so, I'm a dichotomy...)

Ginger Snaps (for being the second best werewolf movie... despite a pretty terrible ending)
Gruenberg

that movie still freaks me out. the first time I saw it though I was on acid and didn't understand anything so it may be like some kind of weird flashback.....

I like the Amityville horror series (not the new one although it wasn't as bad as I expected) by the end of the series it is a house built on an ancient burial ground that has a door way to hell, where they used to do satanic rituals, and the house is haunted by a demon and some other random ghosts. They took every horror movie cliche and tried to push it into one basic story, pure cheesy genius (I don't think they meant the cheesy part but it is there anyway)

Aha... for campy/crappy movies... one really needs to look at the Scarecrow series (yes... series) of movies... every play on words you can think of, that has anything to do with corn/crops/crows etc... and a Scarecrow as the monster.

Of course... in terms of bizarrely crappy horror movies... few I've seen compete with "Survival Island" (with Nicholas Brendan from Buffy)... probably the BEST movie I've ever seen........ about teens being murdered by a Pinata....

Yes, that version. I try to just ignore Keanu's horrible English accent, Hopkins as Van Helsing redeems that flaw however.

Dawn of the Dead (The origional is the greatest Zombie movie of all time).

Does Videodrome count as a horror movie?

Hellraiser II is one of my favourites.

Nosferatu (the 1970's german version that I finally got on DVD last night).

The Hunger (One of the sexiest vampire movies of them all).

Near Dark (Hmm, there's a real Vampire theme going here).

Event Horizon (Make a pretty crappy SciFi movie, but is a neat horror movie).

Wolf Creek (a fantastic Australian slasher horror film).

Texas Chainsaw Masacre (EDIT: I of course mean the old one).

I have to go with Frankenstien Conquors the World (originally concieved of as Frankenstien vs. Godzilla but Toho said no.) It shows those little riding toys from in front of supermarkets in the wild. There really is no way to explain that without seeing it.

But I say all of that only because I haven't seen the pinata movie, which sounds fantastic.

I loved the first one, where a bunch of evil mercenaries and their hostages hold up in a farm house until for no apparent reason the scarecrows come to live and start mutilating people.

This is the film where their plan on dealing with being attacked by an unseen enemy is to leave their defensible farmhouse and travel through the dark corn field... THEN someone finds their shoe is untied so they tell the others to "Go on without me, I'll just be a minute." And they do...

Thanks Grave_n_idle, for reminding of this piece of crap. I'm going to have to go out and hire it. :)

I'm a huge Eastern cinema fan... but, I preferred the American remake of Ringu (The Ring), and the American remake of Ju-on (The Grudge).

I haven't seen the original, but I love the American version of Dark Water

Other interesting... even... bizarre Eastern horror offerings, worth taking a look at:

Premonition - a man sees headlines that come true, messily.

Infection - A very Japanese look at hospitals...

The Eye - Eye-transplant surgery, with weird results.

Marronnier - A mad dollmaker crafts dolls out of people....

I haven't seen the original, but I love the American version of Dark WaterPersonally I preferred Ringu to The Ring, but I thought The Grudge was better then Ju-on. For a very, very weird version of the Ring try reading the book. (Also I think Ringu 2 was a whole lot better then The Ring 2).

I haven't seen the American version yet, but the original Dark Water was completely spine chilling. I could tell what was going to happen in most scenes but the tension in the directing was so perfect that I was still terrified. I'll never look at a water stain the same way again.

If you like the genre, and you like Japanese films I really recommend you checking out One Missed Call. It's simultaneously a spoof of the genre and a good example of it.

Here's a Short-List

"The Audition (Oodishon)": Kiri Kiri Kiri Kiri

"Barraccuda": Batshit insane French horror flick.

"Whispering Corridors": Korean Horror piece. Beware of the scariest painting in existence!

"Dawn of the Dead": Best zombie movie ever and one of the best movies period.

"Martin": Creepy psuedo-vampire/serial killer film

"Candyman": One of the most well-made horror films ever

"Evil Dead 2": Ash kicks ass. Plus the dancing corpse of his girlfriend is fantastically disturbing.

"The Virgin Spring": Ingmar Bergman rocks, enough said. Was re-made as "Last House on the Left" by a young Wes Craven.

"Ringu": Sadako scared the hell out of me. Especially in the horrific final sequence which was botched by the U.S. re-make.

"Lost Highway": An unremitting descent into the fantasies of a schizophrenic murderer, disturbing, horrific and brilliant. All the hallmarks of Lynch.

"Night of the Living Dead": Sure it's clunky, but there's some great moments. Plus the finale is a horror classic.

"Suspiria": God bless Dario Argento and his manic sadism.

"Deep Red": Argento gets even more insane.

"Psycho": Freaked me out.

"The Birds": Ditto.

"IT": Ok, so looking back on it now, it's a bit silly. Plus it was made for TV and has the production values to prove it, but this thing scarred me for life as a child and created a life-long hatred/fear of clowns. Damn you Tim Curry.

"Haute' Tension": Recent French horror movie. The end is retarded, but everything up to that is a blast.

I heard about that one... but haven't had a chance to see it yet. :(

The American Version of Dark Water is just that... it's dark. Not just off-the-wall and eerie, j-horror style, but psychologically dark, and not a little oppressive.

Undecided as to which I prefer.... The Grudge or Dark Water...

Some Vincent Price. You have to watch a film or two with Vincent Price in it over halloween...
(Ideally Theatre Of Blood or The Abominable Doctor Phibes. Or The Raven, but that isn't really a horror film.)

Fair enough.

A few more horror films:
Blood On Satan's Claw (barking mad story about demonology during the civil war)
The Monkey Shines (Romero's nastiest and bleakest film)
Night Of The Hunter (Robert Mitchum, even scarier than in Cape Fear)
Mr Vampire (The best vampire film that isn't Martin)
The Plague Of Zombies (Hammer's best ever film?)
Deathline (Devolved neanderthals lurking in the underground)
The Thing (The John Carpenter version with the special effects)
Mad Love (Peter Lorre as a mad surgeon)
Carry On Screaming (Light relief)
Dishonorable Scum

I don't why I'm doing this to myself. I could spend the rest of the year on this post. I love horror movies, even the bad ones. I own hundreds of DVDs and tapes. So, off the top of my head:

Vampires: I don't think I ever saw a vampire movie I hated.
All the Draculas, including the PBS multiparter with Louis Jordan
All the Hammer Draculas
Bloodstone I & II (loony combo of total crap plus accurate folklore; I heart Romania!)
Nosferatu (both versions)
Vampyr (early German talkie, badly damaged, but worth it for astonishing visuals, like the vision in which the hero experiences his own burial)
The Seven Golden Vampires meet Dracula (Hong Kong Shaw Studios meets Hammer Films)

Ghosts: I'm more demanding here; bad ghost movies are as boring as hell.
The Haunting (original with Julie Christie)
The Uninvited
The Sixth Sense
Ring
Ringu
The Legend of Hell House
Bones (that's right, the Snoop-Dog movie)
7 Days to Live (same set up as The Shining but worlds better)

Werewolves/critters:
The Howling series (for laughs)
Dog Soldiers
American Werewolf in London
The Wolfman (for laughs and tradition)
Catpeople (original with Simone Simone)

Witches/Magic/Satan:
Warlock
Suspiria
The Serpent and the Rainbow
Rosemary's Baby

Frankenstein/man-made monsters:
Frankenstien
Bride of Frankenstein
Son of Frankenstein
All the Hammer Frankensteins, especially Curse of Frankenstein, Revenge of Frankenstein and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Reanimator
Bride of Reanimator
Frankenhooker (best damned parody)
The Invisible Man (original with Claude Rains, sequel(s) with Vincent Price)

Human Horror (non-supernatural):
Freaks
Psycho
Curse of the Catpeople (psychological)
From Hell
House of Wax (original with Vincent Price)

Also:
Any Hammer movie
Any Val Lewton movie
All those 1960s Edgar Allen Poe movies

That's all for now. :)

There was no rest to the series, unless you are referring to Foreigner 3 and Foreigner: Resurrection both of which are truly horrible and should be properly filed under a synonymous name to protect the rest of the series.

Most of the good movies have been mentioned, so I'll just add that the originals of The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street are good, but there sequels are largely a waste of time. Arsenic and Old Lace really isn't horror, but I like it so I'm going to break the rules and mention it.
On the other hand, The Grudge was funny as hell, and Evil Cat (a bizarre 80s Hong Kong horror thing) are shining example of accidental comedic genius.
On the other hand Saw is a steaming hunk of predictable, pointless, self-agrandizing crap (much like Hannibal), and the only two scray things about it was the realization 1/2 way through that I spent 10 bucks and 2 hours on it, and the later realization that other people thought it was good.

I'm glad someone else thinks the same as I about that turkey. Not only was it predictable, it had one of the lamest ending ever, which made no sense the more you thought about it.

For me, 'The Shining' rules. Though Romero's 'Dead' series is way up there as well.

Heh, I was pissing myself during that...I had two female friends, one on either side of me - one had a blanket she was hiding under for half the film (she'd brought it specifically so she could hide under it in the scary parts...), and the other felt nauseous for most of it. There were two redeeming features of that film - the line 'Some of the cuts were so deep, we found his stomach acid on the floor' (about the guy who had to try getting through the razor wire), and the tripwire which fired the shotguns. Apart from that, yes, it was crap. Going to see the sequel soon :D

Oh yes, the shot gun trap. You know, if it weren't for the fact that the trip wire shotguns are immediatly proceeded by a cliched "man with toothpick slays 12 armed guards"-style scene where the officers violate the first law of death threats (You can only threaten to kill someone twice, at which point you have to either kill them or drop the gun and admit that you were joking the whole time) that would have been nifty.
I esspecially hate the ads for the sequel "I have never killed anybody", well what about that guy locked in the bathroom with no hope of escape, Mr Jigsaw Puzzle? Or was it his fault because you never told him he had to starve, just put him in a situation where starving was inevitable.
