Because they are insignificant.

It's OK. We're not major world players. We needn't be mentioned, especially as our population is so minuscule. Being insignificant in this sense isn't something I find negative at all - Sweden's value lies beyond international acclaim/fame/whatever to me.

Yep. And I wouldn't say something vague, as in "the Eastern USA".
However, don't drag me out of context. If you say that "you don't expect Americans to know where [Romania or Moldova are]", then let me tell you the US is quite familiar to me in geographical (and historical etc.) terms.

You say you meant this post for US-ers. Let me ask you:
- you mean you want to know if US-ers were born abroad? I could get that, but how many US-ers were born in Australia? Shouldn't Cuba and Haiti be in there?
- how can you restrict answers in this forum? I'm not a US-er, and yet I've answered...

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on a small passenger ship bound from New Zealand to Vancouver, Canada....in the middle of a hurricane. My parents had tried moving to New Zealand, but my dad couldn't stand it, so with me in my other's belly they went back to Canada. The ship ran into a hurricane and while it was in the eye of the hurricane, I was born. Since my parents were both Canadian citizens, my citizenship was automaticly listed as such when we reached port.

Bah! Portugal is a nice country.. and the language is beautiful.. and their influence on South America was immense, as well as on world trade for several hundred years..

Why is everyone bashing their own country in this thread? Sweden's okay too.. I like their meatball, and lutefisk, and some other things.. and without "The Seventh Seal," "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" wouldn't have been half as funny. So there.

Also, Cyprus is kinda neat too.. a buncha Greeks tried to draft my dad when he was visiting relatives in Athens and violence broke out in Cyprus.. some soldiers stopped him and asked him if he was Greek, and offered him a rifle and a seat on the truck when he said he was.. He coulda had a free trip to Cyprus! :p

Yes, I was raised by Romanians.. :p My mother worked full-time, and my father lived in California, so she took in a few Romanian students and their middle-aged relatives to make sure I didn't burn the house down or something.. room and board in exchange for looking after me and my brother six days a week.. They used to beat me for mimicking their language when they were on the phone. :( But some of the younger ones taught me well in the art of 8-bit Nintendo. :)

Anyhow, Romania fought the Turks for a long while, like Poland.. so they have my respect there.. Nothing against Muslims or anything, but it was politically necessary.. they had to use force to maintain their culture, and were successful for a long time, so kudos there.

Thanks, I guess. But most of that is not fact - don't worry, I don't hold you responsible, it's probably what you heard.
There was no real "we" up until around 1850; the fighting with the Turks was not spectacular - it tended to be inane. The first states appeared here in the XIVth century... and were submited by the Turks in the XVth. Is that long? Sure there were uprisings after that, but there way more instances of collaboration and obedience.
In general, the Turks weren't bad per se (if people would get rid of XIXth century nationalist theories, they'd agree with me). Their state was crumbling because it had a monetary system based on silver when silver meant nothing anymore (blame Mexico for that, actually - the Spaniards drowned the markets with Mexican metals) and they just had to get resources (not from us, but actually through us). Add to this that they too were continually harassed by Austria and Rusia.

Portugal is nice, afterall it has improved a lot since the 70's... But we still are the least educated of the EU, and we used to be the poorest member state until recenly (yay for EU enlargement :D )

Yeah, I know "Romania" didn't exist then, but it was still Romanians doing the fighting, if you consider modern geography... 20th Century Romania is not as much fun, siding against us in WWII and the whole Ceausescu thing.. but we're all partners in NATO now, so it's cool. :)

Which country was I born in? Depends on whom you ask. Some would say West Berlin was East German territory currently under Allied occupation while others claim it was part of West Germany, with the Allies protecting it.
So technically, I wasn't really born in any country at all, more in no-mans-land or disputed territory.
