Incidentally, how hard was it to get into Durham, I'm applying in June/July, and really need advice?

I live in London, and I'm always up for getting drunk with strangers.
Some people did something like this in Manchester a while back, btw. (I live in the USA and won't be going to Britain in the foreseeable future, so count me out for the moment.)

Well, it'd be cool to meet up in London. There must be quite a few NSers in the there and thereabouts.

Durham's not that hard, I got an offer to study maths there, and don't remember them even being one of the places that interviewed me, just have a good looking personal statement (extra curicular activities ect.), although why are you applying in June/July? Surely it needs to be in by january?
Also I'm at Imperial, so might be up for getting drunk with random people/

I'm in Yr 12, so we start UCAS forms in summer. I really want to go to Durham though, I know Oxbridge is out of the quation now my GCSE's weren't exceptional, and to be honest Durham appeals more. How is it?

I'm fairly sure Myrth's a Londoner. Not too sure about anyone else though. You might be able to convince some of the other locals (read: people within a 500-mile radius) to hop on a train/bus/plane over to London.

No, from Southampton, where PM lives (IIRC).

Ah, for some reason I'd got it into my head he was Dutch. My mistake.
He visited the Netherlands once or twice, and stayed there for a month or two, but he isn't Dutch.
First of all, explain how one could take a train directly from Holland to Manchester. (I assume you read the thread. If not, ignore this.)

ideally, the best place to meet up would be Leicester (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=52.649729,-1.115112&spn=0.248927,0.772339&t=h&hl=en), being right in the middle of england... but london's way cooler i'm sure :D
but it wasn't so bad going up to manchester last time... wherever this potential one is i'm definatley interested at least

PM - No, Leicester would NOT be the best place to meet. It is evil and wrong. Plus, technically the 'Heart of the Kindom' is Dunsop Bridge, near where I used to live. Although the night life would be less than average there...

woot for the student railcard ;)
another reason to choose london: tink lives closer to there than blackpool nowadays (at uni)
hmmmm and on a similar thought - its a long shot - but i wonder if TIN would come? the 3 of us (TIN, Tink and moi) had planned a meetup in london at one point anyway.... *strokes beard*

well Leicester was only an educated guess made with the help of google maps... so scrap what i said then :p

Erm, well, basically, Durham is known for a few things:
A). Oxbridge rejects.
B). A hugely disproportionate number of students to residents, with students composing about 1/8th of the population.
C). Being tiny and very, very beautiful.
D). Having one of the best Universities in the country.
E). The oldest existent LARPing Society (http://www.dur.ac.uk/treasure.trap) and one of the oldest Assassins' Societies (http://www.dur.ac.uk/assassins.society) in the world.
However, this is more or less irrelevant. As for how to get in, I really couldn't tell you - but come up, visit the department and a few of the colleges on your shortlist, and have words with their Vice-Principals or something. But nothing'll help as much as a personal statement which says you're committed to your course, but also have a life outside of academia. There's no magic formula for applying anywhere, man; just make 'em realise what a beautiful and unique snowflake you are.
And if you're planning on visiting and you want a tour guide, gimme a shout... somehow. I don't know. My nation doesn't exist anymore, so PM me at Newer Watenho.

I know of several NSers who claim to be within a reasonable distance of my house alone—Sdaeriji, you're about 2-3 hours away—but I could never really meet any of them, let alone get them all to meet somewhere.

So here was my thought. And maybe it's cracked out thinking because of where I live. Actually, time zone issues just occoured to me that make this not only difficult, but kind of stupid. Heck, why let that stop me now...
We find a day, the NS Convention Day-where all the cats who are interested gather with all the NSers they are close enough to to get to. Like a NorCal Convention, and NorthEastern US Convention, etc. etc.-try and meet someplace that has wireless because someone is bound to have a laptop and we all log in on a convention megathread that day.
As I already said, not fully thought out, but anyway...

Erm...within 500 miles? That's everyone in the UK, plus much of the population of France and Belgium...and possibly Holland. And some of Germany.
ideally, the best place to meet up would be Leicester, being right in the middle of england... but london's way cooler i'm sure :D
This is a genius idea. I'm at uni in Leicester :) Though if you're looking for a night out, it's fairly crap. Could try Nottingham, it's easy to get to from just about everywhere by train, plus it's a fairly good night out.

London's easier, pure and simple. Most towns have a direct train route there, and, the Irish bars rule:)

Ok...I just don't like London. Far too big. Give me a city about the size of Nottingham any day. Wouldn't stop me from coming, though.

However, I am still close enough to go into the city. It takes me a bit over 3 hours to get there by train.
