When it's lust at first sight...

Have you ever walked into a store, thinking about nothing in particular, and looked up into a set of amazing blue/brown/grey/green/whatever eyes, and been taken totally off guard? Or had your groceries packed, your sandwhich served, your car serviced by someone who just struck you as unbelievably hot? And how do you feel? Off balance? Confused? Wondering why this particular person is making such an impression on you?

What is lust at first sight? What is it based on? And men...I'm not talking about that run of the mill "wow, that girl/guy is hot, mmmm...", I'm talking about that kind of attraction that leaves you short for breath, stammering like an idiot, avoiding their eyes at the same time as you are trying to drink in every detail...the kind of instant attraction that haunts you for hours, days, perhaps even weeks to come.

So share your stories, and let us know if you've ever acted on that instant, powerful attraction to a complete stranger...

No...I don't mean that kind of attraction...something heavier...like you can't get this one person out of your mind for a while, and it may not be because of their looks, but something just reached out, grabbed you and shook you like a rag doll when you met them.

Define "met." Does "met" mean actually talked to them? In that case, I haven't met very many. I'm painfully shy. *blushes*

And has that level of attraction lasted? Or has it been replaced by something more tangible and realistic? I do wonder how long that kind of 'awe' would be able to sustain itself once you actually got to know the person. I don't actually think it would be healthy if it did.

Well, yes, it's happened. Most recently (a few years ago) it was a woman who very strongly resembled an ex-girlfriend of mine - obviously I hadn't gotten over her as much as I'd thought. This woman could easily have been my ex-girlfriend's younger, prettier sister. I didn't act on it, though.

Another time, I met a woman who literally left me speechless, because she came as close to my ideal of female physical perfection as I've ever met (easily summarized as "petite, brunette, big brown eyes", though that's an oversimplification.) Once I got over my speechlessness, I discovered that she also was very intelligent and had a very cool, off-the-wall sense of humor - also positive aspects to me. However, she was also engaged. Damn it. :headbang: ;)

Anyway, it's been obvious to me for a long time that such "lust at first sight" is entirely physical, and does not at all guarantee that the two of you will be right for each other, or even get along at all.

Well, she only broke up with her last boyfriend 4 months ago...and it's only in the last week that we've actually got together.
The initial attraction lasted 4-6 months, then I found I was actually able to talk to her without making a complete tit of myself. I've turned down a few other girls because of her in the last 18 months, and I'm very happy that I did.

Yes, although not for a long, long time. As a matter of fact, that was my first reaction to my ex. She had almost honey-blonde hair down to her waist, totally captivating green eyes, and a figure that just would not stop. I was a gonner from the first time I ever laid eyes on her. Heh!

No...not really met...picture yourself walking into a coffee shop, stepping up to the counter, and then trying to act casual as you are completely and utterly blown away by the person who is there to take your order. Taken by surprise...hardly able to mumble out your order...desperate to get away even as you wish there was some way you find an excuse to linger...

No, 'met' might not be the best word.

I once bought tickets for the wrong film because the man selling them was the most beautiful and attractive man in the world and I got so tongue-tied I could just nod to whatever it was he guessed I was there to see. The urge to touch him, to lick him, to molest him was very difficult to contain (it's very cliché, but you could drown in the blue of his eyes and get lost on the smoothness of his tanned complexion, not to mention his quite amazing arms and ass), but thankfully Swedish general coolness in relation to strangers was there to prop me up.

X-men was good, though. It's nice he didn't think I was there for the chick-flick I actually was there to see with one of my sisters. *>_<*

Any chance the situation will change soon (either she or you will move away)? The sad thing is, the semesters only two weeks old... I basically had vacation already (Canada would be a bad idea. While she's east German, she's spent her year abroad in Canada learning English, and is as Canadian as an East German girl can get. Canada might be nice, but it would remind me too much of her). In two semesters we'll be going on our semesters abroad... but that's still a long way off. I've basically been avoiding any social events I suspect she'll be at, but we have some mandatory classes that we both attend, so there's just no escape.

I have managed to progress from a state of sadness to a state of anger, but that's taken the most of at least half a year. Right now, I can't really imagine being in a relationship with any girl, and since I'm quite straight, it condemns me to being single.

That's what I mean...when you do run accross a Somali woman without the covering, (because she wants to be more Western, or is actually not Muslim), they do tend to look like Ethiopian/Eritrean women. The covering is usually the way I can tell them apart, because both groups have that same kind of bone structure and skin tone (usually).

No worries. It isn't until you get a bit more exposed to or involved with a particular ethnic group that the differences are noticeable...and even then sometimes you're wrong. But for example...I can, with fair accuracy, tell a Chilean from a Peruvian, from a Salvadorean from a Cuban either via looks or accent...and in some cases, even have a good idea of WHERE in their homeland they are from (or their parents). But put me in a room full of white, blonde Europeans, and I'm lost:)

I can totally relate to the coffee shop thing...that's almost exactly what happened to me. The worst part is that I was with AlphaGeek!

We went to our favorite coffee shop one morning and I was really tired and since no one was actually standing at the counter, I stood behind AG and leaned my head on his back until the barista showed up. I heard AG order, and when I stepped around him to order it's like time slowed down, light shone down from the heavens and I seriously heard choirs singing. I blushed from the tips of my toes to the roots of my hair, I'm sure. I'm not normally tongue-tied, but I could barely stammer out my order, and the whole time this guy (hot, blonde surfer looking type) is just looking straight into my eyes like he knows EXACTLY what is happening in my head. Thank god AlphaGeek didn't notice! I was so mortified I didn't even go up to get my coffee from him, I made AG do it. Oddly enough, the next week when we went he didn't have the same effect on me at all. Maybe because I was prepared? I don't know. I told AlphaGeek about it later and we had a good laugh about it.

There was another time when I was working the cash register at a store, and a couple of the girls on the floor came up to me and were giggling furiously about this customer who was SUPER hot. Oh. My. God. Beautiful brown skin, black hair and the warmest brown eyes. He came through my register and I discovered he was Greek, and well, kind of a player. Like, you could tell he knew he was good looking, and he EXPECTED women to fall all over him, and that he was sucessful in that. That pretty much killed it for me right there. Like a bucket of ice water over the head. I could tell my indifference was confusing him, and I got to enjoy a little mental smirk about it.

That is so true...a good looking guy who just expects you to grovel at his feet...suddenly their looks mean nothing. I hate that! The type of guys that have had this sort of instant lust impact on me have generally been 'average' looking guys, maybe even a little geeky looking...buddy holly glasses...when suddenly you get a glimpse of rippling muscles where you expected skinniness, or a tattoo...the other kind of guy that has floored me have just been guys who seem very confident and good at what they do...serious, not flirty, sexy in a way I can't really analyse.

This happens to me with an almost alarming frequency. I live on OSU campus, which means that at any given time, a gorgeous woman is no more than 20 yards away. I haven't acted on it , but this phenomenon has the unfortunate distinction of frequently happening to me while I'm [i]driving. I've definately hit my share of curbs because I was completely unable to take my eyes off a particularly pleasing specimen.

All things considered, I'm pretty used to it. This kind of thing used to bother me a lot more than it does now. Now I just ball up my fist and strike it repeatedly on the countertop/dashboard/co-worker's back--whatever the nearest solid surface is and howl at them. A few times I think they've even heard me from inside my restaurant. If we dont have any customers we get pretty loud sometimes.

Yeah, I love my share of the eye candy on TV, but instant lust? Nope. I seem to have a thing for nerdy looking older men with slight beer guts and maybe going a bit bald! I know, it's weird. Lately it seems it's not so much what the person looks like, it's what they SOUND like. I've been going weak-kneed over voices for some bizarre reason!

Lately it seems it's not so much what the person looks like, it's what they SOUND like. I've been going weak-kneed over voices for some bizarre reason!
That's okay...for a while it was smell...a particular cologne I was never able to identify...I got over that, but the geeky, serious guys with a touch of bad in them...they'll always get me!

Heh, you should hear when I leave a message on someone's phone. My voice sometimes gets so deep that it rattles the speaker assembly inside.

Before my balls dropped, I was frequently mistaken for a woman on the phone. Needless to say, that doesn't happen anymore.

I really should see if I can get my forum title changed to "Cyber Pimp."

EDIT: on second thought, I'd prefer to have the applicable skills in real life so long as I'm waving a wand here.

Still, hope springs eternal. I'll be able to [legally!] drink in bars in a couple of short months. That might help.

It might...or it might just make you waste money! I don't know what the dating climate is like where you're at but definitely do NOT use any of the pick up lines from any of the threads on this forum! :D

Although the one about chloroform is pretty funny.

In my experience, the alcohol is simply too much of a distraction.

"Hmm....flirt with girl....beer....flirt with girl....beer. More beer." then Repeat.

This is true...and really...how attractive can someone be when they are stumbling, falling down drunk? Even if you're in the same state? Not very. At least..not when you wake up...

Kind of, yeah, I was on holiday in France, and met this person in a football match. Never really bothered though, I prefer the friendship for the most part, less chance for heartbreak.

I've had lust at first sight happen once. Ten years or so ago.

My brain essentially turned to styrofoam and I couldn't concentrate on that class at all. It was all I could do to keep from staring at him the whole first day.

Of course, the next day I made sure I was sitting next to him...and then things progressed quite well, if I do say so myself. :D It was a great class fling!

Fortunately the 'brain turned to styrofoam' affect eventually wore off enough that I was also able to do fairly well in the course as well.

Heh. Yeah. Though even if both of you are relatively sober, a bar is generally a really bad place to try and pick up. Too noisy, and no privacy. (Usually. Some smaller places are OK.)

My first year of medical school I met one of the most gorgeous guys I've ever seen in my life, he just happened to be walking into the chemistry building the same time I was, sadly we weren't in the same class. We ended up dating for awhile, but it didn't work out, toooo bad. I tend to be attracted to men who are my opposites (tall, dark hair, dark eyes) while I seem to like girls who are more like myself (blonde, petite, light eyes). There used to be a doctor at the hospital I worked at, but he ended up taking his residency out of state...*sniff* :)

So share your stories, and let us know if you've ever acted on that instant, powerful attraction to a complete stranger...
relatively often i get... that sort of thing, but thats cos i'm a bit of a nervous person :S
however tangiable or real 'lust at first sight' is less frequent for me - though i did get it in the post office the other day. i hardly noticed her walk over to serve me, so that took me off guard, and then i looked up into her incredible, deep eyes and couldn't speak for a moment or two... man i'm a loser :p

and speaking of '... at first sight', the girl i fancied to death all the way through school (but was always too shy to do anything about), she was love at first sight i swear. i still think about her like 4 years on :(

Deep, medium, whatever...there's just a certain tone that snags my ear. AlphaGeek doesn't have it in person, but he does over the phone. I know, I know, it's weird!

The actor Jake Weber totally does it for me...the only reason I watch the show 'Medium'.

I cant count the "lust at first sight" incidents I've had. And I've acted on nearly everyone-wether it was just breaking the ice and seeing what was going on there talking/joking whatever, or hiring her, or going the distance. I cant count how many times I have done an uncharacteristic "double take" at a woman as she did the same.

Welcome back? Like there was any chance a thread could appear in NS with lust in the title and you wouldn't be here. It's like expecting a dog to not notice when you're cooking steak.

Yes, I have, and I hate it. Often, I find a reason to dislike the person intensely, as to cancel out the completely irrational thoughts. I don’t want to deal with that shit.

3-4 times a day ... what's yer point? :D Sometimes I even flirt with my eyes a little. Makes me feel younger. ;)

Edit: Incidently, that's how I met my wife and the mother of my children. I met her at the Foreign Language Fair in High School from across the room ... I took a chance ... I bought her a Dr Pepper and asked her out to a movie ... the rest is, well, history.

When our eyes met we were drawn together -- all else in the room disappeared. Time stopped. My mind was numb, I couldn't process what was happening. We stared at each other for minutes without speaking.

We were married a year later. Our thirtieth anniversary is New Years Eve.
