I have to say the USA for two main reasons.

First, who picks up the tab and gives the most in aid to other countries? The USA does.

Second, I live in Oklahoma, where people will go to extremes to help you out if you are in a bind. The OKC bombing, the Hurricane survivors and numerous other disasters have shown just how far people in Oklahoma will go to help out those in need. It is hard to realize that the rest of the country isn't necessarily the same way since these are the people I see every day. I think you could probably have a similar poll with the US broken down into different regions/states.

Or Greece. Everybody in Greece seemed to be happy and friendly. Same with Spain.

Maybe it's just the Mediterannean.

In per-capita terms, the US is way behind many other countries. So while the total dollar contributions are impressive, touting it in this manner is like 100 American's each giving $1 to a charity and being proud that they raised $100 and then looking to one Finnish person giving $50 and telling him that he's a cheapskate because he didn't match the total contribution of 100 Americans....

Out of my very small personal sampling of the world's nations (US, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas), I'd have to say that the Canadians were the friendliest.

I should also add that I've never met a Brazilian who I didn't like. Brazil is definitely on my list of places to go.

<Insert obvious misogynistic joke regarding anal sex here>

The nicest people I have met were a couple Canadian tourists, and they annoyed me very severely. In fact, I think that their incessent politeness was done less as being actually nice and that they might have just been secretly mocking the stupid American. But then that would make them non-friendly, and quite rude and arrrogant.

In my experience (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, UK, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Tunisia, Canada, US, Netherlands, Checz Republic, Belgium, Romania, Ireland), the Turks are the most open, friendly, helpful and open.

The Irish come a very close second, being very friendly, polite, curious, open, but if the mood takes them, less helpful.

The French are third for warmth, friendliness and helpfulness. The difference is, in France you have to ask for help. In Turkey and Ireland, it's quite sufficient to look a tad confused or forlorn to get asked by strangers if they can help you.

Because of my mum's occupation I've met many Middle Eastern people, and they all seemed very friendly. I think it's perfectly possible that they would score very high.
And besides: Does Egypt actually behead people for religious reasons? AFAIK, the president has been battling the religious parties for many years.

But ultimately I haven't been to every country in the world, or even every country on this list. So I can't say much more than guess that people would on average be equally friendly everywhere.

Mmm. Out of my (limited) experience (Australia, NZ, Indonesia, US), I'd have to say Indonesia. Australia, I'm biased towards as it's my homelandcountrything, but, to be honest, Australians aren't really that nice. Sure, out in rural communities, everyone waves to each other, and treats everyone like mates, but, when you get into the urban areas, it's almost as bad as the US.

I only stayed for a short time in the US, but the people there (NY), seemed rather rude, nasty, foul-mouthed and pushy, not a great feat for the so-called 'friendly' Yanks. The Indonesians are nothing short of amazing; after a huge disaster, they pulled themselves together, and there was no rioting, looting (I'm looking at you, America!), nothing but quiet determination, and the firm resolve to restore their homes. They may not be rich, nor well-educated, but those are the kind of people I admire. NZ is nice, but not remarkable in one way or another, from what I've seen...

And then theres the whole stupidity thing. A lot of Aussies are nearly as stupid as Americans, sucked in by media hype and fearmongering. We are rude and ignoran and racist to boot (well in the city anyway).

Nope, sorry. Tons of rumors, yes. But when the police investigated it, they came up with absolutely nothing. No one has claimed to have been raped, and no one was killed in or near the Super Dome.. the worst we had was some elderly people dying of heat prostration..

The fact is, the chaos in Asia was real, with real killings and real rapes of women and children, whereas we had a few hundred cases of looting.. often of essential goods, but sometimes not.

Don't bother, I'm used to the response about the Lions. I'll give you the story. The first AFL game I ever watched was in 1998, Port vs Brisbane (at the Gabba 123-123). From that point on, I supported the Lions all because I didn't like the Port jumper. Just my luck that they won 3 (nearly 4) in a row...

Yeah, its a little bit disappointing to see the apparent A-League apathy, especially in places like Newcastle, but the quality is actually surprisingly good. I tell you what, though, if Australia make the World Cup, the A-League will flourish...

but the people there (NY), seemed rather rude, nasty, foul-mouthed and pushy, not a great feat for the so-called 'friendly' Yanks.

As I said, New Yorkers aren't a good example of how friendly Americans are. Remember, America is not all the same. And we're damned sure not all New Yorkers.

Well, most Americans I met, I met outside the US... and while there were a few very nice people, the majority of them doesn't qualify as very friendly...

Where in the US were they from?

Also, Americans are fine singly, but just don't get us in large numbers, then we're not so nice. Of course the same goes for people everywhere, but Americans take it to an extreme.

Can't remember for all of them (and I don't really know about half of them anyway), but there were 3 people from Texas who left a VERY unfavourable impression on me when I was in Canada, 1 guy from Minnesota and one from Ohio who I met in Germany, one girl from Washington DC i met here in Dublin... oh, yes, and one girl from Illinois who would easily qulaify as one of the most righteous, annoying, arrogant and ignorant persons I ever had the misfortune to meet.

Chavs are cooler than British Emo kids, Chris.

I'd have to say

1. Minnesota
2. Switzerland
3. Canada

Minnesota may not be a "country" but they're an identifiable culture. And I don't think I've ever met an unpleasant Minnesotan.

And remember, not all "Yanks" are the same. You'll find a big difference in how nice New Yorkers are compared to Nebraskans.

Have you ever been to Minnesota? I have the misfortune of living here, and the state's full of incompetent drivers, mindless dweebs, dickheads, and grade-F jerks.

You can't tell that this site is dominated by North Americans?

If you add up the votes for non-North American sites, you'll see they got more votes than the North American ones did. (At least, at this point it's 43-36.) It's just that their votes are spread out across more countries.

First, who picks up the tab and gives the most in aid to other countries? The USA does.

Well, that's true in total dollar amounts, but we've also got the most money to spend. Calculated as a percentage of GDP, the US comes near the bottom of the list of industrialized nations. In per-capita foreign aid, the Scandinavian countries put the US to shame.
