Other than the evident racism inherent to apartheid, could anyone shed a little illumination as to its political inclination and other such issues?

I know quite a bit about South Africa and apartheid. If you have any specific questions, fire away, and I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

Many members of the Afrikaner National Party were admirers of the fascist system. In fact, Prime Minister Balthazar Johannes Vorster (PM from 1966-1978), was interned during WWII for subversion (he was a member of a pro-Nazi paramilitary organization that fought South African troops), and Hendrik Verwoerd edited an anti-Semitic, anti-British newspaper during the 30's and also sympathized with the Axis Powers during WWII. Daniel Malan, the first National Party PM, immediately released all fascist subversives, saboteurs, and Nazis from prison upon being elected. Like the Nazis, the National Party put state authority above civil rights, believed in punishment without trial, imposed an ideological form of education, both had censorship of the arts, both strictly censored media content, punished dissidents by house arrest, banning, and banishment, etc. Under apartheid, the government was generally anti-capitalist (read South Africa's War Against Capitalism by Walter Williams), as exemplified by the huge number of governmental monopolies, parastatal organizations, etc.

I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
