Converting old money into current money.

I'm writing an essay that uses lots of historical material from around the 30s to the 60's. Some of the focus is on what someone makes for doing a job, though I really have no idea what the amount is in current money.

Eg. In Regulating the Poor it gives the hourly wage for a farm labourer in Southern Illinois as 50c an hour. I guess this is very low, but does anyone know how I can find what the equivilent is in todays dollars?
