Very cool car. Twin Intercooled baby!

However, the Subaru WRX STi is better in every way.

edit: It does indeed have an auto 6 speed. So yes I'd take that over an STi.

I liked the Volvo in TOCA and I think I used it in GTSomethin'. Not really driving the car, though-they're both just video games. Unless the car is controlled by two small joysticks and there is a box that I have to look through to drive...well, you get the idea.

I have a hard time getting into touring cars, but I think there is something to these hot rod sedan/coupes like the S60, S4, M3/5, etc. To be stereotypical, I think of them as "Daddy's concesion." Least that's how my dad viewed them. I lean towards the Audi, but that might have more to do with being a child racing fan in the eighties during the 'Unfair Advantage' years where the quattros where so dominant that they where just outlawed cause no one was going to be able to keep up. And they where part of the Porsche fold with VW-and as I do still I like all things Porsche (Cayanne not withstanding...)

Of course if I had the money I'd get the S60 R only because I can't (don't, won't) drive stick.
true the WRX mighat be better but i like the way the S60 R looks>>>>> i think that i would be less likely to get pulled over in it than in the WRX....

The R is a fantastic car -- it's so refreshing to see Volvos become sporty and aggressive.

My family's had one since they first came (picked it up in Gothenburg and drove it home). It's such a great highway car -- I get it up to 200 kh without even noticing.

My only complaint is its turning radius is terrible -- don't think about whipping it into tight parking spaces or quick u-turns....the thing is a boat when it comes to turning around.

shame that. the designs are homogenizing :(

i like volvos - favourite is the c70 (http://www.saint.org/convertible/c70_blue_big.jpg). don't really care for 0-60 or horsepower... i just want a car thats comfy and looks smart :)
edit: thats an old model in the pic tho i think - more sleek & rounded nowadays

What's up with that? I saw an old Top Gear episode where they where demoing the Clio Sport V6 and it had this huge ass turning arc. I don't drive modern cars out of principle but has WAY more to do with finances, but even my most modern ride I (I didn't choose)-an '85 Vanagon has people who drive more modern machines stunned at my ability to turn around in smaller spaces. On the last film I worked on we had a Model T that could practically spin in place. What's with the turning radius' getting worse as time goes on?

We had a Model A as our 'hero car' and it was fantastic. The actor who drove it lamented having to go back to his regular car (he was c list, so I couldn't quip "Just buy one with your pocket change ya rich %($*^#^%#"). Pretty cool little car. That 50mph top speed sort of limits long distant travel, though. I wish I had one.

The 5 speed shiftronic. It's good, though I normally prefer manuals. I test drove a six-speed and I found the clutch a bit too springy for me, though I'm sure it's easy to get used to.

That's a sexy car, I've always loved the Volvo's, very reliable. My parents have a Toyota Avensis, also a sexy car, but apparently not available in the US. We have an 03 Ford Focus, even though better than the 02 Ford Escort which became sandwich filler in an accident (two weeks after my abdominal surgery, BTW), its character just doesn't live up to it...

i use to detest Volvo's--- i had always thought of them as granny cars but a few days ago i saw the S60 and quickly changed my opinion

That's nothing. This is my dream car, and i found one for sale at a local gas station, so i'm keepin' my fingers crossed. oh, hachi-roku, we will be one:fluffle: !

Engine/Technical
The AE86 was available with a fuel-injected 4-cylinder twin-cam 1587cc 4A-GEU engine in Japan and Europe, which was also used in the first-generation Toyota MR2 (AW11), which had a maximum power output of over 120BHP and 103 lb/ft of torque in standard form. The AE86 came with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and later came with the option of an automatic. Pre-1985 engines were equipped with T-VIS (Toyota Variable Induction System). The AE86 was also equipped with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD).

In the USA, a modified 4A-GEC engine was used to comply with California emissions regulations.

The AE86 used ventilated disc brakes at the front, and solid discs at the rear. The car was equipped with independent coil spring suspension at the front, and beam-axle coil springs for the rear.

The AE85 models came with a less-powerful 1452cc SOHC carburettor 3A-U engine without the LSD and was equipped with rear drum brakes. Lower-spec American models used the 1587cc 4A-C SOHC unit.

There is a slope that is quickly gone down when unfettered we start talking about coolest or favorite cars. There is an attainability that goes with a currently produced Volvo, and while the muscle cars that have been listed are also attainable (for muscle cars of late I've been drawn to, no joke, the bubbleback Barracuda (http://www.magnumforceracing.com/cars/cuda/Starfish_side.jpg)-perhaps because my dad owned one when I was a kid and there was even an unfullfilled threat of me getting that car in High School...Curse you parents, High School would have been a lot more 'successful' in that 'Cuda. The bright yellow Malibu Classic (not to be confused with the similarly named muscle car) didn't quite have the same pull, and I got the tickets anyway. Or the 67 Cougar (http://www.thornhillcruisers.com/67%20Cougar.jpg) for the less personal reason that I got one to handle the way I like in GT2....aaaanyway).

But soon we're off the rails (hehe) and we might as well Cut (http://www.bugattipage.com/voitures/bugatti/atlantic.jpg) to the (http://www.cgtimes.com.cn/upload20040401/040612081943481.jpg) Chase (http://www.testarossa.nl/gallery/250gto_black.jpg).
:D (http://www.kn.p-net.pl/hobby/porsche/galeria/historia/1955_james_dean_550_spyder_01.jpg)

I may have lost my point. I think of the new cars that are out or coming out I like the new Mini (sorry, I do. I love the old one, but I like the new one), I've always had kindness towards the Miata, though I wish it looked a little more agressive (which would spoil the point of the car, so I'll never get my wish). I want to see about the Solstice and the SKY. I like that there are finally a couple tiny inexpesive sports cars coming around.

The best volve I've driven would have to be the old P1800. Beautiful car. As with all the volvos through the sixties to about the mid 80's, the transmission and engine are well nigh indestructible. As for modern-day cars, things with turbos are fine if you know how to properly take care of them. Most people don't. Point in fact, can someone tell me what coking refers to when concerning turbos? If you don't know, you probably shouldn't be driving a car with a turbo in it. As for my favorite modern car, it's either the Lotus Exige, or the Mini Cooper S, depending on whether I want mainline performance or a balance of performance and comfort.

My great uncle used to race them. One race the clutch decided to quit, so he spent the race just slamming through the gears. Gained him about a second and a half per lap too. When he finished the race he expected to have to completely rebuild the transmission. Opened her up and you could hardly notice the wear. Old volvos were waaaayy overengineered, not like most cars today.

Even after you shut off the engine the turbo's fans will continue to spin if you were driving it hard right before you turned it off. As they spin they generate heat extremely fast without constant airflow to cool them. The engine oil surrounding the fan blades will begin to solidify from the heat and friction. When you start up the engine again this will flake off, but if it happens often enough the aggregate will build up and eventually ruin the turbo. This is why buying a used car with a turbo can be a risky proposition unless you know the full history of the car and know the owner took care of the car.
