What is the meaning of your nations' name?

Orcam Rorre
25-10-2005, 17:13
Regarding the name you chose for your nationstate, does it have any particular meaning? My nation, Orcam Rorre, is 'error macro' spelled backwards. How 'bout you guys?

My Nation is Zilam...There is no meaning behind it...First thing that came to my mind.
Cannot think of a name
25-10-2005, 17:21
It means I couldn't think of one and I was tired of trying.

I didn't really think I'd be here for very long so I didn't think it mattered what I called it-I just wanted to see the game. Joke's on me. Gave me an easy idea for a flag, though:

I just made up the word 'safalra' many years ago while at school. I had a dream where it meant 'freedom'. Years later I started using it as my name online (and as a nickname in real life).
Smunkeeville
25-10-2005, 17:43
everyone called me smunkee in highschool, some people still do, and I found out recently that some of the people who where my friends never did know my first name. I am smunkee, it has been years since I graduated but my parking spot is still empty everyday, freshmen know that it is Smunkee's spot and have heard stories about me, but haven't actually met me, it seems to be a huge deal for them when they do (I have no clue why, except for my highschool years were pretty interesting, like when I got the chem. teacher fired.) anyway I just added ville to the end, because I thought it sounded good.

as far as the definition for Smunkee well, that is a long story but my husband has since changed it to mean "sweet monkey" as opposed to the other "s" word that it started out as.......

Kryozerkia
25-10-2005, 17:45
Meaning... all the good names were taken and I had a lot of time on my hands.

Though, if I were to talk about my other nations...

Kutou-koku - taken from my favourite anime show. Kutou is the name of the warring nation with a strong military and the attached suffix, koku is attached because I heard it being used on the end when talking about it as a country, though I can't verify the meaning.

Farflorin - I wanted a country to be named Florin, but it was taken, so this is the next best thing. I'm sure most of you have read and heard of The Princess Bride

Meekinos - I wanted to name one of my countries after a Greek island...

Schandfreude - I wanted to make a penal colony for Kryozerkia, so this one came about. It's a German phrase meaning "shameful joy".

Roycelandia Exemplar - after Roycelandia left the region and Roycelandia Medius replaced it, the rest of the land was divided and I got Exemplar under my nation's administrative jurisdiction.

H N Fiddlebottoms VIII
25-10-2005, 17:51
The Fiddlebottoms family was the topic of a short story (parody of The House of Usher) I wrote in nineth grade about a family that degenerates into rapidly increasing insanity and decadence with each generation. (For example, H N Fiddlebottoms IV was the last one to actually know what the "H N" meant)
H N Fiddlebottoms VIII won a country in a game of cards and within a year, had started 2 Rebellions, been taken over by 3 foriegn powers and lost control of the country to organized crime. The most impressive aspect of this, though, was his ability to have all of this happen simultaneously.
In the end, the family was eliminated when H N Fiddlebottoms XIX forgot how to breathe, which is quite understandable as he was being distracted by looking down his sisters blouse while she was strangling him. Then the house fell apart and the narrator started bitching about cheap Chinese Manufacturing.

One-Ballia
25-10-2005, 18:04
My full nickname is "Professor Twiggie One-Ball", so my housemate suggested One-Ballia, since it's harder to make something out of Twiggie (my common nickname and now more common than my real name).

My other nation "Bludgeoned Pigeons" came about because my other housemate got some birds, which I've never really liked. I decided to have my Psychotic Dictatorship be my outlet for dislike, and pigeons were the first thing that came to mind for birds likely to be bludgeoned.

Well, I really couldn't think of anything right off the top of my head, so I got to thinking to myself "self, what is it that you like best these days?" and I replied "well, that would have to be music."
So I said "self, what kind of music are you currently listening to?" and I replied "a classic rock mix, darling Jen (that's my real name)."
So I said "self, what song is currently on and who is it by?" to which I replied "Crazy Love Vol. II by Paul Simon", which was met with a smug "well there you have it."

Hence Simonist -- the followers of Paul Simon. Unfortunately, until I put a link to my picture in my profile and stated my location to be "feminine rage" rather that just....rage.....I kept getting called a boy. Totally didn't take the forums into consideration when creating the name.

If you want to be technical, it's been done dozens of times. But so what? New cats are around and it'd be a pain in the ass to have to go drag those threads out of the grave with answers from nations that aren't even around anymore in it (actually, that part is interesting...but I digress). It's a simple friendly thread, the kind that helps new posters get comfortable and lets old posters reword thier old answers and as retreads go just not that bad. There are few threads that after three years haven't been done at least once before.

I was damn sure on the "czar" half (hence the half I got right), and the first thing that ever came to mind back in the day was that "das" means "of" in Portuguese or "that" in German. Then I always figured maybe it was actually part of a word, but at that point I realized there were too many combinations of possible partial-words including "das" to probably EVER figure it out, so I settled into the calm idea that though I didn't know, it probably had something to do with you being the Universal.

My is a derivative of the term soldier of fortune

Soldier of Fortune = Mercenary

drop the soldier, add a Nation

Nation of Fortune = Nation of Mercenaries

Well isn't that a bit of a coinikidink ;)

Ironically the place where I got my nation's name there was a nation of mercenaries, but they were the Tendel, I believe.

My nation's name comes from, in a round about way, the World of Velgarth as written by Mercedes Lackey. In that world there is a race of people named the Tayledras. They are divided up into Clans. Each Clan lives in a place known as a Vale.

There has never been a k'Shaya in her books. k'Shaya is the name of my Clan. There are several of us who felt that we were family dispite the lack of blood connections. So several years ago we decided to make ourselves into our own family. Since we all liked Lackey and particularly the Tayledras, we decided to become a Clan. According to some research by one of our siblings the word "shaya" translates into "lover" with an implication of soul to soul as opposed to physical lovers. This is similar to how the latin words "fila", "agape" and "eros" all translate into "love" but have different meanings. Now in all honesty I have yet to find any supporting documents OL to confirm my dear brother, but also nothing to contridict him either. So we let it stand. I believe there are several Tayledras "words" out there on various websites that have never appeared in anything Lackey officially did.

the k' in front of a name indicates a Clan. Thus we are k'Shaya and where we live is a Vale....k'Shaya Vale.

In any case, Λακεδαιμων, is an alternative name for Sparta, or the a son of Zeus that founded said Sparta. I couldn't think of anything else countrywise when I signed up.

Botttom of the first page (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=9834257&postcount=15) on this thread has my explanation.
Shorter Version: H N Fiddlebottoms VIII won a country in a game of cards (his first act was to change the name of the country to his), but then lost it to simultaneous invasions, revolts, and out of control organized crime. The original nation I started with was Dobbstown. But it got nuked, in the course of things. I created a series of Dobbstowns in the aftermath - Lesser Dobbstown, New Dobbstown, etc., but "Dobbsworld" sat best with me.

Besides, I made me a wicked flag.

Kahanistan
26-10-2005, 01:04
The gist of mine is that I was reading a lot on the Israeli conflicts and about Kahanist extremists (basically Jewish terrorists who attack and kill Arabs and moderate Israelis) and got the idea that Israel should give the Arabs a state consisting of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and a land corridor, even though this would cut off the worthless desert to the south from the rest of Israel. I thought that it would be a good idea to banish the Kahanist terrorists and other extremists to the desert, rename it "Kahanistan" or something similar ("Sharonistan" or "Zionistan" would be equally appropriate, but for my NS name I chose "Kahanistan" simply because it sounded more esoteric to me.) Sorry about injecting my political views in, but it was the only way I could explain it.

I've had other nations with better names, but, through it all, Bottle has remained.

Mods can be so cruel

My first country was Guevarararashamara. I like Che Guevara. The second was Comandante, his nickname. Comandante got banned, and I was pissed at the mods, so my new name was Stop Banning Me Mods. I got banned again. Now I'm Mods can be so cruel. Makes sense.
NERVUN

Alas no interesting story to tell.

Just simply I wanted a third nation to counterbalance my first nation, in order words run it as close as I could to Ayn Rand with moral conservatism as I could. To make such a state I decied to use NERV from Neon Genesis Evangelion but that was taken and for some reason NS wasn't going to allow me to place a space, hyphen or underscore in the name when I tried to add UN, so NERVUN.

However a small mistake in not checking which nation I had logged into when I first started posting in general meant that the nation I normally run in ways I dislike is the one I post under. Go fig.

Erm. When I started my friend had these nations called "Ariba1"-"Ariba7" I meant to do "Aribastan" just for fun but the two "r"s just came out. It works for me now. I have a lot of trouble typing my name with only 1 "r".

I was tired, my brain wasn't working, I was recovering (slowly) from a trans-atlantic flight, and Krakozha was the first thing to pop into my head. Later, I was reminded that it's the same as the country that guy came from in The Terminal...goddamnit....

OMG, I loved Earthworm Jim! Any sign of him on TV in the US? He disappeared from Irish/British TV several years ago, I mourn his loss...
