The day of reckoning is at hand... I promised you that a conservative government couldn't last much longer and true to my word the conservatives have suffered yet another blow in the great Commonwealth of Australia.

When polled by NineMsn (http://ninemsn.com.au/) around 60% of voters stated they would change their vote over the government's position on Industrial Relations.

That's 4:1 to the left, with the conservatives scoring points in my homestate for actually defending health care and social security...

I just bailed a friend out of jail, put a deposit on an apartment, paid my finance licence fees, paid my study fees, bought new furniture & may be a fathere soon... so the short end of it is no :P

Besides, you have to trade off between a nation where everything is deadly but where the left wing runs unchecked and wherever you live. ;)

Yay!

Nonetheless, most people might disagree with the Government on this one (I think it's awesome to watch the churches, the salvoes, the unions, the ACCC and even the people against this, and all the government has is a majority in both houses) - but no one cares.
Republics are always dictatorships for a limited term, and right now I really wouldn't go to Australia if you're of the leftist persuasion - every night watching the news I get high blood pressure...

Here's a crash course in Australia. Replace the American idea of "The North" with "The East" and the idea of "The South" with "The West".

Western Australia even seceded and all.

Basically the countries wealth is located in South-East, co-incidently the most pro-union, pro-liberal area.

Melbourne is renowned for it's "colourful"* atmosphere.

Not able to vote, and obviously going to be flaming lefties as most young naive, idealists are, that is of course until they discover that the leftist government they have voted in has ruined the nation, and they become conservative. you dont need anymore proof other than look at australias last election results, total senate and house of reps control by the conservative minded government.

1) In Queensland we have dead people voting, so underage voting isn't out of the question. ;)
2) This is a poll targetted at people who voted Liberal(conservative) in the last election and would change their vote. Hence why I didn't vote.
3) Primary votes didn't give the Co-alition control of the Senate. It took massive preferences from third parties to do that.

That's true.

...that is of course until they discover that the leftist government they have voted in has ruined the nation, and they become conservative.
That's false, there actually is no statistically significant difference in the two parties' economic targets and indicators.
If you want the whole info, read "Political and partisan cycles in the Australian economy" by Crosby et al.
And have a look at this online article (http://static.highbeam.com/e/economicrecord/december012000/itstheeconomystupidmacroeconomicsandfederalelectio/), although it focusses on a different aspect, namely what economic conditions favour which party. (Sorry about the site, the normal google-scholar source seems to be off-line - maybe you have access to an academic databse though?)

...you dont need anymore proof other than look at australias last election results, total senate and house of reps control by the conservative minded government.
And now you see that the people were conned (or let themselves be conned) with this interest rate scare. Why did no one mention interest rates when Howard himself was Treasurer? Because Labour is a weak bunch of egomaniacs, that's why. They are no longer a viable alternative, and we suffer for it (for example with these "anti-terror" laws)
And furthermore, just look at the official polls on IR-Reforms. The people don't want it, and that's the truth.

Well, it seems that my theory on only idiots and assholes voting for conservative parties stands true.

Well you seem to be a very narrow minded individual who probably cant accept that just possible, someone else might have different opinions to youself, and can justify them. I would'nt call myself a conservative, rather a libertarian, however if you lived in australia, you would undoubtably know that the party most in favor of civil and business freedoms happens to be the right-wing party. So before you blow off some more of your unjustifiable temper, do something you may not have done before, think rationally and consider that other people may have different opinions to yourself and sometimes there is more than one correct opinion, Shades of Grey.

I think the new anti-terror laws are truly frightening. House arrest, restrictions on movement & trade for suspects. Not people who have been charged with anything, just suspects. Jail sentences for reporting or even talking about people who are being held without charge. A shoot to kill policy for apprehending of suspects. That smacks of totalitarianism to me.

In the latest ACNielsen poll, the ALP leads the Coalition on two party preferred by 52% to 48%. Newspoll puts Labor at 54%, which is huge in political terms and would easily see them win an election if it was held today.

So really, the NineMSN poll, although it may be skewed to a younger, left-wing demographic, is still relatively accurate. But I'm sure by the next election the polls will be in the Coalition's favour again, there's still plenty of time for Labor to fall apart as usual. In fact they're already falling apart as we speak, nobody likes Kim Beazley.

A more reliable poll was in the Financial Review the other day (by memory).

Due to the IR changes:
More likely to vote Coalition (Conservative) 8%
Won't affect vote 55%
More likely to vote Labor/Green 30%

The proviso question then asked about past voting habits; turns out nearly anyone (be it left or right) who said that the IR changes would affect their vote, were party loyalists who already voted with that party.
