I am inspired by a post on the NS forum I just read, about high school proms.

For some strange reason, I thought of the Columbine High School massacres.

Which lead to me to think, when will be high school prom be bombed by a bullied social outcast? Think, the high school prom is a showcase for the epitome of the 'preppy' , 'jock' , 'cool' and 'spoilt-brat' parties of the school - and to the mind of the aforementioned outcast will be the perfect target.

Of course, if they're intelligent enough to plan a complex bombing; they should also be sane enough its close to the end of their suffering (i.e. high school). Of course, some kids just aren't sane after what they've been subjected to.

In the US some high schools have metal detectors to detect weapons during the semester; what about security procedures at proms? Is there anything?

at my school there's none of that but we live in a "nice" suburb, surely nothing could happen to us!

Hm.. Good idea, I wager .01 cents that it happens within 100 years.

Wow, in one fell swoop all the marginal kids rocket straight to the top of the class by virtue of not being at their own proms. Who'd-a thunk it?

Nah, there are plenty of people that are quite smart, but are also bloody insane- John Nash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash), for example, is schizophrenic. John Adams thought that little devils were constantly watching him, trying to spy on important documents that he was writing; he would have his wife set up sheets around him to block the devils' sight. George Washington almost beat a man to death for mistreating his slaves (although I can't really blame Washington for that). When Thomas Jefferson was a child, he would kill small animals and immediately cut them open in order to study the circulatory system. John Quincy Adams delivered a speech to Congress, claiming that America's future lay in space, promising 'lighthouses in the sky' and that one day, an American would walk on the moon; this speech was made in 1825.

Of course, there are rather more specific examples of people that are absolutely insane, yet smart enough to set up elaborate bombing schemes- Timothy McVeigh and Osama bin Laden come to mind.

Have you ever read Steven King's novel "Carrie" or seen the movie of the same name?

Meh...never much cared for proms. Always thought they should be done away with. Outdated and stuffy, and frankly they don't do much for the kids who can't afford to go or don't have enough popularity to go. Not to say there should be some sort of enforced social equality, but enforcing social inequality is just as bad. Besides, the money raised for that sort of thing can go to other causes, like our pockets.

I've never read that particular book by this 'Steven King', no.

Hmm, well, my school senior prom's supposedly have hired security personel for this kind of thing and others(our homecoming only had about three cops...).

Depends, give someone like Colodia some C4 and a box of M&Ms and I'd say next friday...

interesting thought... I'm an aussie and we don't get into prom stuff as much, but it makes you wonder doesn't it?

Meh. I was happy to stay home when my schools one was on.

It's a possibility, but over here, they don't let you go if you haven't got a date anyway, so that rules out most of the lower social classes.

The movie of that was fucking awesome.

I was sitting there in a hotel one day, in a cruddy country town, with nothing to do but watch TV. So I was flipping through the channels...sports...chinese news...blah...blah....crappy softy looking prom movie...meh.

And then the fun began. And I was thoroughly entertained.
