Childless, Childfree or Have Children?

Just felt like seeing how many people fell into each category here on NS.

So, are you:

-Childless. You don't have children now, but want them in the future.

-Childfree. No children for you, ever. I would still consider people that have had abortions or given children away for adoption childfree as long as long as they don't want children, ever.

-Have children. Pretty self-explanatory, you have kids.

I'm the type of guy that would like a family some day. I'm still debating as to whether I want just one child (preferably a daughter) or two (daughter and son). With my brother passing away over the summer, I'm now the only one with the chance to pass down my family's name through a son, so it's a tough choice. (Note that I'm not archaic in my beliefs about the family through the son, I just would like to see our last name continue to exist, as it's pretty freakin' rare anyway)

Man...when are the polls going to work again?

Have children. 2, want at least two more, possibly more than that.

I dunno, it just seems that children take over your life for 20 or 25 years, and frankly, I could forge a reputation, legacy and drink an awful lot in that time.

so what, they're funny, except when they're babies, they're just loud and annoying then, but that's only for 2-3 years...

Stupid poll that won't exist... Pah.

I'm childfree for two main reasons:

1. I can't stand the majority of children for any substantial length of time.

2. If I had children, they'd probably turn out horrible, and I really don't want to unleash more idiots upon the world. That or I would end up doing strange behavioral experiments on them, and well... Yeah. I wouldn't make a good parent at all.

I would prefer to never have children. Smelly, sticky, expensive...why not just get a puppy?

However, I am currently dating somebody who very much wants to be a parent at some point in the future. I really dig this somebody, and there's a good chance I'd be durn happy getting married to him, so I am trying to keep my mind open about kids.

The odds of us adopting or fostering are very, very slim. We borrow other people's children for just long enough to want to kill them, then give them back... usually about 2 to 6 hours is all it takes.

Want to have one or two - probably one (unless the twins that seem run in my boyfriend's family crop up), and adopt one sometime in the future when I am finally out of school.

just got married and neither of us want to have children-- for two reasons we both want to be selfish and be able to pick up and go when we want to do what we want and with the crazy hours I keep (I have resolved myself to the fact that I will never have a normal 9-5 job) that kids are just not an option-I just want to enjoy my husband and my life right now.

so, here is an added question-- for all those who don't want kids, have you found that the overwhelming majority of people either dismiss your claim as "oh you'll change your mind" or look down on you? its something I have really noticed a lot lately.

I've heard of that happening to plenty of people, but I haven't gotten it much myself. Then again, I'm only seventeen and the subject doesn't really come up with me. And I think my parents should know me better than to ever think me a mother, I can barely take care of myself properly. The distaste I often show towards children could also be a clue for them.

Childless, I'd say then, since you seem to want children. People obsess too much over having children that share their same genetic material, they should adopt more.

Childfree. I'm not all that interested in bringing children to suffer in this world; there likely won't be much of a world for them to live in by the time they're adults anyway.

Besides, this planet is overpopulated anyway. Add to that the fact that I'm gay male (no unwanted pregnancies:D ) and that I have little to no desire to adopt children, and you have your answer.

Don't get me wrong: I don't hate kids. I'll be more than happy to play violent video-games with my sister's future children and get them their first beer during their adolescence. I just don't want some of my own.

It's always more fun making other people's children turn bad :D

Yes, I have. My parents have told me that if I won't have kids they might as well kill me now because I'll otherwise be of no use to the human race (I have a feeling they were mad at me then, but still).

Pfft. That's one of the stupider things I've heard. One person passing on their particular genes is in no way going to benefit the human race. Unless they're like... immune to AIDS or something.

Really though, actually making something of your own life is more likely to benefit society than making a new life is.

3 kids - 3 and 9, boys, 12, girl. And I am one of those patronizing people who will say - once you have them, all that stuff about being tied down, dealing with whining, finances, etc, goes down the drain once you hold it just once in your arms.

Although I must confess, Bill Cosby is right. They do look a bit like lizards when they first come out, until they get cleaned up and pinked up.

I know that. However, some people think we were only placed here to continue the race, and for no other reason. Of course, the likelihood of my making anything of my own life is quite low at the moment due to my suicidal tendencies.

I will never have kids for the following reasons:

- I can't stand them.
- The world is overpopulated anyway.
- If I have any compassion, I won't bring more beings to suffer in the real world.
- Nobody would ever want to have kids with me even if I did want them.

Basically, count me out.

Childfree! I'm far too selfish to ever be able to take care of children. And I hate them. Possibly because I'm so selfish.

That and I think deliberately creating new children with the number of parentless kids that there are out there and the already too-large human population is extremely irresponsible.

At some point, if I ever have my empire built up enough, I may choose a child to be brought up as my spiritual heir, but squirting about sperm and dallying in genetics are far to haphazard as far as methods for finding an heir go.

No kids. Dont want em. Don't even want a puppy.

Its hard enough making my own way in the world, figuring out my own moral standards and acceptable behavior, without having to figure it out for someone else besides.

I borrow other people's kids when i want to teach or play games, and then give 'em back when i'm sick of 'em, or bored with them.

Works for me.

Yeah, women especially get that. Some people look at women as breeding machines, and worth very little except for their ability to spit out babies. They think that if a woman doesn't have a child, her life remains worthless. But as your namesake has proven, women can produce more worthwhile and lasting contributions to the race than by random breeding.

Don't worry about those who think they know what you want. One-third of all women remain childless due to choice or infertility. Don't let them make you think you're the Lone Ranger. Lots of us out there don't buy into the "happily ever after" crap of the standard, socially acceptable story.
