A friend of my wife's recently bought a car. While discussing how she was going to pay for it (her only "job" is baby-sitting, $200/month) I'm told she gets a SSI check to the tune of $600/month. Why? She's effectively illiterate. My beef? SHE WAS HOMESCHOOLED!!

So her parents refuse to send her to a public school then don't educate her event to the point of the basics and now our taxes are supporting her.

Dontcha just love it.

(BTW, she put the car in a ditch w/i 24 hours.)

Being aware of how stupid people are is a disability. I demand money.

No, that's actually a disability. I mean you can't go out during daylight, you're burned by holy water, and repelled by crosses and garlic.

Plus: sleeping in a coffin ruined my spine.

Naw, their disability comes from being forced to ride in horse drawn carts rather than driving cars.

And they should also qualify as home-schooled.

There is something else going on here. She couldn't get a disability check for being illiterate. If her IQ was under 70 she might be able to.

That's not really her fault that her parents chose to homeschool her extremely poorly. It's not as though she could have effectively forced her parents to send her to school. Though I do not believe you can get a SS check for just being illiterate. There are thousands of people in this country that are not literate in English that do not recieve any sort of government assistance. I suspect there is more to this than her just being illiterate.

it is her fault that she is still illiterate though. it is something that can be overcome, in quite a short amount of time too. disability checks are for people with disablilties, I also doubt that she is getting the check just for being illiterate, because it took my mom 2 years and 3 lawyers to get checks for a real disability.

exactly. most people with real disabilities have a hard time getting the goverment to believe them. it takes many many tries and tons of red tape to get SSI.

some people do have a knack for getting government money but not by not knowing how to read.
