Now lets say that in the USA...

both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party quickly die out for some reason for another, now there is a power vacuum. What third party would you want to rise and become the next major power? (Poll coming)

The Libertarian Party (or, failing that, the Dada Party).

Libertarian Party IMO would be next because they are pro-small gov't and Americans seem to love that.

I voted Libertarian because I actually know quite a few of them, I bet there are more Libertarians than most people realize.

I voted 'Other' eventually, people will be voting for inatimate objects to run their governent, with people claiming themselves as their "spokesperson," whom are the only ones who can understand this object.

People vote for different objects, but the same people stay as spokespeople...hey, if they can understand a toaster, they should understand a vaccuum right?

Thats how power will be in a few decades. Changing the skin, but not the actualy person.

I'm appalled that no one voted for the Constitution Party or the Reform Party.

Most Republicans and conservatives would change to Libertarians - because that's what the traditional Republican Party of the early 1990s was selling - less government, less government interference in your life. Somewhere along the line, Bush changed that (neocons). But most Republicans would like to be Libertarians.

Democrats stand for more laws, more regulations, more government programs, etc. - the opposite of libertarian. In their world, the closest possible replacement party should be Socialist.

The exception would be Democrats who want the freedom to do drugs - they would probably end up being Libertarians, because Libertarians don't want any more War on Drugs, either.

My choice would be the Greens, but I doubt they would do well if they were suddenly plunged into ruling. The smaller parties need a bit of time to get used to being in congress before they'd be any good in the government.

The thing is, even if the Republican and Democratic parties both collapsed, the politicians who run them would still be around. They would simply form new parties with the same old ideals, and go on about their business.

Of course, that doesn't mean they would only form two parties. Most likely scenarion in my opinion is for each party to split into two parties, leaving us with four more-or-less major parties, all still larger than the Libertarians. An alternate scenario is for the moderates of both major parties to unite after their radical wings split off, leaving three major parties. Another variation combines both of the above scenarios, leaving five major parties.

Sooner or later, some of the parties formed in the above scenarios would disappear or merge. Before long we'd be back to two major parties. The American political system is designed to work with two and only two parties, and it doesn't adapt itself well to a multi-party scenario.

That being said, I do miss the Reform Party, though not its founder. Perot was a case of right message, wrong messenger.

New York State had a libertarian Supreme Court Judge.

Unfortunately, that's not nearly as cool as it sounds.

Well, if I read it correctly, somehow a party full of Socialists became Republicans. I don't understand how it happened, but that's what it looks like from over here.

I don't support capitalism and favor a centralized system of government which controls all means of production. However, I greatly value libertarian views in all aspects except when dealing with the economy. Unfortunately, I believe the economy would have the greatest impact on my life and therefore chose the Socialist party.

You can call me a libertarian socialist. For more information I suggest searching for the definition on Wikipedia.

Bakunin summarizes the philosophy: "We are convinced that freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice, and that Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality."

It's hard to say what party would rise after such an event. The tastes of the American public would probably stay the same, meaning that new parties will form, or old parties will change. Most likely to have a rebirth, I feel, is the Reform party. They are so corruption ridden and weak that they are poised to adapt to anything.

If the United State suddenly became a multi party system I think many Democrats and the various socialist/communist parties would merge into one massive Socialst bloc.

If the United States stays a two party system then what parties emerge will determine on economic and world events. For example if we have a severe economic recession or even a depression (quite possible) then one of the emerging parties will be more Socialistic then previous left of center Democratic party.

No idea, don't agree completly with any of those, just like I don't agree w/ democrats, probably see which of the parties that I agreed w/ the most and which proved competitive and go for them.

I chose socialist. Since communisim seems to have a high rate of corruption and the abuse of the people. The other parties just dont have the same views I think are important. Or I would make my own Party and bring about a better country. Where... gasp... people actually care about one another.
