Downloading Music

Believe it or not, but I've never actually downloaded music before.

But now I have a web connection that is plenty fast enough, and I want to get the Nirvana album Nevermind onto my PC.

Do you know a site? Are there any where I don't have to pay?
Which sites do you normally frequent?

Although I don't download, I've managed to get nearly 4000 songs together.

I pay for all my music, one way or another. The benefits of richness, see? Plus I like CDs because they're shiny. Ooooh, shiny!

Do you know a site?

I think that MSN allows you to download music. It costs money though -- you pay credit into an account which you can then use to buy stuff.

Are there any where I don't have to pay?

I don't know of any (legal) sites that allow you to do that. And nobody can discuss the illegal ones here...

Which sites do you normally frequent?

I don't download much, but when I do I use MSN Music. Yeah, I know. But I don't care. I also hear that iTunes allows you to download music for a price, but knowing Apple it probably comes with some strings attached ("you can only play downloaded tracks between 8pm-12am, on an Apple Mac computer or an iPod, and you must stand on your head as you do it" or something).

Meh, you don't have to be rich to own a lot of CDs. Plenty of discount stores around that have surprisingly good stuff.

I generally only download rare albums that'll take me ages to find.

I get my "non-copyrighted" (independant bands) from THIS PROGRAM (http://shareaza.sourceforge.net/) but I do not, repeat, DO NOT recommend you download anything with it that is copyrighted. It is illegal, and the R.I.A.A. is gunning for pirates. They especially don't like this program because it can get copyrighted material. I , however, need not worry, because I'm careful not to download anything "illegal", and niether should you.

That being said, the program is 100% legal to use if used legally. (which I do)

It's completely legal in Russia and the songs are dirt cheap ($US 0.02/Mb).

Seeing as they have paid all their fees to the Russian counterpart of the scheme that musicians/composers have to get recompense for songs played/distributed, they are entitled to share the songs. As they are not breaking the law, I don't think anyone else is. I don't know US law, but it's legit here. It's basically what iTunes does.

In Poland, it is still legal to download music for free.

<gasp!> You haven't bought it yet? Shame, shame. :D Just kidding.
I would recommend that if no good site is recommended that you go to a used CD store. It's usually fairly cheap there. Not the cheapest they would have, though.

What a silly thing. How the hell do they know if you've ripped them or not? Pointless.

Download limewire or bittorrent or something. There's supposed to be a really good one for full albums, but I can't remember what it is (I generally only get full albums when I buy them in the store)

The RIAA can't touch me.

w00t for Canada!

Also, they only go after people who share a lot of copywrited music. If you download a lot and keep it in a folder that you don't share then it doesn't matter.

Any kind of bittorrent program automatically shares partials of what is being downloaded. You can't fully stop it from uploading something as long as you are in the midst of downloading it.

And as for being immune in Canada, I wouldn't be so sure!

Marc Emery took a hit from a joint as his fans smoked and screamed for his freedom in front of the U.S. consulate.

The King of Pot, as he is described by American prosecutors, faces extradition for seed sales - a crime that isn't prosecuted in Canada - and up to life in prison if convicted by a U.S. court.

BTW, I think it's absolutely horrendous that they are doing it, but the fact remains.

I recommend eMule if you're on Windows, or aMule if you're on *nix. I've found that the network is one of the best for sharing any kind of files. I mostly use it for getting old, obscure, out-of-print games, but there's plenty of music to be had too.

I'm told SoulSeek is good too, but I only just downloaded a client and haven't really spent any time checking it out yet. WinMX is okay too, but there's a lot of crap to filter through to actually get the files you want.

If you really like a CD though, go out and buy it. If you don't really like it, well you probably weren't going to buy it anyway.

Try newsgroups - they're legal, and you have to pay, but not very much - $20/month for unlimited downloads. If you don't know how to use them, go here (http://www.slyck.com/ng.php). It also has a list of good bittorrent sites, but remember kids, downloading without paying is *bad*, mmmkay?

Newsgroups are legal - yes.

Uploading or downloading (other peoples') copyrighted material from them is legal - no.

You have to pay - no, there are several free newsservers out there of varying quality and reliability. Aside from that, most ISPs have some kind of rudimentary groups server.

I only illegally download what I can't download legally.

Kind of ironic that Metallica is draggin it's heels so much in the online music industry that they are the most pirated band ever. :p I love Irony, don't you?

I understand that Metallica is now available on Rhapsody but as whole albums only. Kind of kills the point, eh?

I have a Mac, but I HATE paying for music. So, I downloaded Limewire, which is a safe (at least on Macs), legal, P2P program that allows people to download music, videos, and pictures. They do make it for microsoft :mp5: running machines, but I believe that it puts quite a bit of spyware into the computer. Plus PC users can get the PC viruses that hackers put on Limewire, but Mac users are practically immune!
