Facebook.com--all the rage in college?

So. My college just got this and it's spreading like wildfire. Shall we conform? Shall you conform? Is it worth it?

(By the way, would anyone happen to know how to create a fake celebrity profile on there? I've seen profiles of Jesus Christ, Satan, Bob Barker, etc)

They didn't have Facebook when I was in college. Hell, the Web didn't even really exist when I started college... :(

Eh, it's a good way to stay in touch with old friends. Sorry but I don't know how to make a fake celebrity. All I know is Jesus is my homeboy on facebook.

I was on Arpanet before being on the Internet was cool.

Back in my youth, computers were called, "books". Calculators were called, "slide rules" or "brains" or "pencil and paper". Word processors were called "typewriters" and they didn't have any memory.

If they didn't have any memory, how'd they know when to ding at the end of the line?

Not to get off the subject, but has anyone noticed that the SAT and ACT scores have slipped over the past few years since regular level High School math students have been allowed to use calculators?

Makes you wonder...

My college is relatively small, what with only 1,600 students or so. However, when our campus was added to Facebook a month or so ago, nearly half of us were on there within 24 hours.

I'm on there too, but I'm not sure what all of the fuss is about. I can see why it'd be exciting to get back in touch with old friends from high school or below, or to finally get that contact information for that hottie you've been drooling over, but, aside from that, there's really not much...

Yes, conform. When you're out of college and need networking for jobs and stuff it comes in handy. Just try not to get addicted to it. I know a lot of people who waist way too much time surfing around.

It isn't spreading that fast at my school, even though it is in the school paper every other week. Then again, I don't know that many people anyway.

I had facebook at my university last year, but my current school doesn't have it. I was intensely pressured to join before the transfer....y'know, "just in case". Nevermind that these people who wanted me to join all have my phone number, two email addresses, and at least three ways to contact me via IM services.....it simply wasn't enough.

Join me in my non-facebookiness. Quit if you're already on it. More people need to realize it's not really all that important to meet people who happen to go to the same school as you. I mean dang, you could always do that in class

The people I go to school with who I know on facebook are the ones that I went to school with, well had a class with, and thet don't even want to meet me. One girl added me because we went to the same highschool, I am positive. She was in my homeroom, for four years, I don't believe we have ever said a single word to each other.

Facebook asks you for your name, and 5 zillion other things for your profile, when you sign up. If you enter the information for some other person, and upload a picture of him/her, that's all it takes. I believe you still need a real college email address, though, so you may have to be willing to do that in place of a real account for yourself. Or ask a friend who isn't using facebook anyway if you can use their college address. You can set a second alternate email that facebook will send all the notifications to if you want, so that your friend doesn't have to get a zillion emails about it. Keep in mind that if the celebrity/whoever you pick is overly popular, you may get enough mail from it to be a significant drain on your time just to read it, let alone respond.

I am a purposeful abstainer based on the fact that it is stupid. Of course, I abstain frm 97% of all the things that happen on campus based on my determination that they are stupid, and then I waste a few hours a day on NS and make elaborate plans to kill of all of my coworkers(How I loathe the fools that surround me), so what take from that what you will.

I don't know. I suppose you can check facebook.com to find out. I assume that it's still a US only site, but I'm certain it has international plans in mind for the future...

I know what you mean. I took the SAT seven years ago and did better than half of the people who took it. (I'm nineteen now.)
